This CD brings together three prolific but little-known British composers: Dorothy Howell (1898-1982), Pamela Harrison (1915-90), and Madeleine Dring (1923-77). Working in the same country at the same time, these composers had much in common. All studied at either the Royal Academy or Royal College of Music, and went on to have dual careers as composer-performers. They wrote tonal music in a style that would fall out of fashion in the later twentieth century, which has certainly contributed to their disappearance from concert halls. And above all, they composed with a great sense of humour. The music on this disc sparkles with wit and energy. In the mid-twentieth century the two piano combination was popular both in the concert hall and for light entertainment. It proved a perfect medium for composers who liked to bring a lightness of touch to their work, allowing them to write pieces that were fun both to play and to watch.

Following on from his sumptuous recital of Schumann’s Études symphoniques with William Sterndale Bennett’s great Sonata in F minor, Japanese pianist Hiroaki Takenouchi here confronts a relatively rare chamber score by the Briton, his Sextet with piano, with that of his other great Saxon friend, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy.

Two ambitious, different, cousinly works that quickly reveal, before anything else, the decisive influence of Carl Maria von Weber on these two stars of the…

For several years now, Hiroaki Takenouchi had been keen to champion the music of a major Romantic composer, William Sterndale Bennett – an English virtuoso pianist, born in 1816, and considered one of the most captivating virtuosos in his time because of his flamboyance and mastery of the keyboard. Here, Takenouchi chooses one of what are indisputably Sterndale Bennett’s most accomplished scores, the Piano Sonata in F minor Op. 13, dedicated to Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy: the work unveils a romantic ballad tone, which is both exciting and genuinely exhilarating, like the great scores of Mendelssohn or Schumann. To complete his programme Takenouchi offers one of the latter’s masterpieces for piano, Symphonic Etudes (1834) and dedicated… to William Sterndale Bennett. Indeed, Hiroaki Takenouchi’s new album released on the Artalinna label offers us interplay of reciprocal dedications to these three great names of European Romanticism – Mendelssohn, Schumann and Sterndale Bennett. His first volume of a double anthology dedicated to Haydn had been honoured by an ffff from the French magazine French magazine Télérama (highest award).

Still little known by music lovers, Japanese pianist Hiroaki Takenouchi has a boundless admiration for the works of Joseph Haydn, whose terrific inventiveness he has been analyzing for many years. For this first album on the Artalinna label, he proposes four sonatas that were composed in the early 1770s. They feature a dense, spirited, serene, and joyful Haydn that is consistently uncluttered.

For his third album on Artalinna, the Japanese Hiroaki Takenouchi invites us to rediscover three little-known variation cycles, including Grieg’s sumptuous Ballade, inspired by a popular Norwegian song. With his major Second Improvisation, Medtner creates an immense pantheistic journey, which lasts half an hour. A very rare work, dedicated to the famous French organist Marcel Dupré, whose astonishing Variations in C minor, Op. 22, are presented in response. A truly original tour of Europe!
