The Variations on “Trockne Blumen” from the song cycle Die schone Mullerin are the central work on the album. Schubert on the pan flute; is that possible; is it even allowed?

The Swiss composer Fabian Müller (b. 1964) has repeatedly advocated for extraordinary musical instruments. His new CD is on the one hand about the pan flute, whose tradition goes back to Greek antiquity, on the other hand about the heckelphone, a bass oboe developed by the instrument maker Wilhelm Heckel in 1904. The concerto for panflute and orchestra, composed in 2017, is, like the other works by Fabian Müller, in a moderately modern style, whereby it is obviously important to show the melodic qualities of the instrument, which refer to its frequent use in folk music, as well as its virtuoso possibilities. The Swiss soloist Hanspeter Oggier plays the difficult-to-handle instrument with stupendous security and strong expression, with the Czech orchestra under Kaspar Zehnder providing attentive accompaniment.
