On this year’s Record Story Day (April 22), Foals have a particularly nice release in preparation for their fans: the current album “Life Is Yours” will be released as a dub rework “Life Is Dub”. Responsible for the Reworks is Dan Carey, label boss of Speedy Wunderground and producer (including Wet Leg, Slowthai, Fontaines D.C.). A first greeting from the kitchen is already available in the form of the song “2am” in the new dub version, to be heard below.

“Life Is Yours” and “Wake Me Up,” the opening volley from Foals’ buoyant seventh studio effort, evokes Daft Punk by way of Jungle, harnessing the precision-tuned dance-pop of the former and the dark, R&B-tinged cinematics of the latter. Like its predecessor, 2019’s apocalyptic double-album Everything Not Saved Will Be Loved, Life Is Yours is far removed from the band’s punchy, post-rock past. Their first LP as a trio following the departure of keyboardist Edwin Congreave, the 11-song set delivers a barrage of maximalist pop that ebbs and flows like a long night out. Comprised primarily of party-starters like the disco-tinged “2001,” the desperately horny “2am,” and the Nile Rodgers-leaning “Wake Me Up,” Life Is Yours rarely lets up. Even the cavernous “Crest of the Wave” and the hypnotic, midtempo “Flutter” feel designed to keep arms aloft and glow sticks alight. Over the last few albums, guitarist/vocalist Yannis Philippakis, bassist Jimmy Smith, and drummer Jack Bevan have proven themselves perfectly capable of constructing the sonic architecture to house their dystopian dance-rock. Life Is Yours is the first Foals effort to utilize multiple outside producers (John Hill, Dan Carey, A. K. Paul, and Miles James). Fueled by the long-promised light at the end of the tunnel after the COVID-19 lockdown, it’s also the band’s most vibrant and accessible outing to date.

Foals’ creative ambition for ‘Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost – Part 1’ resulted in a striking state-of-the-world-address of an album in which apocalyptic lyrical themes were equalled by the sheer impact of the music. It emerged as an immediate album of the year contender, with many hailing it as the finest moment in a consistently critically-acclaimed career. That status was cemented when it was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize last week. Now Foals complete that artistic statement with ‘Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost – Part 2’. The album has been launched with the lead track ‘Black Bull’.

Not one album, but two! Foals are back after a four-year break following the release of their acclaimed What Went Down. Yannis Philippakis’s band, whose novelty was starting to fade, is now writing a new chapter. Instead of a lengthy double album, so as not to scare their fans away, the Oxford quartet opted for two albums, one released in the spring, the other in the fall. Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost Part 1 does not have the high intensity of its predecessor, but it is still a piece of powerful rock full of exquisite pieces and crescendos (Exits, White Onions, Syrups) like these stage legends know how to make. Walter Gervers has left the band to pursue new adventures, and Foals chose to soften their style. Philippakis is producing for the first time, and the charismatic leader is having a blast working with new textures full of stage-tailored electro beats (Moonlight, In degress), percussive melodies (Cafe d’Athens – Radiohead’s In Rainbow), and introspective ballads played on the piano (I’m Done With The World (& It’s Done With Me)).
