First recordings of the complete surviving keyboard works by a forgotten figure of the French Baroque.

Brilliant Classics has revived the names of many composers from obscure corners of history. Few of them have been as buried by the past as Pierre-Claude Foucquet, who was active in Paris in the first half of the 18th century. Yet anyone listening to this first complete recording of his music for harpsichord will surely wonder why. Three volumes survive: two books of Pièces de Clavecin, and a third entitled Caractères de la Paix. This was the first to be published in 1749. By then Foucquet had been organist at the magnificent Church of Saint-Eustache for some years, and he would go on to take up the post of titulaire at Notre Dame. He was following in a distinguished family line, his father and grandfather both having been organists at Saint-Eustache.

The Pièces de Clavecin by Pierre-Thomas Dufour (ca. 1721-1786) are a remarkable collection of keyboard music from the Baroque period. Composed in the 18th century, the works bear witness to Dufour’s exceptional talent as a harpsichordist and composer. The collection consists of a number of captivating works, including dances (including court dances) and works with titles such as La Majestueuse, La Triomphante and Les Scithes, which epitomize the elegance and complexity of French Baroque music. Dufour’s Pièces de Clavecin are characterized by their ornate embellishments, graceful melodies and intricate counterpoint. With their delicate phrasing and ornamentation, which lend nuances and expression to the music, they bear witness to the cultivated musical taste of the time. The soloist is Fernando De Luca, one of Italy’s most important harpsichordists, who has released the complete recordings of the piano works by Graupner (BC 96131) and Moyreau (BC 96285) on Brilliant Classics to great acclaim. His recording of the works of Jollage (BC 96773) received 5 stars in the French magazine Diapason.

A world-premiere recording of elegant, courtly French harpsichord suites by a forgotten name of the early 18th century.

The early life and formation of Charles-Alexandre Jollage is shrouded in obscurity. By the time he enters the historical record in the 1720s, he had become organist for the King of Poland, Stanislas Leszcznski, at that time exiled to France and settled at the castle of Chambord in the Loire region of France.

In 1733 Stanislas left Chambord for Warsaw where he claimed the throne of Poland; meanwhile Jollage seems to have settled in Paris, where his only known set of work was published in 1738, and dedicated to the Marquise of Clermont d’Amboise. After that point, it has been established with greater certainty that he remained in Paris as an organist, and died there in 1761.
