In August-September 1965 (February 1967 for Op.55 No.2) Rubinstein, then 79 years old, recorded for RCA these 19 Nocturnes here reissued — following Chopin’s wishes, Rubinstein never performed or recorded the two unpublished nocturnes that fill out many recorded sets. Between effusion and restraint near-ideally balanced, and in a true, fair and alert tone, Arthur Rubinstein stands apart, in addition to his incomparable rubato, by a spontaneity and youth of heart with which he animates these pieces; bathed in light and colors, they are no longer melancholic only.

Artur Rubinstein’s 1956 Beethoven concerto cycle lacks the forethought and stylishness of his ’60s remakes with Leinsdorf. These earlier versions, however, convey more of Rubinstein’s irrepressible stage presence. At times the pianist’s freewheeling spirit in the First and Fifth Concertos causes momentary finger slips, which matter not one whit. Rubinstein’s unruffled demeanor and languorous phrasing in the Third and Fourth Concertos, though, are better suited to Chopin.

In 1960, Russian pianist Sviatoslav Richter performed six recitals for his Carnegie Hall debut. Arthur Rubinstein, after seeing the success of Richter’s performances, decided to commemorate his 75th birthday by performing 10 recitals at Carnegie, not repeating a single composition throughout the series. This collection was taken during those sessions, which many believe to be Rubinstein’s finest live playing.

Arthur Rubinstein had performed Saint-Saens Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 22 many times throughout his concert career; in fact, this was one of the pieces on the program of his first public concert given in 1900. The style in which he plays it is simply captivating. It’s not a serious concerto in the German-school, but rather a light-hearted and somewhat amusing concerto. This is probably the most famous recording of the composition, and it’s no wonder why.

The Symphonic Variations of Cesar Franck are fantastic, full of energy, vitality and French-Romantic beauty.

This is absolutely the best recording of Frederic Chopin’s Piano Concertos! I heard many recordings of these familiar works (for example: Zimmermann, Polish Festival Orchestra, DG), but this recording beats my all old favorites.
1) The recording quality is excellent. Their were made in 1958 and 1961, but still sound is very clear. Unfortunately this isn’t five-channel hybrid recording, there is only three-channel engineering. Music comes only from both middle speakers and front speaker.
2) Rubinstein is brilliant pianist, maybe the greatest of all time! First Concerto sounds very effectively, and peaceful second movement is performed beautifully. Second Concerto is also outstanding, and fast finale is breathtaking!
3) The booklet and SACD are packaged nicely in a strong jewel case.
This is excellent purchase for all classical music lovers! It is very good, that Living Stereo label publishes old masterful recordings on multi-channel SACD! Incredible! ~sa-cd.net
