The collaboration between the Salento record label continues Twelve moons and the saxophonist from Bari Roberto Ottaviano. After “Un Dio Clandestino” (2008), “Arcthetics. Primitive Breath” (2013), “Forgotten Matches. The Worlds of Steve Lacy” (2014), “Astrolabe” (2015), “Eternal Love” (2018) and the two records of the year for Top Jazz (referendum organized by Musica Jazz magazine) “Sidera lis” (2017) and “Resonance & Rhapsodies” (2020), on July 31st “Charlie’s Blue Skylight“. In the new recording project, distributed by distributed in Italy and abroad by IRD and in the best online stores from Believe Digital and produced in programming Puglia Sounds Record 2022 of the Puglia Region (POC Puglia 2007-2013 – Development Action of Cultural Activities and Entertainment), Ottaviano, after the experience in the cd “Forgotten Matches” and various live performances, meets again the English pianist Alexander Hawkins re-reading together eleven compositions by Charles Mingus.
“Mingus the mocking, the bully, the arrogant son of a bitch, the one ahead of everyone, the samurai warrior with his dynasty on one side and the man who never slept with a purse full of psycho sicknesses on the other … i know. For me it has always been another question of love », Roberto Ottaviano writes in the cover notes. “Excessive, unspeakable, able to go from blue silk to ecclesiastical orgies with the snap of a jaguar. This new international chamber-jazz trio with classical and avant leanings features beautiful tunes and tasty improvisation. Canadian clarinetist François Houle, British pianist Alexander Hawkins, and NY-based Canadian drummer Harris Eisenstadt are highly regarded leaders and genuinely sympatico. The program features original compositions by all three plus pieces by Steve Lacy, Andrew Hill and Charles Ives. The group first came together for the 2014 Vancouver jazz festival and played some wild improvisational music but the record is mostly on the more lyrical and contemplative side. Houle and Eisenstadt and Hawkins and Eisenstadt have long histories of performing together, but Alex and François had not met previously. Their performing blend is different from previous Houle projects on Songlines with European pianists Benoît Delbecq and Håvard Wiik – perhaps more classically poised and spacious, but warm rather than cool, and with an edge when needed. Harris’s fastidious, highly textured drumming is the perfect percussive complement. Both Houle and Eisenstadt have extensive back catalogue on Songlines.

When Alexander Hawkins played at the Jazzfest Berlin in a duo with the American trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith, he met the saxophonist Angelika Niescier. Niescier was playing at the festival with her New York Trio with bassist Christopher Tordini and drummer Tyshawn Sorey (“The Berlin Concert”, Intakt CD 305). Niescier has also been honored in Berlin with the Albert Mangelsdorff Prize, Germany’s most prestigious jazz award.

With Togetherness Music, British pianist and composer Alexander Hawkins presents a fascinating musical panorama, a distillation and synthesis of different traditions and influences, reflecting the broad spectrum of an extraordinary musical spirit. Released to celebrate Hawkins’ 40th birthday, this six-movement quasi-orchestral work is an extensive expansion and revision of a piece which originated with a commission from conductor and composer Aaron Holloway-Nahum for the Riot Ensemble, to feature Hawkins and saxophone icon Evan Parker – with whom Hawkins has enjoyed a now more than decade-long musical association – as soloists. The new incarnation of the work features the original forces, augmented by additional acoustic improvisers and the electronic wizardry of Matthew Wright.

Alexander Hawkins is a creative epicentre from the London jazz scene and is regarded in the UK as one of the most innovative musicians of the younger generation with a surprising radius of action. He plays with Evan Parker, Wadada Leo Smith, Taylor Ho Bynum, Louis Moholo, Shabaka Hutchings and Elaine Mitchener. ‘Iron into Wind’ is the name of his new piano solo. The phrase “Iron into Wind” evokes both the transience of improvisation and a fascination with solid material, represented by the powerful blocks of sound to be heard in several of these pieces. Richard Willimas writes in the liner notes: “The mood varies from the two-handed avant-gospel figurations of “Congregational” to the hurtling ” tude” via the austere ruminations of “Tumble Mono”, the knotted blues of “Strange Courage” and the explosive accelerations of “It Should Be a Song”, with a diversion, in “Pleasant Constellation”, by way of variations on an element from Sun Ra’s “Fate in a Pleasant Mood”. What he achieves here is a fine balance of all his interests, creating a self-portrait of a wonderfully inventive modern musician.”

After the album “Togetherness Music”, british pianist and composer Alexander Hawkins presents another musical panorama: An ensemble in which his trio with bassist Neil Charles and drummer Stephen Davis meets saxophonist and clarinetist Shabaka Hutchings, guitarist Otto Fischer, and drummer Richard Olátúndé baker. For anybody who has followed Hawkins’ work since his emergence on the british improvised music scene in the mid 2000’s this is a fresh band full of familiar musicians with whom Hawkins has played in a wide variety of formations. The new pieces that “break a vase” presents emerge from Hawkins’ own imagination, but they also capture the thrust of energy in collaborating with these outstanding musicians.
