A once abandoned Passion project by J. S. Bach? Harpsichordist and conductor Alexander Grychtolik, together with the Il Gardellino Orchestra, embarks on a captivating artistic experiment with this presentation of the Passion Oratorio BWV Anh. 169. The starting point for the partial reconstruction attempt and the completion of the work is the surviving libretto by the poet Picander from 1725. This unique endeavor draws the audience into a profound exploration of human empathy with the poignant suffering of Jesus and sheds light on a passion aesthetic we had not seen previously in Bach’s repertoire.

It’s amazing to think that world première recordings of Bach are possible today at all. The harpsichordist Alexander Grychtolik has painstakingly reconstructed two homage cantatas from Bach’s Leipzig years. The first, Erwählte Pleissenstadt (BWV 216a), survives only in a draft libretto and a few fragments of notation rediscovered in 2003 among the posthumous papers of a Japanese pianist. The second, O angenehme Melodei (BWV 210a), survives only in a soprano part and a separate print of the libretto for the earliest of its three versions. The instrumental accompaniment had to be reconstructed from a later version of the same cantata. Perhaps the longest solo cantata Bach ever wrote, O angenehme Melodei deals with the divine origins of music. Both works were first performed in Leipzig in the 1730s and 1740s.
Alexander Grychtolik has recorded the reconstructed cantatas in Berlin with his ensemble Deutsche Hofmusik and the singers Katja Stuber, Franz Vitzthum and Daniel Johannsen. The result is an impressive world première recording of magnificent music.

Nach über 50 Jahren wird J. S. Bachs „Schäferkantate“, die weltliche Urfassung des Osteroratoriums, durch die Deutsche Hofmusik wieder neu eingespielt. Zusammen mit der Weltersteinspielung der „Krönungskantate“ BWV 205a für August III. von Polen erscheint sie beim Alte-Musik-Label Deutsche Harmonia Mundi (Sony). Die CD-Aufnahme wurde gefördert durch die Funk-Stiftung.
Der Cembalist Alexander Grychtolik hat schon auf früheren Alben bei deutsche harmonia mundi bewiesen, dass er unvollständige Kompositionen in gelungener Weise rekonstruieren kann. Die beiden Alben »Eine angenehme Melodei« mit und die »Köthener Trauermusiken« wurden von der Presse hochgelobt. Das neue Album mit seinem Ensemble Hofmusik präsentiert zwei von ihm rekonstruierte Festmusiken von Johann Sebastian Bach, welche durch einen brillanten Stil und Virtuosität überzeugen: Für die Komposition der Krönungskantate (BWV 205a) griff Bach auf das aus dem Jahr 1725 stammende Dramma per Musica »Der zufriedene Äolos« (BWV 205) zurück und widmete diese Kantate König August III. von Polen. Die Schäferkantate (BWV 249a) rekonstruierte Grychtolik allein auf Basis von verloren geglaubten und wiederentdeckten Rezitativen.
