After returning home, he continued to perform in country clubs. Here he met Chet Atkins, who arranged a recording contract for him with the Capitol label in 1952. His first single, That’s Me Without You, made it into the country top 10, but it was three years before he scored his next hit with For Rent (One Empty Heart). A little later, James made his breakthrough with Ric Cartey’s Young Love. The single was number one in the country charts for nine weeks and reached number two in the pop charts.

Encouraged by this success, Sonny James concentrated on the pop market over the next few years. Although he achieved some respectable successes, such as First Date, First Kiss, First Love, which reached number 39 in 1957, he had hoped for more. His many tours and concert appearances did not improve the situation either. So he finally returned to country music in the mid-1960s. His very first single, You’re the Only World I Know, reached number one in the country charts. It was the beginning of a long series of 23 number one hits that lasted until 1972. Starting with I’ll Never Find Another You, he had sixteen consecutive top hits from 1967 onwards. His success was mainly due to the popularity of the Nashville sound, which Sonny James embodied like no other. His songs were massively enriched with orchestral instrumentation and background choirs. Added to this were his clear and pleasant voice and romantic lyrics.
