Doris Day (* April 3 1922 as Doris Mary Anne Kappelhoff in Cincinnati, Ohio; † May 13, 2019 in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California) was an American film actress and singer.
At first, Day successfully performed as a singer of various big bands. From 1947 she was under contract with the Warner Brothers film studio, where she could be seen mainly in musicals. After that, it was mainly romantic and family-friendly comedies, especially with her film partner Rock Hudson, that significantly shaped her image as a “clean woman” and with whom she was one of the most popular and commercially successful Hollywood stars in the 1950s and 1960s. After the end of her film career, Doris Day became increasingly involved in animal welfare, for which she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004.

Brisbane-based Caligula’s Horse has grown into one of the premiere progressive metal bands in the world since their inception in 2011. Combining raw rock power with immense emotional depth, the group returns with their 6th studio album, Charcoal Grace. Charcoal Grace is borne of the static hopelessness that the pandemic forced upon the band and, indeed, much of the world, these past few years. It is an album reckoning with the experiences and outcomes of this time geared, ultimately, towards catharsis – moving towards a more hopeful future. The title Charcoal Grace is described by the band as “the grim allure and strange beauty in stillness, silence, and loss”. This can be heard through the album’s 10-minute opening track “The World Breathes With Me,” a mission statement for the album’s main themes. Musically, it’s a work of contrasts, moving from the lightest ebb to the heaviest flow. Meanwhile, the second track and first single from the album, “Golem,” examines struggling with the weight of expectation through the pandemic. It’s a heavy song with an emphasis on riffs and driving rhythms. At the center of the album is the 4-part title track suite, a 24-minute opus that pushes deeper into the album’s foundational themes: connection, alienation, and the ways humanity acts under duress. Musically, it covers every facet of the band’s vocabulary, from heavy and dense orchestral-accompanied intensity embodying the song’s darkest lyrical ideas, through to soft acoustic-driven moments and introspection. Having spent the last few years unable to fully represent their last album Rise Radiant to the world, Caligula’s Horse is now ready to take Charcoal Grace to the masses in relentless fashion. Bon Jovi have been part of the rock landscape for so long, it’s hard to remember a time when they weren’t yet world-beaters. But on January 21, 1984, they were just getting started, releasing their first, self-titled album on the Mercury label.
Bon Jovi was produced by Lance Quinn and Tony Bongiovi, who was not only the cousin of Jon Bon Jovi, but founded the Power Station studio in New York, where the album was recorded. It was a showcase for a hungry young five-piece in a hurry to go places. The material was almost entirely co-written by Bon Jovi himself with various collaborators, including lead guitarist Richie Sambora (newly installed in the band as the replacement for Dave Sabo, who went on to Skid Row) on four numbers.
The exception, and the only time that the band have ever recorded anything by an “outsider” on a studio record, was “She Don’t Know Me,” by Mark Avsec. He was a member of Donnie Iris and the Cruisers, themselves a chart act in America in the first half of the 1980s, notably with fine singles like “Ah! Leah!” and “My Girl.”
The Bon Jovi album also featured contributions from such notables as unofficial band bassist Hugh McDonald, Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band drummer Roy Bittan, and Canadian guitarist Aldo Nova, who had scored a Top 30 US hit of his own in 1982 with “Fantasy.”
Now, UMG releases a brand new Deluxe Edition for the album’s 40th anniversary, featuring 9 tracks bonus material including alternate mixes and live versions!

A striking musical rapport between Norwegian trumpeter Arve Henriksen and Dutch pianist Harmen Fraanje is palpable in the duo’s quietly lyrical investigations on Touch of Time. These are delicate melodies and textures, flowing between two musicians, who care deeply for the nuances of tone-shadings and the detailed development of a musical idea. In both freely improvised forms and carefully wrought themes, their instruments connect gracefully, picking up and finishing each other’s phrases. Touch of Time, recorded in January 2023 at the Auditorio Stelio Molo in Lugano, was produced by Manfred Eicher.

In 1700, Corelli published his 12 violin sonatas, op. 5, in Rome. They are a true revolution in violin technique, which attracted the admiration of important composers (Bach, Dandrieu, Couperin) and strongly influenced the French (Francœur, Leclair, Senaillé, Quentin), who were also to try their hand at this virtuoso and brilliant Italian style. At the end of the 1730s, the first six sonatas of Opus 5 were “adapted to the transverse flute with bass” by a Parisian publisher. The degree of virtuosity they demanded was quite innovative for the time. This virtuosity can also be found in the compositions of Jean-Baptiste Quentin, known as Le Jeune. Little biographical information is available about Quentin himself, but his entire oeuvre is inspired by Italian music and strongly influenced by Corelli. Anna Besson has produced the world’s first recording of his sonatas, supported by two other outstanding performers of the new Baroque generation, Myriam Rignol on the viola da gamba and Jean Rondeau on the harpsichord ..

Amazingly, 26 years and 10 albums in, Alkaline Trio still has enough punk puns in their back pocket to kick off an album with “Hot for Preacher.” Of course, anything less would be disappointing, and this is not a band who made their bones by failing to deliver what fans expect. That sense of familiarity makes Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs an easy-to-grok record but also makes it something of a predictable one. The gang choruses, energetic pop-punk harmonies, and stop-start dynamics are all here, and, more notably, the core lineup of Matt Skiba and Dan Andriano is still intact, more than a quarter-century after the band’s debut. (Longtime drummer Derek Grant departed soon after Blood’s recording.) While it’s clear on soaring, dynamic cuts like “Shake With Me” and “Scars” that the band is still quite capable of crafting smart, anthemic punk rock, other tracks—the straightforward rocker “Broken Down in a Time Machine” or the meandering midtempo “Versions of You”—show that the band is content to let a kernel of an idea substitute for a fully thought-out composition. Punk rock being punk rock, this is far from a cardinal sin, and Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs is a remarkably strong album that manages to balance the band’s status as elder eminences with the inherent limitations of the form. Album closer “Teenage Heart” could have been a dull bit of nostalgia—or worse, a weak-sauce attempt to connect with “the kids”—but instead it finds the band reflective on the sad state of affairs in the country. A chorus like “All I want for Christmas is an AR-15/ My stocking stuffed with fentanyl” would have been gimmicky and trite in lesser hands, but Alkaline Trio are wearied, wizened warriors who refuse to give up the fight. – Jason Ferguson

This connection is so obvious that it has long been longed for by many. For more than a decade, to be precise. Adam Bałdych remembers the first time they met: “Leszek invited me to a joint concert at the opera house in Wrocław. Since then, we have met again and again to improvise together, but even more so to talk. It was clear from the start that we would harmonize musically. The redoubtable South African pianist and composer Abdullah Ibrahim—formerly known as Dollar Brand—was born in 1934. But well into the 21st century, Ibrahim is still going strong as is evidenced by 3, where he is joined by Cleave Guyton on flute, piccolo, and clarinet, and Noah Jackson on bass and cello. The sprawling release features six studio cuts and more than a dozen live tracks recorded at a 2023 concert at London’s Barbican Centre. The trio plays a kind of chamber music that deftly blends jazz, classical, and South African music.
