It was around 1825 that Louise Bertin, pupil of Reicha and friend of Berlioz, tackled the subject of Faust with all the energy and confidence of a young woman of twenty. She entirely exceeded the public’s expectations and won over the critics with her daring. Colourful orchestration, charming cantabiles, vigorous choruses – everything seemed to promise the work would enter the repertory. But the closure of the Theatre-Italien after just three performances in 1831 decided otherwise, and the score languished in the vaults of the Bibliotheque Nationale de France for 190 years. The leading role, conceived for the mezzo-soprano Rosmunda Pisaroni, was finally created by the tenor Domenico Donzelli. In this complete recording with period instruments, Christophe Rousset presents the work in its original form, which has never been heard before, even in the composer’s lifetime. Once again, Les Talens Lyriques and the Palazzetto Bru Zane join forces in an adventurous French operatic rediscovery.

“A new album of Rameau from Finnish accordionist Janne Valkeajoki presents a harmonious fusion of baroque brilliance and modern innovation. Renowned for his unparalleled contributions to Baroque opera, Jean-Philippe Rameau stands as one of the era’s most important composers, and the brilliance of his compositions is now reimagined through a more modern lens. Through a unique and innovative approach, Rameau’s meticulously crafted movements find new life with the accordion—an instrument that adds a fresh, vibrant layer to the music, bringing Rameau’s innovative spirit into the contemporary realm and highlighting the accordion’s versatility as both a singing and an orchestral instrument. This new album comprises two suites, each movement creating a unique atmosphere of its own. In an era where full suites are less commonly heard than individual movements, the album offers a rare opportunity to experience Rameau’s work in its entirety, as he originally intended.”

Initially envisioned as a theme for a TV series, Yves Levêque metamorphoses Ariana, Concerto in C minor into a three-movement magnum opus, amalgamating potent piano artistry with symphonic orchestration in a tapestry of emotion and virtuosity. In parallel, César Franck’s Prelude, Choral, and Fugue, FWV21, offers a pianistic fresco of classical rigor, imbued with influences ranging from Bach to Liszt, where lyrical resonance marries intricate polyphony. Two compositions, one ambition: to touch the soul through musical grandeur.

“Everything seems to start almost normally on Pussyhorse with “Creep in the Cellar,” even with the rather gone violin line – Haynes is intelligible, the piano part is quiet serene. Then again, Haynes is talking about the creep in question doing things like taking off his skin, so clearly all is still at least somewhat tweaked in Surferland. The rest of the album makes that pretty clear; if not quite as strong as Psychic…Powerless, Pussyhorse is still a strong slice of homegrown art/psychedelia gone to a murky hell. Gentler songs like “Sea Ferring” still have a distinct queasiness to them, its sea chanty feeling undercut by the nagging bassline and Haynes’ yelps.

The Hungarian Dances (German: Ungarische Tänze) by Johannes Brahms (WoO 1), are a set of 21 lively dance tunes based mostly on Hungarian themes, completed in 1879. They vary from about a minute to five minutes in length. They are among Brahms’s most popular works and were the most profitable for him. Each dance has been arranged for a wide variety of instruments and ensembles. Brahms originally wrote the version for piano four hands (piano duet: two players using one piano) and later arranged the first ten dances for solo piano.

An album of arrangements for harp made by the artist herself of some dearly loved and familiar works.
Richard Strauss: Morgen
“Richard Strauss is one of my absolute favorite composers. Whether it is his opera Rosenkavalier or his Vier Letzte Lieder, they are all masterpieces that move. So is the song “Morgen”, which in all its simplicity immediately finds a straight line to everyone’s heart. I hope that even without the sung words, the essence and beauty of this work are conveyed in this version for harp solo.”
Erich Korngold: Tanzlied des Pierrot
“Through my work at the Wiener Staatsoper, I played many wonderful operas. One of the most beautiful ones is “Tote Stadt” in which Korngold makes eager use of the harp. Tanzlied des Pierrot is an enchanting intimate excerpt of this opera.”
Franz Schubert: Ständchen
“When it comes to Schubert’s famous Ständchen, Vienna is not far away and may not need much further explanation. This is one of the last songs the Austrian composer composed, and it remains beautiful, with or without words.”
W.A. Mozart: Fantasia
“Mozart only did find his way to the harp via the double concerto for flute and harp. At that time, the chromatic possibilities of the harp were not as developed and therefore less interesting. Thanks to the modern double pedal system, it is a wonderful challenge to transpose this Fantasy for piano on harp, among others, and to place it in a new light.”
