Frank Carter’s breakthrough came as the energetic frontman of the nihilistic hardcore punk band Gallows. He left the band in 2011 to pursue a much more positive approach with his next project, Pure Love. This was also reflected in the sound of their only album “Anthems”, which had clear influences from classic rock and power pop.

The Brit founded Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes together with guitarist Dean Richardson in 2015 to find the perfect middle ground between these two approaches. The energy and directness of hardcore on the one hand, melody and emotion on the other.

With their fifth album “Dark Rainbow”, the band succeeds in this endeavor amazingly perfectly. The songs convince with audibly mature songwriting and even more personal lyrics than before. Musically, Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes now allow whatever they like. The framework is still timeless punk rock. In order to cover the necessary spectrum of emotions and energies, however, strings, piano or synthesizers are sometimes used.

This courage for variety suits “Dark Rainbow” perfectly. The album’s sound, which spans epochs and genres, is sometimes even reminiscent of the desert rock of Queens Of The Stone Age.

Orizzonti perduti is Franco Battiato’s thirteenth studio album, released in December 1983 on the Italian EMI label. The album, which the author took particular care during the recording phase, reached seventh place in the charts and was the thirty-second best-selling of 1984. The album, unlike the previous ones, presents a greater use of electronics and computers for the reproduction of sounds, with the total elimination of acoustic instruments. The album is in some ways autobiographical: it is no coincidence, in fact, that the main narrative scenario is the Sicilian environment. Themes such as musical satire and the cultural decadence of the West are then touched upon.

Come Un Cammello In Una Grondaia is Franco Battiato’s sixteenth album, released in 1991.

The album is divided into two parts: the first four songs are works by Battiato while the remaining four are lieder by classical music authors.

It reached tenth place in the charts and sold over 250,000 copies, making it the thirty-fourth best-selling album in Italy during the year.

On the cover there is a detail from a painting by Süphan Barzani, the pseudonym with which Battiato initially signed his paintings.

The title of the album is a quote from Al-Biruni, a Persian scientist who lived in the 11th century, who used to pronounce this phrase to indicate the inadequacy of his language in describing scientific topics.

Schmerzen is one of the five Lieder of the Wesendonck-Lieder cycle (WWV 91), composed by Richard Wagner in 1857 on a poem by Mathilde Wesendonck.

The song Plaisir d’amour (1785) by Johann Paul Aegidius Martin was proposed to Sibilla for the 1984 single Plaisir d’amour/Sex appeal to Europe, the latter composed, like the other songs performed by the singer, by Battiato-Pio . The piece is also cited by Battiato in the song Shakleton (Gommalacca, 1998).

Gestillte Sehnsucht is taken from the Op. 91 Two cantos for contralto, viola and piano (1863-1884) by Johannes Brahms.

Oh Sweet Were the Hours is taken from the Op. 108 Twenty-Five Scottish Songs (1818) by Ludwig Van Beethoven; the English text is attributed to William Smyth (1765-1849). The piece is part of Beethoven’s project to re-arrange songs from British folk heritage.

Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington (April 29, 1899 – May 24, 1974) was an American jazz pianist, composer, and leader of his eponymous jazz orchestra from 1923 through the rest of his life.

Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Ellington was based in New York City from the mid-1920s and gained a national profile through his orchestra’s appearances at the Cotton Club in Harlem. A master at writing miniatures for the three-minute 78 rpm recording format, Ellington wrote or collaborated on more than one thousand compositions; his extensive body of work is the largest recorded personal jazz legacy, and many of his pieces have become standards. He also recorded songs written by his bandsmen, such as Juan Tizol’s “Caravan”, which brought a Spanish tinge to big band jazz.

Doris Day (* April 3 1922 as Doris Mary Anne Kappelhoff in Cincinnati, Ohio; † May 13, 2019 in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California) was an American film actress and singer.

At first, Day successfully performed as a singer of various big bands. From 1947 she was under contract with the Warner Brothers film studio, where she could be seen mainly in musicals. After that, it was mainly romantic and family-friendly comedies, especially with her film partner Rock Hudson, that significantly shaped her image as a “clean woman” and with whom she was one of the most popular and commercially successful Hollywood stars in the 1950s and 1960s. After the end of her film career, Doris Day became increasingly involved in animal welfare, for which she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004.

Los Angeles quartet DEAD POET SOCIETY are pleased to announce their second album FISSION. It arrives on January 26. Pre-order it here.

After a decade defining, redefining, and perfecting their art, Fission finds Dead Poet Society poised to be rock’s next breakout act. The album is a 13-track study of personal change and the turbulence of growth that, as frontman Jack Underkofler attests, takes “a microscopic and broad look at the events that changed who we are.”

Today, the band has dropped two singles — “I hope you hate me.” and “How Could I Love You?”

Both songs address the sometimes bittersweet, more often simply bitter, fallout from a tumultuous relationship. The latter is an excruciating yet intoxicating journey, backed by searing guitars, while the former addresses the aftermath of a relationship.

The video for “I hope you hate me” features dancer and breakout social media star This Robot Cannot Human, whose carefully choreographed moves perfectly reflect the song’s tension and slow, calculated build up. The track effortlessly mixes a subtle take on ’80s nu wave with alt rock fury, thanks to pulsating riffs and drumbeats that echo your own heartbeat.

Brisbane-based Caligula’s Horse has grown into one of the premiere progressive metal bands in the world since their inception in 2011. Combining raw rock power with immense emotional depth, the group returns with their 6th studio album, Charcoal Grace. Charcoal Grace is borne of the static hopelessness that the pandemic forced upon the band and, indeed, much of the world, these past few years. It is an album reckoning with the experiences and outcomes of this time geared, ultimately, towards catharsis – moving towards a more hopeful future. The title Charcoal Grace is described by the band as “the grim allure and strange beauty in stillness, silence, and loss”. This can be heard through the album’s 10-minute opening track “The World Breathes With Me,” a mission statement for the album’s main themes. Musically, it’s a work of contrasts, moving from the lightest ebb to the heaviest flow. Meanwhile, the second track and first single from the album, “Golem,” examines struggling with the weight of expectation through the pandemic. It’s a heavy song with an emphasis on riffs and driving rhythms. At the center of the album is the 4-part title track suite, a 24-minute opus that pushes deeper into the album’s foundational themes: connection, alienation, and the ways humanity acts under duress. Musically, it covers every facet of the band’s vocabulary, from heavy and dense orchestral-accompanied intensity embodying the song’s darkest lyrical ideas, through to soft acoustic-driven moments and introspection. Having spent the last few years unable to fully represent their last album Rise Radiant to the world, Caligula’s Horse is now ready to take Charcoal Grace to the masses in relentless fashion. With this album, Caligula’s Horse has made a statement, and they’re ready for the world to listen.

Bon Jovi have been part of the rock landscape for so long, it’s hard to remember a time when they weren’t yet world-beaters. But on January 21, 1984, they were just getting started, releasing their first, self-titled album on the Mercury label.

Bon Jovi was produced by Lance Quinn and Tony Bongiovi, who was not only the cousin of Jon Bon Jovi, but founded the Power Station studio in New York, where the album was recorded. It was a showcase for a hungry young five-piece in a hurry to go places. The material was almost entirely co-written by Bon Jovi himself with various collaborators, including lead guitarist Richie Sambora (newly installed in the band as the replacement for Dave Sabo, who went on to Skid Row) on four numbers.

The exception, and the only time that the band have ever recorded anything by an “outsider” on a studio record, was “She Don’t Know Me,” by Mark Avsec. He was a member of Donnie Iris and the Cruisers, themselves a chart act in America in the first half of the 1980s, notably with fine singles like “Ah! Leah!” and “My Girl.”

The Bon Jovi album also featured contributions from such notables as unofficial band bassist Hugh McDonald, Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band drummer Roy Bittan, and Canadian guitarist Aldo Nova, who had scored a Top 30 US hit of his own in 1982 with “Fantasy.”

Now, UMG releases a brand new Deluxe Edition for the album’s 40th anniversary, featuring 9 tracks bonus material including alternate mixes and live versions!

A striking musical rapport between Norwegian trumpeter Arve Henriksen and Dutch pianist Harmen Fraanje is palpable in the duo’s quietly lyrical investigations on Touch of Time. These are delicate melodies and textures, flowing between two musicians, who care deeply for the nuances of tone-shadings and the detailed development of a musical idea. In both freely improvised forms and carefully wrought themes, their instruments connect gracefully, picking up and finishing each other’s phrases. Touch of Time, recorded in January 2023 at the Auditorio Stelio Molo in Lugano, was produced by Manfred Eicher.

In 1700, Corelli published his 12 violin sonatas, op. 5, in Rome. They are a true revolution in violin technique, which attracted the admiration of important composers (Bach, Dandrieu, Couperin) and strongly influenced the French (Francœur, Leclair, Senaillé, Quentin), who were also to try their hand at this virtuoso and brilliant Italian style. At the end of the 1730s, the first six sonatas of Opus 5 were “adapted to the transverse flute with bass” by a Parisian publisher. The degree of virtuosity they demanded was quite innovative for the time. This virtuosity can also be found in the compositions of Jean-Baptiste Quentin, known as Le Jeune. Little biographical information is available about Quentin himself, but his entire oeuvre is inspired by Italian music and strongly influenced by Corelli. Anna Besson has produced the world’s first recording of his sonatas, supported by two other outstanding performers of the new Baroque generation, Myriam Rignol on the viola da gamba and Jean Rondeau on the harpsichord ..
