John Cage (1912-1992) holds his own special place amidst this stylistic pluralism. Although Cage did not specifically write a trio for horn, violin, and piano, his work Music For (1984) can be easily fleshed out in this instrumental lineup. Music For is a bundle of 17 parts that can be randomly associated with one another. Each possible combination represents an entirely valid version of the piece – ranging from a solo performance to piano duet, string quartet, or ensemble with voice. The version for horn trio is called Music For Three, and this version also allows for several performance alternatives.

Bach is rightly considered as one of the undiscussed champions of German music; not only because he is one of the greatest composers (if not the greatest) who ever lived in today’s Germany, but also because he displays some traits which are typical for the German Baroque. Among them, an interest for intricate polyphony which was already disappearing in the coeval music of other countries. This vinyl LP came out in 1973. But the songs are actually from The British movie soundtrack, All The Right Noises 1971. Starring Tom Bell and Olivia Hussey. One of only two 70’s albums by Melanie never to be released on CD. They planned to release in in Nov. 2016, then Dec, and then Jan. 2017. And Amazon decided not to release it on CD at all. Perhaps sales weren’t as big as expected. But they let a lot of people down. Because this album is beautiful and haunting, like the movie soundtrack. If you can’t find this on CD. You can order a used import vinyl copy of the soundtrack, because they are essentially the same. This will be the best music you never heard of, when you purchase it. On this unique and originally programmed journey, the violist Massimo Piva takes the kind of fantasy journey (Fantasiereise) that forms one of the cornerstones of German Romanticism. It is in the context of highly wrought, fantastic tales that Schumann’s style is formed from a literary point of view: Hoffmann’s short stories and Jean Paul’s novels, inhabited by bizarre characters and surreal situations, are his polar stars. On the musical side, he had an 18th-century heritage of fantasies by composers such as Mozart or C.P.E. Bach to draw upon, in which the notion of the fantasy is still linked to the Baroque idea of improvisation.

This nine song romp held an upbeat tempo throughout, with glorious changes; most were subtle and flowed seamlessly. Others were sizable bursts or drop downs, as they were intended to be. The quintet beautifully honored each song. They played in service to the music, with no showboating or competitive nonsense. They all have extensive jazz vocabularies, which led to rich conversation and improvisation. Somehow Sheppard continues to fly under the radar, but no doubt he is one of the world’s finest jazz saxophonists. Playing both tenor and soprano on this night, he once again shone in solos and made everyone else sound better. Not everyone can do that, but Sheppard always does. Jenkins is cut from the same cloth. Their exchanges were exquisite, complementing each other as opposed to pushing each other. Cunliffe manages to have quiet but strong impressionism. He plays in a trio quite often so, naturally, and most wonderfully, he brings that mindset. This brings two important elements to the ensemble. When the horn section steps out and they play in trio, Cunliffe is, obviously, way into his element. When in quintet, and it is Cunliffe’s moment to shine, he pounces on it like a hungry bear. The best of both worlds.
