1973 Landmark Set a Profoundly Influential Record on Country, Folk, and Rock Genres. Influential doesn’t begin to capture the scope, legacy, and brilliance of Gram Parsons’ GP. By wedding traditional country threads with folk, soul, and rock fabrics, the singer/guitarist unconsciously gave birth to a new subgenre that would later evolve into what we now know as country-rock and Americana. Thematically, Parsons proves beyond his then 25-year-old age and addresses heartbreak, yearning, dreams, and wistful feelings with the lived-in conviction of someone many years his senior.

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Omnivore Recordings

Packaging contains photos, liner notes & remembrances from members of Wilco and Guided By Voices Throughout the 1980s, the California based Game Theory was ONE OF THE MOST original (and critically acclaimed) indie-rock bands. Their blend of ’60s and ’70s pop influences such as Todd Rundgren and Big Star coupled with a post-punk energy led to a string of diverse albums nearly all produced by Mitch Easter of Let’s Active. For the past several years, Omnivore has painstakingly reissued each and every one of their original albums with the addition of a slew of unreleased bonus tracks. Their final album, 1988’s Two Steps From The Middle Ages was reissued in June 2017. That appeared to be the final chapter of their story, or was it? Hardcore Game Theory fans still talk about the band’s final line-up that toured the West Coast, but never released an album. Circa 1989–90, the band was rejuvenated with leader Scott Miller being joined by the legendary Michael Quercio from The Three O’Clock (who had recently broken up). Other interesting line-up changes included longtime Game Theory drummer Gil Ray moving over to guitar and keyboards, while Scott Miller’s former Alternate Learning bandmate (the original template of Game Theory) Jozef Becker, formerly of True West and Thin White Rope, joined as the drummer. Jozef is the brother of Game Theory’s original keyboardist, Nan Becker. Across The Barrier Of Sound: PostScript is the album that might have been at the time. There’s a blend of home and studio and live recordings. Songs that many fans haven’t heard unless they were lucky enough to catch a live show at the time and some songs which reappeared in significantly different form on the debut album from Scott Miller and Jozef Becker’s post-Game Theory band The Loud Family, Plants And Birds And Rocks And Things. Miller uniquely blended classic pop songwriting with groundbreaking art-rock influences, which is reflected in home recordings of Brian Eno’s “Needle In The Camel’s Eye” and The Nazz’s “Forget All About It”. There’s a feast of Scott Miller penned delights on the 14-song vinyl LP, and the CD includes an additional 10 unissued bonus tracks with Game Theory originals and songs originally recorded by artists such as Big Star and The Three O’Clock. Journey Across The Barrier Of Sound and enjoy this PostScript to a great band’s career, but also as a wonderful album in its own right.

You can’t miss Ed O’Brien – he’s the tall fella always stood on the left in Radiohead. He’s the bedrock of the band’s stage presence, and on record holds the centre of their sound with his artful rhythm guitar, synth atmospherics and soulful vocals. Away from their day jobs, the spotlight tends to land his fellow band members: Thom Yorke’s lauded dance music and Jonny Greenwood’s stellar movie scores. “The last thing the world needs is a shit album by me,” O’Brien has confessed.

The levels of fresh energy in these celebration sessions will blow doors and socks off all who hear them, and the potency of timeless riffage such as “It’s Electric” and “The Prince” literally scream at the listener. Anderson also produced and mixed the album with a freshness and attack which will thrill fans old and new. As if that wasn’t enough, Diamond Head add four covers to the album, Judas Priest’s “Sinner”, Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song”, Deep Purple’s “Rat Bat Blue” and a stunning take of Metallica’s “No Remorse”, which is a tribute’s tribute to the band who openly formed under enormous influence from Diamond Head, and covered several of the songs on Lightning To The Nations, decades ago. Cup – Spinning Creature (2019)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 41:04 minutes | 780 MB | Genre: Alternative, Indie
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Northern Spy Records

CUP is the duo of Nels Cline (the guitarist/composer best known for his work with Wilco) and Yuka C Honda (the composer/keyboardist/programmer best known for her work with Cibo Matto). Combining aspects of electronica, folk, improvisation, and some heated rocking, this debut recording perhaps predictably defies easy categorization. But fear not! Contained within this package is a sometimes sweet, sometimes jarring, but always compelling excursion into what a shared sensibility sounds like, and after taking the journey that is ‘Spinning Creature’ it all feels just right as CUP’s music veers from the accessible to the abstract and back.

‘Spinning Creature’ was recorded in about three days in Brooklyn. In the last several years, Nels and Yuka had performed some of the songs included on this record, while always leaving room for improvisation in their sets as well. This recording was approached with those same parameters. Thus, one hears songs with lyrics and some semblance of song structure as well as pieces that were created spontaneously. A significant bonus factor in the recording process is that Yuka could take tracks to her home studio and give them the “Eucademix” treatment, meaning to sculpt details of the tracks, adding her often meticulous sound production while still honoring the live performance aspects. This balance is what CUP music is all about. Nels and Yuka (who are married, by the way) even sing a little here and there as they enter their singular sound world. And now you can enter it, too!

Christ Church Cathedral Choir, Kirsty Hopkins & Mark Dobell – Howard Goodall: Invictus. A Passion (2018)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 57:59 minutes | 1,04 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © CORO Connections

Persecution of the innocent, malevolent authority exerting itself against ideas that threaten and challenge, the power of a peaceful, loving humility in the face of tyranny, the facing-down of fear. Such is the power of the Passion story and so it appears in Howard Goodall’s new work, Invictus: A Passion. Forty-five years of writing musical theatre (as well as some more hilarious scores for Mr. Bean and for Blackadder!) has inevitably shaped the way he sets narrative texts, carefuly avoiding the abstract, opaque or overly elusive. Likewise he makes no apology for his musical idiom being very, very approachable. Goodall has found a route directly to people’s hearts, telling the story afresh through his choice of texts – not the Gospels but poems by various female authors: Gethsemane by Ella Wheeler Wilcox, Mary Magdalene and the Other Mary by Christina Georgina Rossetti and Slave Auction by Ellen Watkins Harper, interwoven with the 1611 verse narrative of the biblical Passion by Æmelia Lanyer née Bassano, one of the first books published in the English language by a female poet. The world premiere recording of this brand new choral work is performed by the Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, with the Lanyer Ensemble and soloists from The Sixteen, conducted by Stephen Darlington, the very same team that gave the European premiere in May 2018.

For Executive Meeting begins with an elegy for the radical, tragic Pop Art titan Barney Bubbles and ends with a revved-up cover of Rosanne Cash’s peerless “Seven Year Ache.” Throughout the ten songs in-between, Elizabeth Nelson weaves together stories about figures like Steve Cropper, P.G. Wodehouse, and Doug Yule, laments the loss of David Berman and Adam Schlesinger, and duets with Patterson Hood from the Drive-By Truckers on an infectious tribute to John Prine.

Loaded with vivid detail and memorable riffs, it proves what in-the-know critics have been saying for years: Elizabeth Nelson is one of our best songwriters.

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © LOOSE

Vetiver is the long-running stage and recording name of San Francisco’s Andy Cabic. ‘Up On High’ is his seventh studio album and the first since 2015. Vetiver has toured around the world on headline tours and supporting artists that include Wilco, The Shins, Fleet Foxes, Beach House, Bob Weir & Phil Lesh, and Vashti Bunyan. Vetiver craft nuanced, understated songs that reward careful listening, building a rich duality; a space where sunshine is only a chord away from melancholy, an introspective lyric underlies an extroverted chorus and subtlety tries to be outgoing in an effort to connect the dots of life’s ellipsis. ‘Up On High’ was recorded with longtime collaborator Thom Monahan (Neko Case, Bedouine, Fruit Bats, The Donkeys, Peter Bjorn and John, Beachwood Sparks, Little Joy). Instrumentation comes from an all-world cast that includes Eric Johnson (Fruit Bats, EDJ), Gabriel Noel (Kendrick Lamar, Father John Misty, Tyler the Creator), Dan Iead (Kevin Morby, Cass McCombs), Josh Adams (Bedouine, Wild Nothing), and Tim Ramsey (Fruit Bats, Little Wings).
