The Man with the Horn is an album released by Miles Davis in 1981, featuring drummer Al Foster, saxophonist Bill Evans, guitarists Mike Stern and Barry Finnerty, and others. It was Davis’s first new release since 1975, following a six-year reclusive retirement. Rock-oriented in nature, the music fuses 1980s pop with improvisational funk and fusion styles. The album marked Davis’s return to his more traditional trumpet playing, although the title song “The Man with the Horn” features wah-wah improvisation along with vocals.

“Who Do You Love The Most?” is the young trio’s third album in just over four years, and continues in the tradition of their two previous efforts; beautiful and evocative melodies, rich on harmonies, often rhythmically complex textures and a typically folk-like Scandinavian character with the occasional gospel feel. The album’s 10 songs are all Mulelid originals, except for a gripping cover of Judee Sill’s The Archetypical Man. Two of the originals are the trio’s versions of songs that first appeared on the pianist’s much lauded solo piano album (“Piano”) from last year. Kjetil André Mulelid (31) comes across as an exceptionally mature pianist and composer. The trio’s 2017 debut “Not Nearly Enough To Buy A House” received wide international acclaim, with writers most typically mentioning Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans. The praise continued for 2019’s follow-up “What You Thought Was Home”, with the Jazz Journal giving it a 5/5 rating and calling it “some of the most captivating music I´ve heard in quite some while”. All About Jazz noted the maturity of the work, feeling like coming from three well-seasoned pros.

It is not new that jazz people sometimes make a foray into chamber music. Solo piano plus string quartet doesn’t really happen that often. What is the appeal of this connection? Let’s look at it this way: When the saxophonist or trumpeter plays their solo in a jazz quartet, the piano gives them a safe, inspiring sound chamber in which they can develop freely. And what does the pianist do if he wants to play in such a sound chamber? The best thing he can do is go on a journey with a string quartet. But, correctly, in this case it is the pianist who went on the journey. Roman Babik traveled to Warsaw with his Bully and was in the studio there for two days with the Atom String Quartet. The result is finally available in this great and very special album.

A renowned poet has a new album out Friday titled “The Gospel According To Nikki Giovanni.” In addition to publishing dozens of poetry works, Nikki Giovanni has recorded several spoken word albums over the course of 50 years. But this time, she’s doing something a little different. The new album, a collaboration with saxophonist Javon Jackson, is a collection of gospel hymns and spirituals set to jazz. Growing up in the Baptist church, Giovanni says gospel music was instrumental to understanding herself as a poet. “The spirituals had a message,” she says. “They weren’t just some people woke up one morning or came from working in the evening and said, ‘Oh, let’s sit down and sing.’ They were sharing information with each other.”

Japanese Jazz legend Tsuyoshi Yamamoto’s new album, A Shade Of Blue, undoubtedly reflects his love of the piano trio, a group configuration that in jazz history began in the 1940s with Nat King Cole and then was developed in the 50s by innovators like Oscar Peterson, Ahmad Jamal, and Bill Evans. Yamamoto’s highly experienced trio – which has a combined age of 215 years – features bassist Hiroshi Kagawa and drummer Toshio Osumi. A Shade Of Blue reveals the three musicians’ incredible musical chemistry; listening to the ten tracks they’ve recorded together, it’s as if they breathe, think, and feel as one person; such is the musical empathy between them.

The Jacky Terrason Jazz Trio – Lover Man (2009) [Japan 2016] SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

Jacky Terrasson finds new routes into familiar compositions on these 1993 sessions for the Japanese Venus label. Well accompanied by bassist Ugonna Okegwo and drummer Leon Parker, the pianist dives head first into a rousing, if unusual version of Charlie Parker’s “Donna Lee,” initially kicking off an explosive vamp to play against its theme, though he eventually discards the vamp in favor of a more conventional, though thoroughly post-bop approach to this bop classic. Likewise, Terrasson introduces Miles Davis with a good bit of drama, even if he is more direct in his improvised introduction than Bill Evans was in his final years. The pianist’s arrangement of Dave Brubeck’s “In Your Own Sweet Way” is particularly haunting, with his surprising chords in the bassline, then eases up a bit as he gets into a funky mood. Terrasson has just as much fun with standards like “Broadway” and “Love for Sale,” while also proving himself as a promising composer with two strong originals.

Groovin’ Hard is a collection of previously unreleased live recordings of the legendary jazz trio, The Three Sounds, led by groove-master pianist Gene Harris. Captured live at Seattle’s Penthouse jazz club from 1964-1968, featuring longtime Three Sounds bassist Andy Simpkins and drummers Bill Dowdy, Kalil Madi and Carl Burnett, this set contains soulful originals and jazz standards such as ‘Blue Genes’ and ‘The Shadow of Your Smile,’ which was never released on any other Three Sounds album. The deluxe CD package features a 20-page book of rare photos and memorabilia including the classic image on the cover of the trio performing at the club taken by photographer Egill Gustafson plus essays by journalist Ted Panken, Seattle Jazz DJ Jim Wilke, and Resonance producers Zev Feldman and George Klabin. The Three Sounds were one of the most popular groups on the iconic Blue Note Records label during the late 1950s and early 1960s, and this album compiled from tapes originally broadcast on the radio show Jazz from the Penthouse shows why.

In May of 2010, when Resonance Records first embarked upon the adventure of unearthing and presenting historical jazz recordings to the world, George Klabin and I began looking into various archives for tapes to release. One day, George came to me with a list of tapes he’d come across; tapes in the possession of Jim Wilke, who years earlier had been the host of a syndicated Seattle-based radio program called Jazz After Hours.

Over the course of Jim’s storied career, he’s been a staunch advocate for jazz and its greatest protagonists. Indeed, over the years, Jim has succeeded in presenting a veritable Who’s Who of ’50s and ’60s jazz greats to the public.

From February 1962 through August 1968, Jim hosted the weekly radio program, Jazz from the Penthouse, on Seattle’s KING-FM. As a well-known radio personality in the Northwest, Jim developed a working relationship with Seattle’s legendary jazz club, the Penthouse, and consequently was able to air live performances by a wide array of artists while they performed at the club. These performances were broadcast direct to the public right as they happened. The shows not only went on the air live, Jim taped them, employing professional recording techniques and equipment. Over the years, Jim amassed an impressive collection of high-quality tapes; tapes that form a unique archive of the extraordinary music heard over the course of more than half a decade at the Penthouse by virtually all of the amazing music legends that played there.
