Veteran pianist Hank Jones is hardly slowing down at the age of 87, as heard on this beautifully recorded session in early 2006. With drummer Jimmy Cobb (who sticks to brushes) and Christian McBride rounding out his potent trio, Jones keeps old warhorses like “On Green Dolphin Street” fresh, giving ample space to his partner and adding a humorous detour into Billy Strayhorn’s “Rain Check.” Other highlights include his elegant treatment of his late brother Thad’s timeless ballad “A Child Is Born” and a hard driving take of Charlie Parker’s “Confirmation.” McBride shows depth beyond his years with strong accompaniment and swinging solos. This Hybrid Super Audio CD, recorded without any gimmickry such as remixing or compression, enables the listener to enjoy these intimate performances as if sitting in the studio with the players.

Sir Colin Davis was long recognised as a pre-eminent Haydn interpreter. During his Indian summer with the orchestra he recorded both Die Schöpfung (The Creation) and Die Jahreszeiten (The Seasons) for LSO Live. These symphonies presented here were recorded in 2011 during this same period, and make for revelatory listening.

Hawklords release TIME, their 10th album in 10 years, on 6th August 2021. The band members are: Tom Ashurst, Dave Pearce, ‘Dead’ Fred Reeves and Jerry Richards, with a guest appearance on the song, “Take Off Your Mask” from long-time Hawklords stalwart and former Hawkwind bassist, Adrian Shaw, plus the astounding saxophone and transcendental flute of Chris ‘Beebe’ Aldridge (Rudimental and Ben E King) threaded throughout the album. Recorded under lockdown conditions between November 2020 and May 2021, the album is described by the band as, “Observations of life, seen through the prism of TIME.” Featuring killer songs such as “Speed of Sound” a tribute to the aeronauts of the halcyon days of the Supersonic Age of the late 1940s, to the ear-worm Pop of “Turn You On” and the bone-crushing power of the dystopian “To The New Age” a song that would sit well on any Stooges album, TIME is a sci-fi fantasy trip down a rabbit hole full of surprises and instant hook-lines. The package is completed with stunning artwork from the British graphic designer, Martin Cook.

A veteran of numerous straight-ahead jazz, R&B, and pop sessions, drummer/composer Harvey Mason revisits his own fusion past on “Chameleon”. The Fourplay co-founder gathered both his peers and next-generation players for this revisitation of electric jazz classics from the ’70s. A blend of R&B, urban and cutting-edge Jazz, “Chameleon” takes its inspiration from the title track, which drummer Harvery Mason co-wrote with Herbie Hancock in 1973. Mason himself was eventually nicknamed the “Chameleon” for his ability to perform so many styles of music. This album updates classic tracks that Mason either wrote or played on, such as Hancock’s Chameleon, Grover Washington’s Black Frost, Donald Byrd’s Places And Spaces and Mason’s own Either Way.

At the close of the ’70s, Hall & Oates began inching toward a sleek, modern sound, partially inspired by the thriving punk and new wave scene and partially inspired by Daryl Hall’s solo debut, Sacred Songs, a surprising and successful collaboration with art rock legend Robert Fripp. While 1979’s X-Static found the duo sketching out this pop/soul/new wave fusion, it didn’t come into fruition until 1980’s Voices, which was their creative and commercial breakthrough. Essentially, Voices unveils the version of Hall & Oates that made them the most successful duo in pop history, the version that ruled the charts for the first half of the ’80s. During the ’70s, Hall & Oates drifted from folky singer/songwriters to blue-eyed soulmen, with the emphasis shifting on each record. On Voices, they place their pop craftsmanship front and center, and their production (assisted by engineer/mixer Neil Kernon) is clean, spacious, sleek, and stylish, clearly inspired by new wave yet melodic and polished enough for the mainstream. Thanks to the singles “Kiss on My List” and “You Make My Dreams” (and, to a lesser extent, their remake of the Righteous Brothers’ “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” and the original version of the heartbreaking ballad “Everytime You Go Away,” later popularized by Paul Young), the mainstream enthusiastically embraced Hall & Oates, and the ubiquitousness of these hits obscures the odder, edgier elements of Voices, whether it’s the rushed, paranoid “United State,” tense “Gotta Lotta Nerve (Perfect Perfect),” the superb Elvis Costello-styled “Big Kids,” the postmodern doo wop tribute “Diddy Doo Wop (I Hear the Voices),” or even John Oates’ goofy “Africa.” Apart from the latter, these are the foundation of the album, the proof that the duo wasn’t merely a stellar singles act, but expert craftsmen as writers and record-makers. The next few albums were bigger hits, but they topped the charts on the momentum created by Voices, and it still stands as one of their great records.

Hana Vu – Public Storage (2021) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 39:12 minutes | 441 MB | Genre: Indie Pop, Indie Rock, Electronic, Female Vocal
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Ghostly International

Signed to her first record deal at 17, Los Angeles singer-songwriter Hana Vu presaged Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodgrigo as a reminder of the very real pains of being a teenager. Her voice as wry and deadpan as Nico and sometimes even Nick Cave, she hasn’t exactly lightened up five years later. Vu describes her own music as “very invasive and intense”—which is a way of saying, it’s not passive listening; even if she doesn’t sound like early Hole, she certainly shares the same raw spirit. “Here are my bruises/ All my dents and my fuses/ Everything that I’ve got to prove,” she sings on the title track, cataloging the things she doesn’t believe in (failure, family); the drums drop out, then return stronger than before, as if fueled by having nothing left to lose. (It should be noted that Public Storage’s horrifying, rotten-mouth album art might even be too grotesque for Courtney Love.) Balanced by a sense of sweeping drama and glimmering ’80s ambience, “Keeper” is dripping with ache: “Oh, I take and steal and throw all my love away/ ‘Cause you’re surrounding me/ Oh, I’m fake, unreal/ And all other evil things you think that I could be.” Sometimes Vu goes all in: “Gutter” is a goth dirge, punctuated by ’90s fuzz guitar; same for “My House,” only with a little spooky levity from what sounds like woodwind. “This is the end of the world/ ‘Cause everything seems to get worse/ And all living things they fall on me/ And crush me into dirt,” Vu sings, making clear this is not Olivia Rodrigo pouting, “Where’s my fucking teenage dream?” She goes positively poppy on the bass-forward bounce of “Aubade,” which has a ring of St. Vincent dancefloor cool to it; but don’t be fooled: “If you stay the night/ I’ll have a new face/ Someone with a bright eye/ Nothing like me.” “Heaven” combines poking strings, shoegaze guitar and a chill drum beat. “World’s Worst” is so light and folky as to be almost new age (there’s even a bit of perky flute, for god’s sake), as Vu lists a litany of self-complaints: “I’m nothing but the world’s worst color … I am just the world’s worst talker … I promise I’m the world’s worst lover.” Getting older provokes existentialism and misery on “Everybody’s Birthday,” a Depeche Mode-like track that combines a stuttering drum beat, brattily sneering guitar and Vu trying out a higher register. She told NME of the inspiration behind “Maker”: “I didn’t grow up religious, but I always felt like, if there is some sort of God, he’s really mean. I felt this really punitive, oppressive force.” Infused with unexpected banjo, the song itself is dreamy, even as she begs, “Can you make me anybody else?/ Maker, make me… Breaker, break me.” – Shelly Ridenour

On Snowfire, innovative Norwegian pianist Bugge Wesseltoft brings a euro/nu-jazz feel to the album, while Dennis ‘Funkybone’ Rollins adds his trademark virtuoso trombone to the carnival-flavoured Ricochet.
