Heaven Or Hell is the third album from Imperium, the solo project of Finnish drummer Mika Brushane, who has been playing drums in various bands since 1981, in all genres from jazz to metal. The music is melodic rock/AOR and it has a big dose of 80’s feel and sounds in it. Mika writes all the songs and lyrics and plays the drums, bass, keyboards and sings backing vocals. In his autobiography, Igor Stravinsky wrote of his not having had any ‘great liking’ for the combination of strings and piano. That there nevertheless are a number of chamber works by him featuring the violin is to a large extent due to the violinist Samuel Dushkin. The two were introduced to each other by Stravinsky’s German music publisher who wanted to persuade him to compose a violin concerto. They obviously hit it off: their collaboration continued after the concerto had come into being in 1931, and they devised a recital programme to perform together on tours.

Talk about an artist having a natural gift that defies their age and appearance. Ida Mae’s Chris Turpin has a voice that doesn’t just sound a little lived in, it has the kind of sandpaper roughness that normally only develops after decades spent on the road. A life lived from joint to joint, no place to call home but a roadhouse and a dimly lit stage. And the way he plays a guitar, it’s the kind of wizardry you associate with those that have been down to the crossroads and done a trade-off with the devil. But while they may reside in the US today, Chris and fellow Ida Mae pilot Stephanie Jean hail from the Norfolk city of Norwich where rumours of devilish under-the-counter deals are rather thin on the ground amongst the take-out lattes and hipster scooters populating the train station these days. Still, to say the Turpin voice doesn’t match the youthful appearance of the man does understate matters. However, he does look every inch the rock star. Not just any old rocker either, in fact to me he resembles a young Steve Marriott. No massive claim but consider this; Chris can match the late Marriott for raw guttural hollering and sugar rush adrenaline so folks we really should sit up and pay attention. This pair have paid their dues for the last ten years on duty with their blues-rock indie band Kill It Kid. But Stephanie seemed to spend her entire time in that band with a disdainful scowl in her eye, as if she was thinking to herself “I’ve got so much more than this in the tank, just you wait and see”.

Taking their name from a Thelonious Monk quote, I Like To Sleep are three young Norwegian musicians, all 22 years old. Nicolas and Øyvind first met in high school in Trondheim before they joined up with Amund in a youth big band. It soon became apparent that they shared the same musical background centered around 70s progressive rock, classical music, jazz and improvisation. Soon after the trio was formed, first for fun, but soon with higher ambitions, they won the prestigious “Young Jazz Musicians of the Year” award in 2018. “Daymare” is the trio ́s second album, their debut was released on the small All Good Clean Records label in 2017. While their debut showed a lot of quality and promise, their new effort is a huge step forward on all accounts, especially considering their young age.

For over four years, the collective ensemble and de facto workshop known as Hush Point has been developing a unique approach to jazz performance. The quartet of trumpeter John McNeil, saxophonist Jeremy Udden, bassist Aryeh Kobrinsky and drummer Anthony Pinciotti have used rehearsal techniques to broaden their expression and develop a sort of group ESP. This work has produced brilliant compositions that require a high level of musicianship and group interplay. Hush Point’s evolution can be heard on their innovative third recording, Hush Point III.
