Jordi Savall – François Couperin: Les Apothéoses (2021)

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Alia Vox
Couperin is too easily seen as the tender, graceful and somewhat melancholy composer, whose soft-toned palette was the same as that which served the brush of Watteau. There was another Couperin who was a master of humour and whose claws were sharp. And yet another who was a musician involved in the aesthetic battles of this time and in the avant-garde. There were great battles, like the one to which the lovers of Italy rallied, and which led him to write, at the age of twenty-two or twenty-four, the first sonatas to appear in France. There were skirmishes, like that in which the sworn masters of the guild of minstrels opposed the royal musicians. In each case we find him participating zealously and actively – but also translating his own positions into music with his characteristic skill and lighthearted humour.

Jonas Kaufmann, Donald Runnicles , Berlin Deutsche Oper Orchestra – Kaufmann-Wagner (2013)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 01:14:18 minutes | 1,35 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Digital Booklet, Front Cover | © Decca Music Group Ltd.
Kaufmann’s fifth solo album on Decca is specially recorded for the Wagner anniversary year by the world’s leading Wagner tenor. Kaufmann and Wagner is a classic combination: “For any Wagnerians who’ve been slumbering, Fafner-like, in their caves during the last few years, here’s your wake-up call: Jonas Kaufmann is the tenor we’ve been waiting for” (Washington Post).
A selection of the great Heldentenor scenes and arias coupled with the complete (and rarely recorded by the tenor voice) Wesendonck Lieder. Also includes scenes from Die Walküre, Siegfried , Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Tannhäuser and Lohengrin (extended Grail Scene – Gralserzählung – with its original second verse).
Joined by one of the most formidable combinations in the opera world today – the chorus and orchestra of the Deutsche Oper, Berlin, under director Donald Runnicles – this recording is also a sonic spectacular, made in Decca’s time-honoured tradition.

Jonah Blacksmith – Twenty Seventeen (2017)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 45:51 minutes | 517 MB | Genre: Pop
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Sony Music Entertainment
The danish band Jonah Blacksmith counts brothers and founders Simon and Thomas Alstrup, who gathered four musicians and longtime friends back in 2011. The sonic landscape draws a fine line to the wilderness of the band members’ childhood area in the north-west of Denmark, where the North Sea meets weathered forests and rough moorland scenery. The music is about roots and relations. It is about the joy of loving along with the fear of losing. The soundscape combines a melodic, wooden intimacy of vocals and hand played instruments with the great width of atmospheric energy, where the pedal-steel guitar brushes with melancholic yet warm colors. The dynamic range of the six-piece band is wide and goes from conversation-like passages to bombastic orchestral parts with walls of sound and energy.

Anna B Savage – in|FLUX (2023)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/48 kHz | Time – 41:44 minutes | 470 MB | Genre: Alternative Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © City Slang
Anna B Savage has always asked many questions in her music, but on her new album “in|FLUX” the answers are no longer her goal. Vulnerability and curiosity have always been the key words to describe her work and on her second album she ruminates on the complexities and variables of being human, the pain or joy of love, loss and earthly connection and captures it all in a harrowing, inspiring and powerful way. The main difference between this and previous releases: She’s not afraid of what’s on the other side. She appreciates staying afloat in the open, uncertain gray area – even basking in it. Anna B Savage’s self-released debut EP caught the attention of Father John Misty and Jenny Hval, both of whom toured Europe with Savage. This was followed by the release of Savage’s debut album “A Common Turn”, which was released by City Slang in early 2021 and was highly praised. The album was included in many “Albums of the Year” lists, including Loud and Quiet and BBC Radio 6.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 02:30:28 minutes | 2,55 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Digital Booklet, Front Cover | © Naxos
Brahms had long been immersed in the folk traditions and spirit of Hungary’s musical repertoire, not least through the famous violinist Ede Reményi, for whom he played as piano accompanist. Brahms employed melodies that he had heard, as well as those based on sheet music, and in this album his Hungarian Dances are presented alongside their source material and variants, as well as some elements that Brahms omitted from his settings. Contextualised in this way, the heroic strength and dynamism, as well as the melancholy of the Dances can be heard as never before.
