A Crow Left of the Murder… is the fifth studio album by the American rock band Incubus. The music of album incorporates elements of art rock, alternative metal, jazz, pop and progressive rock. Kicking in like a compellingly acrimonious version of Rush (“Megalomaniac”) before meandering through what can rather uncomfortably be termed noodly, time-signature lottery jazz-metal terrain A Crow Left of Murder probably identifies Incubus as the average Pearl Jam fan’s second-choice for chin-stroking mosh action. Brendon O’Brien (Soundgarden, Pearl Jam) produces and singer Brandon Boyd possibly fancies himself as a bit of a Vedder-esque sage, even blustering “My secret arsenal is an infinite ageless ink well” on the otherwise acceptable metal squawk of “Pistola”.

Arriving three years after The Take Off and Landing of Everything — a span of time that also saw leader Guy Garvey taking a busman’s holiday with Courting the Squall — Little Fictions showcases a different but eminently recognizable Elbow. Seven albums into their career, Elbow remain a deliberate, contemplative group — that’s part of their DNA — but Little Fictions feels optimistic, particularly when it’s compared to the elegiac The Take Off and Landing of Everything. Where that album dwelled on the idea of loss, Little Fictions is its counterbalance, a record about new beginnings. This shift is evident in the music, which is lighter on its surface and complex at its foundation. Elbow emphasize electronic rhythms, sometimes even conjuring a groove, yet they still find space for chiming guitars, such as “All Disco,” which sounds like R.E.M. doing their best Velvet Underground impression. All of it adds up to an album that feels quietly hopeful, making it a tonic for troubled times.

In the five years that have elapsed since the release of Alvvays’ second album, Antisocialites, and their long-awaited third, Blue Rev, the Toronto-via-PEI band had to deal with every possible roadblock a band could face: lineup changes, demo thefts, gear-destroying basement floods—and that was before the pandemic. But fitting for a group who’ve always channeled life’s disappointments into songs brimming with wry humor and anthemic resolve, Alvvays emerge from those setbacks sounding thoroughly revitalized. While the band remain dedicated students of ’80s UK indie pop (check the simply Marr-velous jangle of “Pressed”), they’ve also become a more sonically expansive entity, tricking out the opener, “Pharmacist,” with a euphoric shoegaze overdrive and following Blonde Redhead’s neon-lined pathway into Euro synth-pop cabaret on “Very Online Guy.” But at the core of each song remains Molly Rankin’s captivatingly mercurial voice, which manages to convey unshakable strength, sardonic social commentary, and eternal sadness all at once. And that’s never more true than on “Belinda Says,” a poignant account of an unplanned pregnancy that invokes the namesake Go-Go’s singer, both as a beacon of hope and as an emblem of how, in times of great upheaval, pop music’s ingrained optimism sometimes just isn’t enough. “Bеlinda says that heaven is a place on еarth,” Rankin sings, before speaking to her own experience: “Well, so is hell.”

Courtney Barnett – Things Take Time, Take Time (2021) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 34:03 minutes | 718 MB | Genre: Alternative, Indie Pop
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Marathon Artists

Burned out from touring her last album, Courtney Barnett crashed at home in Melbourne just as pandemic lockdown was kicking in, and she was ready to shake off her blues. “I feel like I was intentionally trying to find the positives in things,” she has said. “The world is so pointless, and so fucked in so many ways, but there’s so many beautiful little small moments happening.” In that case, languid and countrified first song “Rae Street” must have been written when she first got home, because it both catalogs the little moments of a neighborhood—a kid learning to ride a bike, dog leashes entangling—and wonders of a couple painting their house: “What’s the point?/ It looks fine from up here.” But from there, she seems to settle in. “Take It Day By Day” is an appreciation of friendship inspired by a weekly Zoom conversation. While so many people have come to dread that method of communication, Barnett embraces it as a life-saver. “I found a deeper communication with people in my life—deeper conversations,” she has said. There are shades of Liz Phair as the sing-song lyrics goof on life advice: “Don’t stick that knife in the toaster/ Baby, life is like a rollercoaster/ And there’s nothing wrong with getting older.” Beautiful moments can also mean not taking romantic love for granted or letting it slip away over a disagreement. On “Before You Gotta Go,” she sings of “Pride like poison, always keeping score/ You don’t have to slam the door” and lightly chides, “Don’t you know I’m not the enemy/ Maybe let’s cut out caffeine.” As the Peter Buck-esque guitars chime, the song starts off with the drums pacing, as if in a confined space and waiting to run, then given a little more room to pick up speed on the second verse. Meanwhile, Barnette reaches a realization: “If something were to happen, my dear/ I wouldn’t want the last words you hear/ To be unkind.” There’s also an early R.E.M. vibe in the jaunty jangle of “Write A List Of Things To Look Forward To,” which takes its name from something a friend suggested to Barnett as a way to pull her out of a funk. The guitar is bright and sunny as it spins a melody perfect for cruising open roads with your arm out the car window. Elsewhere, there are shades of “Range Life”-era Pavement on the cozily meandering “Sunfair Sundown.” “Splendour” is a romantic swoon, as punch-drunk as a 1950s prom theme. And set to the ’70s country stylings of “If I Don’t Hear from You Tonight,” Barnett sings, “If loving you’s a crime, then gimme those front page headlines.” Her third album may not have the explosive pop spirit of “Aqua Profunda!” and “Elevator Operator” from her debut, but her wry lyrics just keep getting better and better. – Shelly Ridenour

Concrete Blonde – Bloodletting (1990/2017) [Official Digital Download 24bit/192kHz]

Though the sudden embrace of the trappings of goth culture via Anne Rice was a bit odd, given Napolitano’s long-standing fascination with both Catholic and Mexican imagery (and the elements of sex and death prevalent in both) it wasn’t too strange. Her songwriting and singing focus remains much more roots-oriented, as the opening strut/stroll of “Bloodletting (The Vampire Song)” makes clear. Not that she and the band can’t kick out the jams as well — immediately following that is “The Sky Is a Poisonous Garden,” a punk-speed thrash with deliciously decadent imagery to boot. The most well known song was “Joey,” which actually got some top 40 airplay; while it has a certain catchiness to it, ultimately it comes off as a less successful Heart song from the same era, which is saying something. Far more successful is nearly everything else on the album, from the dark chime of “Caroline,” addressing a departed friend, to the soothing “Lullabye,” which far from being a mere kiddie tune is a great love song with some fantastic guitar from Mankey. R.E.M.’s Peter Buck adds mandolin to “Darkening of the Light,” which adds to the song’s mysterious, haunting edge, while “I Don’t Need a Hero” is barely there, the softest of music accompanying Napolitano’s lyric. Her singing throughout Bloodletting is passionate and catchy, with a deep throaty ache on many cuts. Everything wraps up with a version of Andy Prieboy’s “Tomorrow, Wendy.” Having done a duet with him on his own recording of the song, she takes full lead here, delivering a bravura performance of the bitter, heartbreaking lyric.

Colin Steele Quartet – Diving for Pearls: Jazz Interpretations of the Pearlfishers Songbook (2017) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

This project – a tribute to an obscure Glaswegian indie band by an equally obscure Edinburgh jazz musician – is an oddly satisfying exercise in wilful Caledonian obscurity. The Pearlfishers, led by David Scott of the BMX Bandits, have been recording dreamy, elegant, adult-oriented pop since the early 90s, pitched somewhere between Brian Wilson, Steely Dan and Prefab Sprout. Colin Steele, the self-taught trumpeter behind his own Scottish-accented modern jazz quintet and jazz-folk outfit Stramash, here dismantles 10 of Scott’s cleverly written songs and reassembles them as glistening modern jazz, his Harmon-muted trumpet turning the melodies into a pleasantly chromatic blur. It would be fascinating to hear Steele apply this approach to the music of other indie bands, Scottish or otherwise.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 39:05 minutes | 451 MB | Genre: Indie Rock, Psychedelic Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Yep Roc Records

Artificial Countrysides is Athens, Georgia-based Elf Power’s 14th album and first for Yep Roc Records. The band expand their sound on this record to glorious effect, adding marimba, harpsichord, synth bass, distorted drum machine loops, and mellotron to their time tested mix of fuzz guitars, moog keyboards, pummeling drums, and layered acoustic guitars, achieving a satisfying and unique synthesis of traditional and futuristic sounds. Lyrically the album mirrors this approach by discussing the difficulties and advantages of dealing with modern life’s digital and artificial landscape, balanced with the natural world. Elf Power formed in Athens, GA in 1994 and have released 14 albums, two EPs, and a handful of singles, while touring North America, Europe, and Japan many times playing alongside acts like R.E.M., Flaming Lips, Dinosaur Jr., Neutral Milk Hotel, Guided by Voices, Arcade Fire and many more. Albums such as 1998’s Dave Fridmann-produced A Dream In Sound and 2008’s collaboration with the late folk rock icon Vic Chesnutt, Dark Developments, have cemented the bands’ reputation as the finest purveyors of modern melodic psychedelic folk rock around. The band became known as a member of the much heralded Elephant 6 Collective, which includes their friends and collaborators Neutral Milk Hotel, Apples in Stereo, Olivia Tremor Control, Of Montreal, and many more.

Vetiver is the long-running stage and recording name of San Francisco’s Andy Cabic. ‘Up On High’ is his seventh studio album and the first since 2015. Vetiver has toured around the world on headline tours and supporting artists that include Wilco, The Shins, Fleet Foxes, Beach House, Bob Weir & Phil Lesh, and Vashti Bunyan. Vetiver craft nuanced, understated songs that reward careful listening, building a rich duality; a space where sunshine is only a chord away from melancholy, an introspective lyric underlies an extroverted chorus and subtlety tries to be outgoing in an effort to connect the dots of life’s ellipsis. ‘Up On High’ was recorded with longtime collaborator Thom Monahan (Neko Case, Bedouine, Fruit Bats, The Donkeys, Peter Bjorn and John, Beachwood Sparks, Little Joy). Instrumentation comes from an all-world cast that includes Eric Johnson (Fruit Bats, EDJ), Gabriel Noel (Kendrick Lamar, Father John Misty, Tyler the Creator), Dan Iead (Kevin Morby, Cass McCombs), Josh Adams (Bedouine, Wild Nothing), and Tim Ramsey (Fruit Bats, Little Wings).
