This expanded Let It Bleed edition of the Replacements’ fourth studio album Tim—the final with their full, original lineup—is a marvelous, absolutely necessary corrective to the muddled-sounding original release from 1985. Tim found the band at their creative peak, with some of the best songs Paul Westerberg, Chris Mars, and brothers Tommy and Bob Stinson would ever write, fresh under their belts. Here we get to enjoy not only the demos and an entire live show that are staples of the expanded reissue game, but we get to hear a version of the original album that’s worthy of the material, thanks to veteran producer and engineer Ed Stasium.

The Decemberists – What A Terrible World, What A Beautiful World (2015) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

The Decemberists – What A Terrible World, What A Beautiful World (2015)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 53:04 minutes | 607 MB | Genre: Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Capitol Records

The Decemberists belatedly embraced their indie pop sensibilities (or at very least their fondness for R.E.M.) on 2011’s The King Is Dead, and were rewarded with a number one chart placing and the group’s greatest commercial success to date, leading some to wonder if Colin Meloy and his bandmates were going to go for more hooks or return to the more ornate sound of their earlier work now that they had a large audience waiting for the follow-up. As it turns out, 2014’s What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World finds the Decemberists managing to have it both ways; if anything, many of these songs are brighter and hookier than those on The King Is Dead, but if this is pop, it’s pop that’s keenly intelligent, melodically adventurous, obsessively literate, and perfectly willing to explore sadness and disappointment rather than just the upbeat moods that are expected to accompany catchy melodies. The melodies on “Lake Song” and “Till the Water Is All Long Gone” may be more streamlined than you’d hear on Picaresque or The Crane Wife, but the arrangements are richly detailed, playing on the dynamics of Chris Funk’s guitars, Jenny Conlee’s keyboards and accordions, and John Moen’s percussion, and the group takes much pleasure in the dour beauty of its melodies. The band also embraces its upbeat side on this album with numbers like “The Wrong Year” and “Philomena” (the latter pondering teenage lust as only the Decemberists can), and the opening track, “The Singer Addresses His Audience,” is a witty but cutting meditation on the notion of fame, its impact on the culture, and where the Decemberists fit into the puzzle in the wake of hit records and appearances on Parks & Recreation. There’s still more than enough folk in the Decemberists’ approach to make them stand apart from their peers on the upper reaches of the pop charts, and the intuitive smarts of their stylistic vision are still front and center, but What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World is an album where the creative sprawl is more a matter of how this divergent selection of melodies and moods interacts, rather than how many elements can be folded into one song; this is very clearly the Decemberists, but with a new kind of focus in their songs and arrangements that makes it clear this album’s sound is a result of creative evolution, not an offering to their newer, larger audience, and it’s a sweet and sour wonder that rewards repeated listening. –Mark Deming

Buck Meek – Haunted Mountain (2023) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 42:15 minutes | 905 MB | Genre: Alt. Country, Singer-Songwriter, Folk Rock, Country Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © 4AD

As a guitarist in the beloved band Big Thief, Buck Meek traffics in a precious brand of indie folk. On his own, the former busker with a distinctive twang is informed by the country sounds of places he’s lived, including Southern California’s Topanga Canyon and central Texas. There are traces of Gillian Welch and Townes Van Zandt in both his songwriting and storytelling. There’s also a sunshiny brightness to his Americana, as on the spirited “Cyclades.” Guitars get raucous, like colts kicking up dust, as Meek recounts family lore about his father driving a motorcycle around a Siskiyou County, California forest and running into a gang of elk, and his mother playfully letting go of the steering wheel in Greece and sliding across the line toward a truck. “Secret Side” is beautiful and gently tumbling, as Meek sings about coming home and unexpectedly hearing your partner singing in a voice you’ve never heard before, singing words you’ve never heard before—and how none of us can ever wholly know another person. His voice cracks, a sort of exclamation point, as he marvels, “I saw you feel without a reason.” Spare and simple, “Lullabies” lets Meek’s poignant voice shine against the quietly strumming guitar as he describes watching the agony and otherworldly delirium of childbirth, lifting lines from “You Are My Sunshine” while Mat Davidson’s fiddle weeps quietly in the corner. The title track, co-written with Jolie Holland, is an amiable amble; the music is rustic and sunny (thanks in part to Davidson’s pedal steel) and the lyrics like a dreamscape: “Every dewdrop on this haunted mountain/ Is like a tiny crystal ball/ Early in the morning/ I peer into the living leaves/ And prophesy with the light of dawn.” “Paradise” is lazy Sunday morning soulful, with Meek stretching to reach falsetto heights. “Didn’t Know You Then” is a sweet country jangle with the beautiful looseness of R.E.M. covering Velvet Underground songs (see: Dead Letter Office). “Undae Dunes” finds Meek playing with dynamics—a determined, Flaming Lips-ish marching beat; howling, confused guitar—as he spins a tale about a boy who willingly goes up off with extraterrestrials: “Blue eyed boy, shining like a movie/ In corduroys kissing Susie … UFO touched down/ Climb on Jim/ “Please don’t go” she begged/ But he was gone with the wind.

Russ Johnson Quartet – Reveal (2023)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/48 kHz | Time – 51:42 minutes | 569 MB | Genre: Jazz

“Johnson’s sterling sound and quicksilver mind place him firmly in the modern jazz tradition.” — DownBeat

From the opening intervals of “Skips,” trumpeter and composer Russ Johnson’s Reveal makes good on the promise inherent in the album’s title. Slyly unveiling interconnected themes and infectious grooves, the chord-less quartet — an unusual front-line of Johnson’s trumpet and Mark Feldman’s violin with drummer Timothy Daisy and bassist Ethan Philion — revels in a vast palette of sonic combinations and permutations. Along the way Johnson and his associates navigate an impressive range of material, from the funky odd-meter groove that suddenly emerges in “Skips” to a masterful plunger elegy for Jamie Branch (“The Long Branch”) and a synthesis of the structured freedom of the AACM with lush post-Romantic harmonies (“The Slow Reveal”). “My entire career has been built on playing music in the cracks between ‘modern jazz’ and more ‘improvised’ musics, says Johnson. “I do not draw a distinction between the two.”

Mac McCaughan sounds really, really tired of being angry and frustrated all the time. It’s arguably the most relatable sentiment on Wild Loneliness, Superchunk’s newest—and most contemplative—album yet. Who among us, after four years of the Trump administration and two years (and counting) of the greatest public health crisis in a century, isn’t exhausted? If there’s a common thread to so many of the memes, blog posts, and expressions of mental health issues that so many people turn to daily in an effort to find some common ground and inspiration, it’s that daily life has been a grueling ordeal for awhile now.

In that vein, the songs on the band’s 12th album (not including essential compilation releases Tossing Seeds and Incidental Music) speak to the listener in a manner that’s direct even for a heart-on-sleeve romantic like McCaughan. After 2018’s What A Time To Be Alive emitted such a cry of anger, perhaps the change of pace—slower tempos, sunnier melodies, reflective themes—is inevitable. Being pissed-off can feel good (and cathartic, when paired with such barn-burning songs), but it’s harder to embrace those emotions in the long run. At the end of the day, when you’ve expended your allotment of anger, what’s left? That’s where Wild Loneliness comes in.

Norah Jones – The Fall (2009/2012)
DSF Stereo DSD64, 1 bit/2,82 MHz | Time – 45:59 minutes | 1,82 GB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download – Source: AcousticSounds | Booklet, Front Cover | © Blue Note Records/Analogue Productions

Part of Analogue Productions’ reissue of the Norah Jones’ solo catalog, featuring the individual albums Come Away With Me, Feels Like Home, Not Too Late, The Fall and Little Broken Hearts. Each album is also featured in exclusive LP and SACD box sets that include Norah’s Covers album!

Norah has taken a new direction on The Fall, experimenting with different sounds and a new set of collaborators, including Jacquire King, a noted producer and engineer who has worked with Kings of Leon, Tom Waits and Modest Mouse. Richly detailed and vocally lush on this DSD format reissue by Analogue Productions, The Fall, Jones’ fourth album, may surprise some of Jones’ die-hard fans, Billboard magazine notes. During the 13-song set, Jones ditches the gentle piano playing of her previous work and tears into fresh, beat-savvy arrangements, playing plenty of electric guitar and exploring the piercing quality of Wurlitzer electric piano. Jones’ smoky voice and soulful veneer highlight the opening track and first single, “Chasing Pirates.”

Jones displays a slinky kind of ambience on “Light As a Feather (co-written with Ryan Adams). The social commentary “It’s Gonna Be” offers a garage-rock attitude, and “You’ve Ruined Me” has a rich Americana flavor. But Jones is still a little bit country (“Tell Yer Mama”) and a little bit rock’n’roll (“Stuck”). Overall, writes reviewer Gary Graff, Jones straddles those lines in an entirely different manner than she ever has before.
For The Fall, Jones enlisted several songwriting collaborators, including Ryan Adams and Okkervil River’s Will Sheff, as well as her frequent partners Jesse Harris and Richard Julian. Musicians include drummers Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M.) and James Gadson (Bill Withers), keyboardist James Poyser (Erykah Badu, Al Green) and guitarists Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello) and Smokey Hormel (Johnny Cash, Joe Strummer).

Over the last few years Belgian artist Milow has emerged as one of Europe’s most exciting young talents: a plugged-in singer-songwriter with the ability to touch a crowd and the pop know-how required to make great records. He’s an old-school soul with a new-fashioned sensibility. Milow’s music gleams with the inherited song craft of his heroes but it also reflects a point of view all his own. For many artists, success means stop; for Milow, who has sold more than a million albums in Europe, it’s a reason to go. After five years of non-stop touring and having released several well-received albums, Milow moved to Southern California in 2012. Not to start conquering the US, but to recharge his batteries in a sun-drenched region where he had lived before. With the same humble spirit that originally inspired him to start writing songs as a teenager, he patiently worked on his next move in seclusion in a city where no one knew him.

Georgia Blue is a labor of love. On election day 2020, when I saw that there was a good chance the state of Georgia might go blue, I came up with an idea: to record an album of Georgia-related songs as a thank you to the state and donate the money to a Georgia based non-profit organization.

I will admit my motivations were a bit selfish. For years, I’ve been looking for an excuse to record these songs with my band and some friends. The songs on this album are some of my favorite Georgia-related songs, but the tracklist is not meant to be comprehensive. I would love to cover Outkast and 2 Chainz, but I don’t think the finished product would be very good. We’re a rock band, so we covered rock songs. We have roots in blues and R&B, so we enlisted some brilliant artists to help us pull off songs by Precious Bryant, James Brown, and Gladys Knight.

My favorite part of the Georgia Blue recording process was having the opportunity to work with these very special artists, and I thank them: Amanda Shires, Brittney Spencer, Adia Victoria, Brandi Carlile, Julien Baker, Béla Fleck, Chris Thile, Steve Gorman, Peter Levin, and John Paul White.

I hope you enjoy listening to these recordings as much as we enjoyed making them. Keep listening to good music and fighting the good fight. – Jason Isbell

‘The Performer’ stands in stark contrast to the electro-hedonism of Righton’s work with Klaxons. Instead, it spins through various points from 1970 onwards. It touches on the suave art-lounge of Roxy Music, the jangly grooves of R.E.M., the sumptuous psychedelia of latter day Beach Boys, and the songwriting gift of Nick Lowe.
