Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Compost Records

We’ve got awesome feedback, amazing quotes for Future Sounds Of Kraut Vol. 1, very good sales, too, so here is Vol. 2: 17 modern krauty electronic tracks (9 of them exclusive) inspired by Kraftwerk, Can, Neu!, Cluster, Harmonia, Klaus Schulze and many others. Curated and compiled by Compost artist Fred und Luna. The collage on the cover – like on Vol.1 – was exclusively made by the fantastic artist Norika Nienstedt from Kraut metropolis Düsseldorf. Future sounds of Kraut, what’s it all about? Maybe Volume 2 will bring it to light for you…It’s not easy at all or even impossible to define the musical genre “Kraut”. Nevertheless, Compost Records and Fred und Luna strike out on the path to find the diverse elements of German electronic music of the 1970s and 1980s and their effects on the new German and international music scene. After the immense success of Volume 1 a follow-up volume was soon started, tying in stylistically with its predecessor and furthermore ? as this is one basic principle of the series ? expanding the musical spectrum by adding new krauty elements step by step. So now, besides stylistic followings to Volume 1, you will hear some more club oriented and experimental tracks.

Ragazze Quartet – But Not My Soul: Price, Dvořák & Giddens (2024) [Official Digital Download 24bit/192kHz]

Ragazze Quartet – But Not My Soul: Price, Dvořák & Giddens (2024)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 01:00:51 minutes | 2,06 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Channel Classics

Ragazze Quartet perform works by two female composers Rhiannon Giddens (*1977) and Florence Price (1887-1953), combined with the ‘American’ String Quartet No.12 by Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904). Florence Price was the first African-American woman to be recognized for her symphonies, yet her music was forgotten for many years. Her String Quartet No.2 is a mix of European romanticism, her ‘Southern’ roots, the emerging blues and African-American spirituals. The title of the album derives from a song Rhiannon Giddens wrote after seeing a 19th-century advertisement for a 22-year-old female slave whose 9-month-old baby was also for sale, but ‘at the purchaser’s option’. One of the lines of the song is: “You can take my blood. But not my soul.” The string quartet arrangement was made by Jacob Garchik in 2016, commissioned by the Kronos Quartet’s ‘50 For The Future’ project. Ragazze Quartet: “This album is a tribute to composers who, despite opposition, have always remained true to their soul. Although our own souls may not directly be related to the work songs of African slaves, Czech folk music, or African-American spirituals, we want to contribute to making their voices, souls and music heard.”

This is a bastardized re-recording of Metallica’s album St. Anger. The songs are shorter, the production is better, and the snare drum is more tolerable. I took some creative liberties with the songs and did what I thought would benefit them. Everything has been re-recorded from the ground up, except for the vocals which were extracted from the original album.

This live recording of the Matt Anderson Quartet from the middle of their May 2023 U.K. tour is a snapshot of the band at their best: stretching out on a set of original tunes with a characteristically open, interactive and risk-taking approach.

The band’s strengths as an ensemble are particularly apparent in a live setting, having been refined through eight years of gigging, touring and recording together, a longevity rare in today’s constantly-changing jazz scene. The Leeds audience excitement is also palpable as the band return to a venue they have played at many times over the years, HEART in Headingley, as part of the city’s second annual jazz festival.

On March 8, 2024, the Canadian artist and winner of the Juno Award will release a new album. She is returning to the origins of her career and this time devoting herself more to traditional Celtic music.

The Road Back Home was recorded in the summer of 2023 while she was playing four folk festivals in southern Ontario. It was a return to her roots, her first songs, the local musicians – a kind of musical return to where it all began. The incredible energy and spontaneity of these local performances inspired her to create this new album.

The album consists of 10 songs with some songs going back to McKennitt’s earliest career in folk music, songs that have never been recorded before.

The Road Back Home will be released on CD and 180g vinyl and will of course be available on all digital services including a Dolby Atmos mix by Jeff Wolpert.

Prokofiev’s Symphony No 3 is dedicated to Myaskovsky and first performed by the Orchestre Symphonique de Paris on 17 May 1929. It is one of Prokofiev’s most intense works, unleashing a barrage of confrontational energy that carries with it as much relentless forward momentum as pulverising anxiety. ‘I had never before felt anything similar when listening to music,’ remarked Prokofiev’s colleague, the pianist Sviatoslav Richter, on hearing the piece; ‘it felt to me like an apocalypse’.

La tempête, Simon-Pierre Bestion – Scarlatti & Dvořák: Stabat Mater (2024) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

La tempête, Simon-Pierre Bestion – Scarlatti & Dvořák: Stabat Mater (2024)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 01:33:36 minutes | 1,65 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Alpha Classics

Simon-Pierre Bestion has chosen to mirror two Stabat Mater that are more than 150 years apart: “in these two works I can feel the same tonal language, the same expression of sorrow” says the founder of La Tempête… “I have decided to ‘augment’ Scarlatti’s orchestration and ‘diminish’ Dvořák’s, so they can meet on even ground. To the Scarlatti I have added string parts sometimes doubling the vocal lines, colla parte , as was often done at the period: this not only allows the sound to be amplified, but adds an extra timbre to the voice. For the Dvořák, I have transcribed the original piano part into its minimum orchestral dimension, that is, for strings. This creates a common sound world between the two works – I would even say they have the same kind of lyricism in common, with just the timbres of the piano, organ and theorbo standing out.”

My works spans from solo to orchestral pieces, as well as works for choir, and installations. I also perform, playing guitars, objects and electronics.

Initially a band musician, experimenting and improvisation has maintained important and natural approaches in my praxis. Deeply motivated by music making as a social activity, much of my music is created in close collaboration with the performers. Recurring topics in my works are imitation reactions, as well as phenomenas of swarm formations, and emergent structures found in nature. Recent years different approaches and inclusions of ways to work with memory has been important to me.

In 2008/09 I was one of the co-founders of Ensembles neoN, a collective of performers and composers. As part of Ensemble neoN I have worked with performers and composers like Oren Ambarchi, Alvin Lucier, Phill Niblock, Marina Rosenfeld, Susanna Wallumrød, Jan St. Werner, and Catherine Lamb, among many others.

In 2022 I was the recipient of the biennial Arne Nordheim Composer’s prize.

What is music but a convergence of story, people, and place? It’s a question that Heidi Radtke’s debut album CONVERGENCE for soprano, alto, and tenor sax asks earnestly, an elegant meshing of the heartbeats behind the sounds of eight living composers, strung together by the laughter and conversation woven into each exploration, and the saxophone’s ability to tell its tale. The full breadth of Radtke’s capability is on display as she navigates the variety of narratives, messages, and sonic uniquities in the landscape of CONVERGENCE, sometimes bolstered forward with a bubbly charm — in the “chicken clucks” of Barry Cockcroft’s Ku Ku — and sometimes with a powerful, reminding grace, — Rahsaan Barber’s Breonna Taylor (How Many More?) – but always with a special musicality.
