Pianist Simon Trpčeski’s latest album Friendship is celebratory and open-hearted.
Friendship comes out of a strong sense of belief, stemming from his country’s struggle throughout the age, his love for music, his faith in humanity’s inner strength and, above all, his friends and colleagues who made this recording happen. Mirroring this confidence-embracing approach, the neatly curated repertoire includes Brahms’s fiery Piano Quartet No. 3 in C minor, a work full of love, power and boldness. Connesson’s jaw-dropping Divertimento is presented in a fantastic newly available arrangement by percussionist Vlatko Nushev. And sandwiched between the two, Pande Shahov’s three-movement Quintet ends in a triumphant manner.

During lockdown last year, J Spaceman would walk through an empty ‘Roman London’ where the world was ‘full of birdsong and strangeness’, trying to make sense of all the music playing in his head at the time. The mixers and mixes of his new record weren’t working out yet. Spaceman plays 16 different instruments on ‘Everything Was Beautiful’ which was put down at eleven different studios, as well as at his home. He also employed more than 30 musicians and singers including his daughter Poppy, long-time collaborator and friend John Coxon, string and brass sections, choirs and finger bells and chimes from the Whitechapel Bell Foundry. Eventually the mixes got there and ‘Everything Was Beautiful’ was achieved. The result is some of the most ‘live’ sounding recordings that Spiritualized have released since the ‘Live at the Albert Hall’ record of 1998, around the time of ‘Ladies & Gentlemen, We Are Floating In Space’.

From its inception with landmark works like Edgard Varèse’s Ionization (1929-31), Amadeo Roldán’s Ritmicas (1930), or John Cage’s First Construction (In Metal) (1939), the percussion ensemble has been associated with innovations in rhythm—with driving, pulsating, and complex explorations of the domain of time. The titles of these works suggest this aesthetic, calling conspicuous attention to their own modernity and hinting at a type of abstraction and scientific outlook towards the investigation of new materials. Alongside these rhythmic explorations, however, there has always been another aspect of percussion music: an intense preoccupation with the nature of sound. From instruments fashioned out of everyday objects to those with long and distinguished histories, the sheer variety available to the percussionist is staggering, as is the range of different sounds each instrument can produce.

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Alpha Classics
“I discovered Rachmaninov’s Vespers singing in a choir, and the work made a genuine emotional impact on me! This music gives off an impression of naturalness and “simplicity”, yet in fact its architecture is complex and innovative for its time in the quasi-orchestral treatment of the voices. I wanted to place the work in a liturgical context that I conceived by drawing my inspiration from the Orthodox ceremonies I have been lucky enough to attend in Russia and Romania. The special characteristic and the beauty of this Vigil service (which in the Orthodox churches includes both Vespers and Matins) is that it accompanies the prayers of the faithful from dusk until sunrise”.
