With a plethora of available recordings of J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations, some of near legendary status, one approaches yet another addition to the discography of this masterwork with trepidation. In few other instances does the weight of a recorded legacy make the challenge of offering a fresh, individual voice (and of overcoming the danger of being deemed inconsequential) so daunting. All the more reason then to admire Jory Vinikour’s magisterial new account, which convincingly dispels the listener’s fears that this is ‘just another’ version. By turns ruminative, lyrical, brilliant, and regal, this release warrants the following recommendation: even if you already own several outstanding recordings of the Goldberg Variations, do not fail to check out this one.

“The Emoji Movie” is a 2017 American 3D computer-animated comedy film directed by Tony Leondis and written by Leondis, Eric Siegel and Mike White, based on the emoji symbols. It stars the voices of T. J. Miller, James Corden, Anna Faris, Maya Rudolph, Steven Wright, Rob Riggle, Jennifer Coolidge, Christina Aguilera, Sofía Vergara, Sean Hayes and Patrick Stewart. The film centers on Gene, a multi-expressional emoji who lives in a teenager’s phone, and who sets out on a journey to become a normal meh emoji like his parents. The movie was just destroyed by critics but the score was written by Patrick Doyle and I am always happy to listen to his music. This is the only reason that I am interested in this score since I always have a hard time with silly comedy music and also I think 60 minutes is much too long for a score like this.

Paul Badura-Skoda (6 October 1927 – 25 September 2019) was an Austrian pianist.
A student of Edwin Fischer, Badura-Skoda first rose to prominence by winning first prize in the Austrian Music Competition in 1947. In 1949, he performed with conductors including Wilhelm Furtwängler and Herbert von Karajan; over his long career, he recorded with conductors including Hans Knappertsbusch, Hermann Scherchen, and George Szell. Along with his contemporaries Friedrich Gulda and Jörg Demus, he was part of the so-called “Viennese Troika”.

“Jubilation” was included on Anka’s 1972 studio album (also titled Jubilation) and released by Buddah Records in May. It was one of the two songs written by Anka on the album, with the other being “She’s a Lady”. “Jubilation” was first sent to United States Top 40 radio stations in 1972 as an airplay single, accompanied by the release of two different 7″ singles. In a September 1972 Billboard article describing how American music would often find more success in Canada, the author claimed that despite Anka having Canadian citizenship, “Jubilation” was listed as “domestic content” on Canadian radio stations.
