2014 was clearly the year of Lisa Stansfield. After a long absence from the world of recorded music, the Grammy nominated, multi BRIT, Ivor Novello and Silver Clef Award winner returned in grand style: her latest studio album “Seven” charted all over Europe, in the Top 15 in both UK and Germany, and was followed by an sold-out tour all over Europe as well as the remix album “Seven+”. Recorded in Lisa’s hometown Manchester at Bridgewater Hall on September 7, 2014 during her European Tour, “Live In Manchester” presents the great pop and soul singer in front of an enthusiastic audience, at ease with herself and her music. Lisa Stansfield and her talented band including songwriting partner and husband Ian Devaney, whose credits include “The Bodyguard” and “Indecent Proposal” soundtracks, as well as a horn section, performed her hit songs like “All Around The World” and “Change” along with new tracks from her latest album including “Can’t Dance” and “So Be It”. Filmed by Tim Sidwell (“Celebrating Jon Lord”) and mastered at Abbey Road Studios, this impressive performance clearly marked Lisa’s return to the international stage and confirmed her status as one of the UK’s premier recording artists. “Live In Manchester” will be released on 2CD, DVD and Blu-ray on August 28th, 2015 on earMUSIC. The bonus material, an over 25 minutes interview gives great, in-depth insight into the artist minds and completes the high quality production. Lisa’s career has spanned over 3 decades, boasting sales of nearly 20 million records and a string of international top 10 hits including: “All Around The World”, “Change”, “All Woman” and “Someday”. The Bottle Rockets brand of populist, Midwestern, brawny Rock’N’Roll is a sound so effortless, it’s easy to take their craft for granted; a sound so universal, yet unmistakably The Bottle Rockets. They’ve crushed rowdy Friday night crowds, convinced sitting audiences to get on their feet, and pulled weary festival onlookers across muddy fields to the front of the stage. With their 12th album, South Broadway Athletic Club, the quartet gives a master class in capturing the beauty of everyday life, and painting a portrait of ongoing hope. (more…)

The years before, during and after the French Revolution were a turning-point for wind ensembles throughout the world. They developed from being small ensembles, with each instrument represented in pairs, to being something much larger. At the same time, the repertoire moved rapidly from the chamber music for wind instruments of Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven to much larger works of almost orchestral dimensions by a new generation of composers.

The Staff Band of the Norwegian Armed Forces has on this recording chosen music by composers who all made significant contributions to the evolvement of the wind orchestra and to the literature for wind orchestra that we know today. The music is an exquisite selection of French drama, romance and epic tone poems composed at times of considerable political turbulence. It could be precisely this political backdrop, combined with the wind orchestra’s hitherto unexplored potential, that goes some way towards explaining why composers like Berlioz, Bozza, Saint-Saëns, Tomasi, Dukas and Milhaud chose to write large-scale works for the wind orchestra – works that are still considered an important part of the standard wind ensemble repertoire today, a repertoire the Staff Band of the Norwegian Armed Forces performs with the elegance, virtuosity and energy the music demands; The Triumphal Way!

The second ECM album from Swiss/Italian trio Third Reel takes its open-plan music to another level. Emanuele Maniscalco, Nicolas Masson and Roberto Pianca all bring music into Third Reel, and each of them has his own distinct compositional signature, but from the outset their pieces are “always conceived as material for multiple, unpredictable developments,” as Maniscalco says. Compositional guidelines are like gateways into fields to explore. Masson’s elegant clarinet and lean-toned tenor are emphasized on this recording, Maniscalco floats between drums and piano, quietly lyrical on both instruments, and Pianca is most often a kind of real-time orchestrator, subtly enfolding the interaction with swelling sustained chords, or underlining it with thick drones.

Most of the first half of the album features primarily Emanuele Maniscalco’s compositions, and a chamber music feel, aligning the group on this showing to the reflective tradition of Giuffre and Bley – perhaps most evident on “Afterwards”, where Maniscalco’s rubato piano is shadowed by Masson’s clarinet. The second half of the programme is comprised mostly of Nicolas Masson’s pieces, including “White”, dedicated to Masabumi Kikuchi, as well as the album’s title track, its melody unfolded by a serpentine tenor line gaining steadily in power. Of Roberto Pianca’s pieces, “Lara’s Song” is a pensive ballad and “Happy People” less jolly than its title might imply, with active broken-time drums flickering behind a stately theme. Unusually for a group that takes chances with its material, Third Reel keeps things concise, none of the 13 pieces in the programme passing the five-minute mark.

Many More Days was recorded at Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI, Lugano, in August 2014 with Manfred Eicher as producer.

Seal – Seal IV (2003/2004) [FLAC 24bit/88.2kHz]

Besides taking his usual multi-year hiatus before releasing Seal IV, the artist scrapped a whole album’s worth of material, feeling he couldn’t stand behind the strength of the songs (should this be Seal IV.I?). It’s disappointing, then, that the songs on Seal IV lack any of the Grammy-grabbing flair of his earlier releases. What saves it is a conviction that is high enough to overcome, a voice that is more driven than usual, and some genuine moments of songwriting inspiration. “Let Me Roll” has a cool swagger and fun wordplay, and the yearning ballad “Loneliest Star” is only a few steps away from “Kiss from a Rose.” Opener “Get It Together” offers an Up With People understanding of the state of the world with its “everyone is beautiful” sentimentality, but it’s the funky backbeat and gritty vocals that make it more Al Green than Lee Greenwood. A re-recording of Seal’s collaboration with Jakatta, “My Vision” is given new life through more restrained than usual production from Trevor Horn. The absence of Horn’s usual bombast throughout the album allows Seal’s voice (in every sense of the word) to be the focus. It’s a good move, and if the totally solid Jakatta-sourced track is any indication, a break from Horn might be beneficial next time. Despite being heavy with unexceptional tunes, Seal IV has enough going for it to warrant the next four years of anticipation. –AllMusic Review by David Jeffries

Recorded: Sarm West Studios, 1993-1994

Fresh from his 1991 self-titled debut, Seal followed with another self-titled release. And true to form, it’s another stunning work, although it becomes clear that a musical maturation has taken place. Produced by ex-Buggles frontman Trevor Horn (Pet Shop Boys, ABC, Yes, Frankie Goes to Hollywood), Seal is far more enchanting than his debut. True, Seal is a bit too relaxed at times, but aside from that criticism, the record is lush with harmonies and over-the-top melodies. “Don’t Cry” flows with the luxuriant vibes of a hushed vocal and a bellowing string arrangement. Seal showcases his collaborative talent with “If I Could,” a duet featuring Canadian folkie Joni Mitchell. “Kiss from a Rose” and “Prayer for the Dying” established Seal as a household name after both became radio and television mainstays. The soul is there, hauntingly similar to singer Terence Trent D’Arby. But what’s so unique about Seal is his gift of transforming free-flowing songs into quick dancefloor tracks with a transcendent step into musical magic. His voice has a spell like that, and his second album reflects such skills. –AllMusic Review by MacKenzie Wilson

London singer/songwriter Seal certainly made a name for himself with his eponymous debut despite the comparison to fellow London mate, the raspy soul Terence Trent D’Arby. But Seal is more relaxed, and his craftsmanship is delicate and well defined. Lyrical depictions are light, songwriting is personal, and production credits are most impressive. With star-studded work from both Trevor Horn (Tina Turner, the Art of Noise, Rod Stewart) and Trevor Rabin (Yes, John Miles), Seal is surely a critical hit. Becoming a mainstream radio mainstay for the summer of 1991, the single “Crazy” carried heavy notoriety for Seal and instantly made him a household name. His collaborative effort with Adamski for “Killer” was a massive club hit thanks to its Hi-NRG strength, but house elements are showcased other album tracks such as “The Beginning.” Seal is not necessarily a dance innovator, but he makes for a select crossover artist with impeccable talent worthy of heavy acclamation and critical recognition. The general mood captured on his debut album is refreshing for the early-’90s mediocrity of post-hair metal and manufactured synth bands. His music was a major force throughout the decade and well into the new millennium. With Trevor Horn at his side, it’s undeniable. Together they go for exactly what Seal is looking for: the beauty, desire, and simplicity in creating a new sound. Seal is the face and Horn is the face behind it all. –AllMusic Review by MacKenzie Wilson

Maurice Ravel – Complete Piano Works – Walter Gieseking (1954/2012) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

For a pianist so associated with the French repertoire it’s somewhat perplexing to find that these Ravel recordings have been out of the domestic catalogue for so long. His Debussy set, currently on EMI CHS 5 658552, has always occupied a central place in the discography – as Bryce Morrison says in his notes Gieseking is to Debussy as Schnabel is to Beethoven or Rubinstein to Chopin – whereas his sovereignty in Ravel seems to have been very slightly eroded over the years. Which again, if true, is a matter for bewilderment. Whilst other pianists may sometimes bring greater clarity of articulation to Ravel or a greater elegance very few can command the myriad exquisite nuances that constantly illuminate the music in the way Gieseking invariably does.

Recorded: No.3 Studio, Abbey Road, London 1956/09/21-23

‘Gieseking achieved a paradox with these recordings: he devoted so much care to them that they seem absolutely artless. The pianist who mastered Beethoven’s epic edifices also had the modesty to efface himself in front of Mendelssohn’s. Not once does he say, “Look at me!” or “Now I’m going to show you how beautiful this is.” He simply plays the music without condescension or apology. However, this is not to say that his interpretations are simple! On the surface, Gieseking is depicting the jolly mischief of Shakespeare’s spirit, but on a lower level, Gieseking finds the darker colors that hint at the possibility, not necessarily realized, of a more maleficent disposition. And perhaps Mendelssohn’s miniatures are less emotionally complex but even here, Gieseking goes beyond their pretty surface and exposes their true Romanticism.’ –Raymond Tuttle, Classical Net
