Trumpeter Ralph Alessi makes his ECM debut as a bandleader with Baida, an album of atmospheric depth and melodic allure. To bring his compositions to life, Alessi assembled a powerhouse New York group consisting of pianist Jason Moran, bassist Drew Gress and drummer Nasheet Waits; the sessions were produced by multiple Grammy nominee and winner Manfred Eicher. As a vessel for the music’s seemingly bottomless lyricism, Alessi’s quartet plays with extraordinary finesse; however there is also a tensile strength emanating from the performances. (more…)

Macy Gray Is Back and Better Than Ever” – Elias Leight, Vogue

“She’s insanely underrated as a songwriter, a wordsmith whose wordplay is clever, often drolly dark, and full of both biting wit and irony-free vulnerability.”Crave

“Gray’s patented purr-and-growl vocals thrive in the intimate setting and the well-chosen repertoire” – Pablo Gorondi, Associated Press

“Sounding beautiful in the surroundings, you can hear the clicks on the bass strings, and the brushes on the side drum as it shuffles and dances sedately onwards. Over the top is ‘that’ voice, which was always (at least on the evidence of this) destined to be comfortable and (probably more importantly) authentic within Jazz. It’s so authentic, you can almost smell the tobacco stained late night club. Brilliant stuff.” – Jim, Backseat Mafia

“Gray is unafraid to take chances, and that alone makes her one of the most excited songwriters of her time.”PureVolume

“The new Macy Gray album Stripped features great music, great artistry, and great sound quality. I’ve never heard Macy sound anywhere near this good.” – Chris Connaker, Computer Audiophile

One of the most iconic and instantly recognizable voices in music history is back in a way you’ve never heard before. Macy Gray makes her Chesky Records debut with her new Jazz infused album, Stripped. Paired with an awe inspiring jazz ensemble that includes Ari Hoenig, Daryl Johns, Russell Malone, and Wallace Roney, Macy’s voice is given the space and freedom to truly shine. Antonio Vivaldi – The Four Seasons – Itzhak Perlman, London Philharmonic Orchestra (2015) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

Recorded: Abbey Road Studios, 18–20 May 1976

These days, who would ever imagine that the first commercial recording of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, one of the most popular classical works in the world, had been released as late as 1947? And how many of us would be able to name the soloist on this pioneering release (on the Concert Hall label)? It was in fact American violinist Louis Kaufman (1905–1994) who was the first to unearth, in its entirety, Il Cimento dell’Armonia e dell’Inventione, the set of twelve violin concertos of which the Four Seasons makes up the first four. Since Kaufman, countless other violinists have left their mark on this masterpiece of the Italian Baroque, developing its treasure trove of invention in line with the trends of the day. Itzhak Perlman himself has made two recordings of it, on both occasions directing from the violin. His first version, featured here, was made with the London Philharmonic in 1976, while the second, with the Israel Philharmonic, dates from seven years later (see volume 32).
Everything there is to say or write has already been said and written about these four concertos, whose main tunes we can all hum, so omnipresent are they in our everyday lives. And yet, generation after generation, virtuosos the world over continue to delve into the poetic and harmonic substance of these phenomenal works. Technically extremely demanding, they showcase not only a soloist’s musicianship, but also his or her taste — and that of the orchestra — with regard to colour and pulse. For rarely has a fully composed work allowed its performers so much freedom of expression. It’s worth remembering that Baroque composers often used a kind of shorthand, understood by contemporary instrumentalists, and expected performers to improvise and incorporate their own ornamentations. As always, it’s the actor that brings the printed page to life, whether in a Shakespeare play or a Vivaldi concerto.

In the two years since Tomasz Stanko’s much-loved Soul of Things, both the trumpeter and his young Polish band have continued to make their mark. Many miles of touring, on both sides of the Atlantic, have honed their already exceptional group understanding. Suspended Night builds upon the conceptual framework established by its predecessor – the bulk of the album is devoted to a series of haunting and soulful “Suspended Variations” – but the improvisational quotient is expanded, as all participants take more solo space, and more chances.

The Wild Tchoupitoulas is a 1976 album by the New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian tribe The Wild Tchoupitoulas. The album features the “call-and-response” style chants typical of Mardi Gras Indians. Vocals were provided by George Landry, as “Big Chief Jolly”, as well as other members of his Mardi Gras tribe. Instrumentation was provided in part by members of the New Orleans band The Meters. The album also notably features Landry’s nephews, the Neville Brothers, providing harmonies and some of the instrumentation. While not a commercial success, the effort was well received critically and the experience recording it encouraged the four Neville brothers to perform together for the first time as a group. Meaningful of the geographic location of New Orleans as a Caribbean city, “Meet de Boys on the Battlefront” is based on the melody and rhythm of Trinidadian calypso artist Lord Invader’s 1943 “Rum and Coca Cola” made famous in the U.S. by The Andrew Sisters in 1944. In 2012 the album was added to the U.S. Library of Congress’ National Registry, a designation of “cultural, artistic and historic importance to the nation’s aural legacy.”
