Recorded Live at the 1971 Berlin Jazz Festival, Swinging East is testimony to jazz’s ability to cross over international boundaries. Representing various Communist Bloc countries, the musicians were all-stars in their own lands, and three of the players, Croatia’s Bosco Petrovic, Polish violinist Michal Urbaniak, and Hungarian bassist Aladar Pege, gained international fame. Czech flutist Jiří Stivín and Polish violinist Zbigniew Seifert were originally billed for this unique concert but due to difficulties with the officials in their countries they couldn’t travel to Berlin.

Revered by his contemporaries as the “Orpheus of the Neva”, Dmitry Stepanovych Bortniansky is today regarded as one of the leading representatives of the classical period in Russia. He was born in 1751 in Glukhov (Hlukhiv), Ukraine, where he started vocal training at the age of six and was one year later, due to his unusual talent, accepted into the St. Petersburg Imperial Chapel Choir founded by Tsar Peter I. The young musician’s most influential teacher was Baldassare Galuppi, highly respected at the time, whom Catherine II in 1763 had brought to St. Petersburg as her court conductor. With him Bortniansky studied harpsichord and musical theory as well as perfecting his vocal technique. When Galuppi returned to Venice in 1768 the aspiring musician was allowed to accompany his teacher in order to continue and complete his studies. During his subsequent ten-year sojourn in Italy Bortniansky also wrote some “Italian” opere serie such as Cretone (1776), Alcide (1778) and Quinto Fabio (1778) which were premiered in Venice and Modena respectively.

The Zurich Ensemble, consisting of four award-winning Swiss soloists, make their paladino debut with two of their own spectacular transcriptions: Rimsky-Korsakov’s much-loved “Scheherazade” and “Five Oriental Melodies” by Bortkievicz. Especially their version of “Scheherazade” follows the old tradition of making orchestral music available for live performances in private homes and smaller venues as chamber music reductions.

Born Ruffians are a Canadian indie rock band formed in 2004, originally from Midland, Ontario, located near Georgian Bay. Their new album, produced by Richard Swift (Foxygen, The Shins), “Uncle, Duke & The Chief” is a record less concerned with what sounds hip than what feels good. In the Ruffians case that meant shedding some of their more arty influences (the Pixies, Talking Heads) and reconnecting with the sounds they first heard on their parents turntables as kids: Buddy Holly, The Everly Brothers, and pre-psychedelic Beatles. It s about going back to the deepest, most satisfying itch to scratch, says lead singer Luke Lalonde. And in doing so, the album takes you back to a time when the Ruffians sounded less like a band and more like a gang, raising a wild ruckus and speaking in telepathic tongues.

It would be short selling it to call PULP a collection of b-sides and rarities. Rather, it is a group of songs who have been patiently waiting their turn. “Happy Parasites” was at the top of the list when Born Ruffians entered the studio to record Uncle, Duke & the Chief in 2017 but it never made it into the sessions. “Husha” has been kicking around Youtube and various hard drives, a bootleg of sorts, for nearly ten years. “Heat Wave” is a head-bobbing, slow-burn banger that just needed a little more gestation time.

Norway’s avantgarde Black Metal pioneers and innovators BORKNAGAR arise at their most spirited and resplendend on their 11th studio album, “True North”. Succeeding 2016’s acclaimed “Winter Thrice” release and 25 years into the band’s existence, BORKNAGAR’s characteristically varied fusion of musical styles and inimitable layered vocal arrangements elevates the hour-long array of these 9 new tracks to a sonic spectacle of epic proportions and undisputable grandeur. “True North” was once again mixed by Jens Bogren / Fascination Street Studios (Opeth, Amon Amarth, Kreator) and is made available as limited first-pressing Digipak CD with 2 bonustracks and as Gatefold 2-LP on 180gr. vinyl.Intrepid black metallers Borknagar, in partnership with Century Media, mark their return with resplendent new album, True North. The Norwegians spent the better part of three years writing and rebuilding the lineup-Borknagar are now Oystein G. Brun (guitars), Simen “I.C.S. Vortex” Hestnas (bass/vocals), Lars A. Nedland (keyboards/vocals), Bjorn Dugstad Ronnow (drums), and Jostein Thomassen (guitars)-to make their 11th studio album a reality. The reasons are plenty but the main driver for space between and change within Borknagar’s repertoire and membership was calibration. Chief songman Brun needed to refocus his labor of love after the assiduous Winter Thrice album cycle. Indeed, that’s exactly what he’s done on True North. While Winter Thrice was a celebration of time spent and bonds made, True North is the vanguard forward, clear-sighted, refined, and full of power. Truly, there’s no holding back now, but with year 25-the band’s silver anniversary-approaching next year, small wonder that Brun and Borknagar are still with us. Fortuitous, or part of the plan all along.”Absolutely not,” Oystein G. Brun says [of the plan]. “Back in the day when I starting to play around with the ideas about the band I had no goal aside from making music I love myself. At that time, the whole concept of making money, doing big festivals and travelin .

Borge Fredriksson was an underexposed tenor saxophonist who was active in Sweden in the ’50s and ’60s. Although his complex, abstract style of post-bop didn’t bring him much commercial success during his lifetime, Fredriksson’s music continued to be discovered by Scandinavian jazz players long after his death. Fredriksson recorded only one album as a leader, 1966’s Intervall, and in the fall of 1968, he committed suicide at the age of 31. After Fredriksson’s death, sheet music of his compositions went to pianist Bobo Stenson, who had been working with Fredriksson since 1963 and was in the rhythm section of Fredriksson’s last group, along with bassist Palle Danielsson and drummer Fredrik Noren. In 1994, that rhythm section teamed up with tenor saxophonist Joakim Milder (born in 1965, Sweden) and recorded an album of Fredriksson’s compositions, Sister Maj’s Blouse, for the Mirrors label. Then, in 1997 and 1998, Milder joined forces with Stenson, Danielsson, and Noren once again and recorded Epilogue, another Mirrors release focusing on Fredriksson’s compositions.

Written over a period of 18 years, Rachmaninov’s sets of Préludes are a mirror and a record of his compositional development. With so rich a variety of character, colour, texture and mood, no two préludes are fully alike, and differentiation of tempo and register ensures that each prélude’s character is clearly defined. The first eleven pieces were conceived by Rachmaninov as a single cycle, and their full-hearted Romanticism contrasts with the significantly more angular, modernistic Op. 32. Whether evoking ballad or bell toll, the exotic or folk influences, the Préludes stand in the great tradition of works by Bach and Chopin written in all 24 major and minor keys.

Liszt’s Études d’exécution transcendante enshrine the spirit of High Romanticism, embodying extremes of expressive drama and technical virtuosity. His encyclopedic approach to technique is shown at its most dazzling in this cycle, heard here in the 1852 revision which Liszt himself declared ‘the only authentic one’. Integration of musical and technical elements is absolute, and the music’s narratives are supported by dramatic physicality, an orchestral richness of sonority, and an exceptional colouristic quality.

Boris Giltburg’s recordings for Naxos received numerous praises and awards. Recently he won Best Soloist Recording (20th/21st century) at the inaugural Opus Klassik Awards for his recording of Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Carlos Miguel Prieto, coupled with the Études-tableaux (8.573629). In May 2018 Naxos released his recording of the Third Piano Concerto and Corelli Variations with the same forces (8.573630), which has already garnered spectacular reviews including a Gramophone Editor’s Choice award.

Boris Giltburg’s Beethoven 32 project started as a personal exploration, driven by curiosity and his strong love of the Beethoven sonatas. Reflecting the introspection that came with his later years, the final three sonatas are among Beethoven’s most inspired compositions. In them he achieved ultimate freedom in moulding the sonata form, creating unique musical worlds suffused with transcendent beauty, dramatic tension and spirituality. These recordings display Giltburg’s customary poetic sensibility and technical finesse and convey the electric atmosphere of the live recording. The complete series will also be available in a special 9-disc boxed set in the autumn of 2021.

Boris Giltburg’s personal exploration of Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas reaches its penultimate volume. The Sonata No. 27, Op. 90 dates from 1814 and foreshadows Beethoven’s late period in its nuanced, expressive musical language. Sonata No. 28, Op. 101 is the first of Beethoven’s late period piano works, combining haunting poetic beauty with complex contrapuntal passages. Sonata No. 29, Op. 106, nicknamed ‘Hammerklavier’, is a monumental, symphonic work, pushing all boundaries of what had been achieved in the sonata form so far. Giltburg’s Beethoven 32 project has received critical praise for his playing that ‘allows every quality of the music to come across at full value’ .

The first six volumes (9.70307–9.70312) of Boris Giltburg’s traversal of Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas have been received with much acclaim: ‘[Giltburg brings] us closer to the spontaneous feel of a live performance… on this form Naxos’s cycle looks set to be something special’ (Malcolm Hayes, BBC Music Magazine, on Sonatas Nos. 4–7 / 9.70308). In this instalment the light and joyful Nos. 24 and 25 are bookended by two cornerstones of Beethoven’s piano sonatas: the powerfully dramatic Appassionata, and Les Adieux, the only programmatic sonata in Beethoven’s cycle.
