This 1959 album captured a famous date indeed, with Cannonball and brother Nat leading the way through This Here among other tunes. Throughout the decade when pop ruthlessly swept jazz aside, the Adderley brothers managed to stay in business with their distinctive “spirit of the south” – an optimistic, life-affirming style of modern jazz, bursting with colour yet steeped in the blues. The Liederhalle concert was the highlight of the Cannonball Adderley Quintet’s 1969 European tour.

From soul and blues (Sweet Emma, Oh Babe) to free-form contemporary (The Painted Desert) and lollypops cleverly combined with commercialism ((Work Song), the audience that night witnessed the sublime art of the quintet

Fascinated by the folklore of his native Bohemia, and gifted with inexhaustible melodic inventiveness, Antonin Dvorak went through several creative periods as he gradually broke out of the Classical mold; the last of these was deeply influenced by the years he spent in the United States. His kindness and optimism set him apart from the other great Romantics, darker and more tormented in character, and contributed to the unique charm and accessible character of his music, which have earned him justified popularity.

In my sound world, music is not created, but discovered. The environment is explored, the space is palpated, the details are observed, and the object is experienced from different angles so that, gradually, its physiognomy is exhibited. Like an alchemist who values, evaluates, and carefully calculates his materials to make them react, my intention is to create kaleidoscopes of sounds, effervescent objects, always alive, always changing, with unique and unrepeatable gestures, full of energy, and impenetrable density. (Jose-Luis Hurtado) This album combines solo piano works with ensemble pieces of various nature and gives the listener a chance to explore Hurtado’s artistic world, exquisitely performed by the renowned Talea Ensemble and the composer himself.

These three compositions by three Portuguese composers pay direct and indirect tribute to the music of Beethoven. The Piano Quintet by João Domingos Bomtempo was written in the style of the Viennese Classical mainstream even as Beethoven was changing its direction. The two works by César Viana and Jaime Reis both have distant roots in Beethoven but pay their homage in very different styles, one using relatively traditional language and the other more radical – as was Beethoven himself, of course.

Violence Unimagined. The title tells you everything you need to know about Cannibal Corpse’s fifteenth hellish opus. Comprised of eleven tracks, it is state of the art death metal played with passion and breathless precision, making for another flawless addition to what is inarguably one of the premier catalogues the genre has thrown up. “It really follows the path we’ve been going down for a few years now,” states bassist and founding member Alex Webster. “I think we approach the writing in a similar way most every time: each of us try to write the heaviest, most memorable songs we can. We want each song to have its own identifiable character. Showing my age, I like to say you can ‘drop the needle’ on any point of one of our albums and quickly tell which song you’re listening to.”

The world turns. Fashions change. Bands rise and fall. But you can’t stop the boogie. Fifty years after Canned Heat was founded by blues scholars Bob ‘The Bear’ Hite and Alan ‘Blind Owl’ Wilson in Topanga Canyon, California, the West Coast legends just keep rolling on down the road. “We’re all amazed and thankful that we’re still here,” explain the band, “living our dreams of making a living doing what we all love. Playing the blues, travelling the world and giving a taste of the boogie to audiences everywhere.”
