Greatest-hits albums are a traditional way of buying time for artists between albums. Peter Gabriel’s, entitled Shaking the Tree: Sixteen Golden Greats, arrived in December of 1990, as he was toiling away at the follow-up to his smash So, which was four years old at that point. As greatest-hits albums go, it’s pretty good, containing all the hits, plus an effective re-recording of “Here Comes the Flood” and a good new song in the form of the title track. While the sequencing may leave something to be desired — it is neither chronological, nor as supple as a good mix tape — it does contain nearly everything a casual fan could want (nothing from the second album, though; both “On the Air” or “D.I.Y.” would have been nice additions), making it an effective sampler.

Whilst Gabriel provided the title himself, the album was officially known as Peter Gabriel in other territories. As a result, it is known by fans as Security or Peter Gabriel 4. A German-language version of the album, entitled the Deutsches Album, was released later in 1982.

The album has been acclaimed as Gabriel’s artistic breakthrough as a solo artist and for establishing him as one of rock’s most ambitious, innovative musicians.[7] Gabriel also explored more overtly political material with two of his most famous singles, the anti-war song “Games Without Frontiers” (which became a number four hit and remains his joint highest charting single in the UK) and the anti-apartheid protest song “Biko”, which remembered the murdered activist Steve Biko. The album was remastered, along with most of Gabriel’s catalogue, in 2002.

This album is often referred to as Melt owing to its cover photograph by Hipgnosis.

Smooth Jazz, Guitar, Easy Listening | Features 2.0 Stereo and 5.1 multichannel surround sound

The smooth-jazz acoustic-guitar star gets his R&B groove on throughout many tracks on this beautifully recorded disc, and not just on the obvious tunes like the sneaky Isley Brothers cover, “Who’s That Lady” (with Kirk Whalum cooking on sax), and the old Temptations number, “Just My Imagination,” but also on the very funky “Turn It Out,” with sax man Euge Groove, and the Latin-tinged “Bueno Funk,” with Steve Cole on the horn. The rest of the album is about as dependable and complete an album White has put together since the promise he showed with Basia in the mid-’80s, which is to say smooth-jazz radio and fans are sure to be all over his thoughtful melodies and tasteful arrangements. Other guest stars include trumpeter Rick Braun, the ubiquitous keyboardist Jeff Lorber, and saxophonist Dave Koz, who warms the title ballad. More tracks sure to please fans of the very popular guitarist include “Pedro Blanco,” and “Baby Steps”.

Peter Ulrich – Enter The Mysterium (2005) MCH SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

Features 2.0 Stereo & 5.1 multichannel Surround sound

Although Peter Ulrich remains best known as an on-again, off-again member of Dead Can Dance (he supplied percussion on such classics as 1987’s Within the Realm of a Dying Sun), he is an accomplished composer in his own right, as evidenced by his sporadic solo recordings. Like the releases by his former band, Ulrich’s latest solo outing, 2005’s Enter the Mysterium, is an incredibly lush recording — chock-full of exotic instruments not usually associated with your typical rock bands (recorder, oboe, violin, etc.). Recorded at his home and also at a few British studios, Enter the Mysterium would serve as the perfect soundtrack to a European marketplace before the advent of electricity (think one of the early flashback scenes of Highlander, and you’re not far off). Written entirely by Ulrich (who also supplies the vocals and the majority of the instruments all by himself) and paying close attention to sonic detail, Mysterium is definitely a “headphones album,” as evidenced by such standouts as “The Scryer and the Shewstone,” “The Witchbottle of Suffolk,” and “Kakatak Tamai.” If you’re looking for soothing music that is 100 percent free of distorted Marshall amplifiers, Enter the Mysterium is recommended.

The album features heavyweights of Jamaican music and members of The Wailers and Peter Tosh’s backing band, Word, Sound and Power.

Grancia integrates traditional orchestral instruments including violin, viola, cello, harp, and woodwinds with a jazz / rock rhythm section and ethnic percussion. The music has been described as: elegant, sensual, cinematic, visual, richly arranged, multilayered and complex but very accessible. It incorporates formal structures but has lots of room for improvising and solos. The Grancia band includes 13 players from different musical disciplines – an unconventional, top shelf ensemble. Grancia was recorded with the whole band live in the studio, with no click track, no samples, and with overdubs kept to a minimum. It is an audiophile quality recording, captured with a combination of ultra-high quality digital and analog techniques. Grancia was conceived from its inception as a surround sound project and is presented as a hybrid SACD.

Their third recording was one of the group’s stronger outings, even if it confirms their status as folk popularizers rather than musical innovators. In particular, this record was essential to boosting the profile of Bob Dylan, including their huge hit cover of “Blowin’ in the Wind,” their Top Ten version of “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right,” and the bluesy “Quit Your Lowdown Ways,” which Dylan himself would not release in the ’60s (although his version finally came out on The Bootleg Series). “Stewball,” “All My Trials,” and “Tell It on the Mountain” were other highlights of their early repertoire, and the dramatic, strident, but inspirational “Very Last Day” is one of the best original tunes the group ever did.
