Don’t start up with all that “there’ve been no good Vaughan Williams recordings since Sir Adrian and Sir John died” stuff. Or course, Boult’s and Barbirolli’s recordings of Vaughan Williams’ symphonies are authoritative since they gave so many of the works their premieres. But authoritative does not mean definitive, it does not preclude other possibilities, and it surely does not preclude later conductors from giving equally convincing interpretations. As Richard Hickox has demonstrated again and again in his series of recordings of Vaughan Williams’ symphonies with the London Symphony Orchestra, his interpretations are just as convincing as Boult’s and Barbirolli’s.

French violinist Renaud Capuçon enjoys international renown as a soloist and chamber musician, is artistic director of several festivals, and is also known for his commitment to promoting and supporting younger artists and for commissioning compositions. Now he signed a contract with Deutsche Grammophon and the first album on the yellow label is not long in coming: a duo album with three of the most beautiful sonatas for violin and piano – accompanied by pianist Martha Argerich. The two are now a seasoned duo and have been playing on the stages of international festivals and concert halls for 20 years.
The concert heard here was recorded live in April 2022 at the Easter Festival in Aix-en-Provence. It was dedicated to American pianist Nicholas Angelich, a friend and colleague who had died just days before. The program includes three major works for violin and piano: Schumann’s Sonata No. 1, Op. 105, Beethoven’s Sonata No. 9, Op. 47 (“Kreutzer”), and Franck’s Sonata for Violin and Piano in A Major
“It’s a real live recording,” Capuçon says, “you rarely get something like this in the studio. Of course, it’s an honor for me to play these pieces with Martha, but at the same time it feels natural. She coaxes things out of me like no one else.”

Renaud Capuçon recognises Vivaldi’s Four Seasons as “a highlight of the violin repertoire”, but it has taken him some time to add it to his discography. “For years, I refused to play it,” he explains. “I’d heard it too much in the corridors of the Métro in Paris and as holding music on the phone. But once I’d accepted to play it, I was blown away by the power of the music … I realised that it’s famous because it’s amazing! It’s a masterpiece. I’ve now played it frequently with Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne and it feels fresh and new every time.” He has chosen to complement Vivaldi’s four concertos with two sparkling concertos composed in Paris some 40 years after Vivaldi’s death. They are by Chevalier de Saint-George (1745-1799), born in Guadeloupe of French and African descent, who became a prominent and influential figure in Paris. He has been described in the New York Times as a composer who holds a “truly unique place in Western classical music history”.

Vocalist Rebecca Jade has carried a journal in her backpack ever since she was a college athlete at UC Berkeley. She journaled her thoughts, feelings, reflections and experiences in the form of poetry and song lyrics. However, although she sang and came up with the album title “A Shade of Jade,” she didn’t consider herself to be a songwriter and didn’t have the confidence to put out original material, so she just toted the notebook around thinking “one day.” That day has arrived. Jade opened the pages of her journal to create ten R&B, jazz and pop songs that she wrote and co-produced with Carnell Harrell for “A Shade of Jade,” which drops October 14 from LadyJade Music.

Lefèvre began his musical career as a jazz pianist in a trio with Hubert Rostaing and Bobby Jaspar. He also played piano in the orchestra of his colleagues and later competitors Franck Pourcel and Paul Mauriat. he released his first album with Barclay in 1956. Only a little later he also recorded several albums with the singer Dalida. With a conservatory degree in piano and flute, Lefèvre became known for numerous film scores for films by Louis de Funès between 1964 and 1982. In addition, he made a name for himself as an orchestra conductor. He himself recorded mostly easy listening, but also instrumental versions of film themes and also modernized classical melodies.

Although some people might think that the likes of a rediscovered piece of music, one or two mentions of the instrument picked up here and there, a rather startling meeting between the writer and the most famous harpsichordist of the day, along with a metaphor in the guise of an epitaph written by a poetess friend are fairly slender foundations on which to build a programme entitled “A harpsichord for Marcel Proust”, this recording is not about a harpsichord that Marcel Proust had at his home or that belonged to him – it is a harpsichord for Marcel Proust. It is intended as a tribute by a harpsichordist of today to the man who wrote À la Recherche du Temps Perdu and who lived during an all-too-often overlooked period in the instrument’s history.

On this album entitled “Tutta sola”, violinist Rachel Podger plays solo repertoire from five European composers who all lived to celebrate new year’s eve in 1700. It is a wonderful baroque programme of selected solo violin pieces, preludes, dances and fugal movements. One person, at least with regards to the repertoire for Baroque violin, springs immediately to mind: Johann Sebastian Bach. But the german composer was not the only composer to experiment with “senza basso” – music without accompanying bass –, and neither was he the first. In addition to Johann Sebastian Bach, this recording features solo violin music from Johann Joseph Vilsmayr, Nicola Matteis Jr., Johann Paul von Westhoff, and Giuseppe Tartini.
