While most selections from Georg Philipp Telemann’s famous Tafelmusik could appropriately serve as inspirational musical backdrops to a formal banquet, there are other livelier, more vivacious ones that would auspiciously divert attention from such a setting in all the best of ways. Can you imagine for example not putting down your fork and deferring to the spirited second-movement R’ejouissance of the Overture-Suite in E minor, or to the final Allegro of the concerto in A major, or to the third-movement Allegresse or sixth-movement Badinage, both of which are featured in the Overture-Suite in B-flat major? As it turns out, the ever-practical Telemann understood this and titled his grand three-part production more as a means to lure would-be subscribers, irrespective of when and where the music was performed. After all, “Tafelmusik” is a far more appealing title than “a miscellany of concertos, suites, and sonatas”.

What I have done with this recording is to put three instrumental trio sonatas all in different styles in with these wonderful intimate chamber vocal works. Each group of three Deutsche arias is followed by an instrumental work, one in the traditional sonata da chiesa style, one in the more sonata da camera style (with dance movements) and one in the Italian Concerto style. There is nothing to criticize here and plenty to enjoy. As with previous releases in this series, the playing of Florilegium is the last word in graciousness and elegance, and the music itself is unfailingly inventive and charming. I’m thinking in particular of the quietly humorous “Distrait” movement from the Sixth Quartet, with its delicious echo effects at the ends of phrases, or the gorgeous Courante from the B-minor suite. The Fourth Quartet shares the same key, and its “Triste” also represents one of the disc’s highlights. In fact, three of the four works here feature minor keys, the exception being the A major quartet No. 5, with its opening Vivement prelude and two sections marked “Gai” (though one of them is only “un peu”). Also in keeping with previous releases, the sonics are absolutely state-of-the-art, whether in stereo or incredibly life-like 5.0 multichannel formats. It just doesn’t get any better.

Frederick the Great himself is known to have composed one hundred and twenty-one flute sonatas, four flute concertos, a symphony, various arias and an overture. These works were written in the mixed style advocated by Quantz in an attempt to blend Italian music of the senses with French music of reason.

The birth of this cd is due to the desire of Florian Wielgosik, solo tuba of the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, to make the tuba better known. Indeed, in most people’s minds, this instrument occupies a role reduced either to the brass band or to limited interventions within the framework of a symphony orchestra. Florian Wielgosik therefore wanted to give an impression, through a choice of very diverse composers and works (German, Polish, Argentinean, French), of some of the music in which the tuba can express itself differently from that of the Solo tuba, the one in front, but more as a participant in chamber music, more intimate and mixed with the others in a humble and fertile exchange. All this is found in this testimony he offers us.

It is a rare stroke of luck when a completely new piece of music triggers the spontaneous impression that one has known it for decades. This is undoubtedly true of Alternate Reality, the third album by the Swiss band Woodoism, based on trombonist Florian Weiss. The ten tracks, recorded with trombone, saxophone, double bass and drums – and with flute and glockenspiel at selected moments – seem as familiar as a warm coat in a snowstorm. Everything is brand new and exciting, and yet instantly becomes music that’s deeply ingrained in the body.

In his second ECM appearance (following a critically-acclaimed duo recording with Markus Stockhausen) pianist Florian Weber leads a strong cast through a programme of his compositions and sketches. Whether paying tribute to mentor Lee Konitz on “Honestlee”, impressionistically conveying the glittering “Melody of a Waterfall” or generating impactful drama out of fragments of sound on “Butterfly Effect”, Weber continually draws fresh responses from his players. “I wanted this project to be as open as possible”, he says. “It’s the idea of exploration that is important here, and the differences between the players.” The strong, grounded bass of Linda May Han Oh contrasts strikingly with Nasheet Waits’s fleet, fluid drumming, setting up new contexts for Ralph Alessi’s elegantly inventive trumpet and the leader’s highly creative piano playing. Lucent Waters was recorded at Studios La Buissonne in the South of France in September 2017, and produced by Manfred Eicher.

The first true complete recording of Robert Schumann’s works for piano solo on 17 albums (in 15 volumes), played by Florian Uhlig, seeks for the first time to offer imaginative compilations on album (e.g. “Robert Schumann and the Sonata”, “The Young Piano Virtuoso”, “Schumann in Vienna”, “Schumann and Counterpoint”, “Variations”) containing all original works for pianoforte written between 1830 (Abegg Variations op. 1) and 1854 (Ghost Variations) according to the newest critical editions and/or first editions. Several of these albums include premiere recordings. The booklets by Joachim Draheim, who discovered and/or edited a number of the works, shed light on the biographical and musicological background to the works thus coupled.

Volume 14 is dedicated to a special aspect – the form of variation with which Schumann has dealt intensively throughout his life and which was a central genre, especially of piano music, in the 19th century.
