Italian bass Ferruccio Furlanetto is one of the most sought-after interpreters of French, Italian and Russian repertoire. Here he joins Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky orchestra for a sumptuous recording of Massenet’s final great opera. Gergiev is no stranger to conducting Massenet, having recorded an outstanding performance of ‘Hérodiade’ in 1995 with Renée Fleming and Placido Domingo.

‘Don Quichotte’, Massenet’s comédie-héroïque, is a tale of heroism, adventure and unrequited love. The plot relates only indirectly to the great novel by Miguel de Cervantes and more likely refers to the play Le chevalier de la longue figure, by the poet Jacques Le Lorrain. Massenet, nearing the end of his career, probably identified with the character of Don Quichotte, and fell in love with the mezzo-soprano Lucy Arbell, who played Dulcinée in the first performance of the work.

Praised for his vast range, thundering vocal power, and exceptional acting ability, Ferruccio Furlanetto has performed at the world’s leading opera houses, including La Scala, the Royal Opera House, the New York Metropolitan Opera and the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg. His 2011-12 season is dominated by performances of ‘Boris Godunov’ with the Chicago Lyric Opera, Vienna Staatsoper and the Teatro Massimo (Palermo). Furlanetto will also sing Méphistophélès in Gounod’s ‘Faust’, Don Basilio in ‘Il Barbiere di Siviglia’ and Silva in ‘Ernani’ at the Met.

Mezzo-soprano Anna Kiknadze is a principal soloist of the Mariinsky Theatre, St Petersburg. Highlights of her early career include being a finalist at the 2001 Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, 2002 Placido Domingo Operalia Competition in Paris and the International Rimsky-Korsakov Competition in St. Petersburg.

45 years ago, Cat Stevens song “Peace Train” entered the stage, revealing the feel of the early seventies, which had been heavily affected by the anti-war movement against the threats of the ongoing Vietnam war as well as by the hippie culture with their ideals of love and peace. Nowadays, this seems to be a perished time. But, of course, the song is as relevant today as it has ever been. German pianist and composer Gerd Baier, who refers to Stevens song as an “imprint of my personal music history”, and who authors all songs of the new album “Nevertheless” by his trio formation gerdband aims for a similar call. Triggered by the terror attacks in the European capitals of Paris and Brussels in 2015 and 2016, killing more than hundred innocent people, Baier’s motivation for the album “Nevertheless” rests upon his reflections about the present-day status of our communities. An increasing number of wars, urging people to flee out of their countries, seems to enhance racism and xenophobia in the shadow of a constantly growing right-wing populism. All this, Baier says, adds up to a growing fragility of peace and freedom. It was in 1967, when Cat Stevens came up with the lyrics of “Peace Train”, including the phrases: “Oh, I’ve been smilin’ lately / Dreamin’ about the world as one / And I believe it could be / Some day it’s going to come.” It’s today, that Gerd Baier labels his album with the subtitle: “This album stand for humanity, peace and freedom.” According to him, we should retain companionship and tolerance, committing us to more humanity.

It is known that, as Adolph Deutsch said, good music cannot save a bad movie but it can make it more presentable. And it is known that the cinema is made up of a set of elements (script, interpretation, direction, costumes, music, sound …) that form a whole but that in few cases have sidereal distances in quality. And if, as is the case at hand, a composer has done his job well, he must not bear the guilt of the calamities of the film as a whole, although, of course, it is assumed that the defects of others weighed his or her own, while a movie is the sum of everything and music is part of that whole, from which it cannot be subtracted.

EMI’s prestigious ‘Great Recordings of the Century’ series has featured a host of celebrated conductors, singers and instrumental virtuosi. Why, you may think, should an issue pay tribute to a “mere” accompanist? However, as I pointed out recently when comparing two recordings by Hans Hotter of Schubert’s Winterreise, a perceptive accompanist can make all the difference. In that instance, the perspicacious accompanist whose contribution to one of the two versions made it a clear winner, was Gerald Moore, the musician celebrated here.

This new outing from sought-after drummer/composer Gerald Cleaver is a bottomless well of energy and robustness. Five rhythmically-charged self-penned tunes (four of them retrieved from his 2007 album Detroit, which featured exactly the same group as here) were performed live at Firehouse 12. The spirited performance brainstormed a blend of novelty and familiarity that sparkles with gut-punch improvised moments. Moreover, this is a swinging record where his razor-sharp drumming skills solidifies a rhythm section that also includes pianist Ben Waltzer and bassist Chris Lightcap. They use their rhythm knowledge and charismatic accompaniment to support the melodic journeys of trumpeter Jeremy Pelt and saxophonists J.D. Allen and Andrew Bishop, a powerful frontline.

Clayton is recognized by peers and public alike to hungrily seek opportunities which allow for creative musical exchanges with other artists. And he understands that any successful artistic venture requires listening as much as expressing, open-mindedness as well as respect for the input of others. It requires leadership and, most importantly, demands a shared love for the art form and each other. Clayton understands that these are the conditions that create a forum for something truly magical to emerge.

Pianist Gerald Clayton is set to release his Blue Note Records debut Happening: Live at the Village Vanguard out July 10. Recorded at the legendary NYC jazz club with a quintet of longtime collaborators—Logan Richardson on alto saxophone, Walter Smith III on tenor saxophone, Joe Sanders on bass, and Marcus Gilmore on drums—Happening spotlights Clayton’s layered identity as a leader. The quintet co-navigates four of Clayton’s original compositions including “A Light” and “Rejuvenation Agenda,” as well as Duke Ellington’s “Take the Coltrane,” while Clayton pares down to a trio for Bud Powell’s “Celia” and the standard “Body and Soul.”

“I called it Happening to highlight the fact that this music is living, that we have a whole lot of happenings throughout the year, and performances at the Village Vanguard are some of the most special of those happenings. It’s such a special, sacred place for the music. You really can feel the presence of what’s occurred in the room.”

To Clayton, the album’s poised impact has shifted in light of the global pandemic. “The idea of having a recording of a live concert takes on a new meaning now that we’re unable to actually gather anymore” he says. “I would hope that, when we do return to some kind of normalcy, people are more inspired than ever to recognize that this music is happening, that it’s a living art form. We need to actually go to those shows. We need to be in those rooms and be part of that experience. I hope this album can offer people a little bit of an escape from this isolation, that it transports them back to the time when we were all able to congregate and celebrate our shared love.”

The iconic saxman who many of us have now come to affectionately know as simply “G,” Gerald Albright, explodes on the scene again with another example of his seemingly infinite musicality with a new release simply called G, his first on his new independent label. An album that, along with good modern day funk and jazz, also tosses in that old school flavor that hearkens back to his deep jazz & R&B roots with breathing, soulful, swelling sax solos. It’s also another demonstration of his superior bass skills (so superior that I would comfortably place him among the best).
