Coleman Hawkins was the first important tenor saxophonist and he remains one of the greatest of all time. A consistently modern improviser whose knowledge of chords and harmonies was encyclopedic, Hawkins had a 40-year prime (1925-1965) during which he could hold his own with any competitor.

Orchester Erwin Lehn – Color in Jazz (1974/2015) [Official Digital Download 24bit/88,2kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/88,2 kHz | Time – 42:23 minutes | 829 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © MPS

From 1951-92 Erwin Lehn conducted one of Germany’s leading swing big bands, the Radio Stuttgart Dance Orchestra. The band included top names from the international jazz scene, including American trombonists Bob Burgess (Stan Kenton and Woody Herman bands) and Donald Beightol (Oliver Nelson), Swedish trumpeter Rolf Ericson (Duke Ellington, Buddy Rich Sextet), German Saxophonist Joki Freund (Albert Mangelsdorff, Hans Koller), and Dutch trumpet great Ack Van Rooyen. Composed by either band saxophonist Bernd Rabe or Lehn, the vibrant pieces cover a wide range of contemporary jazz. On Alfredo, bop horn lines, Van Rooyen’s sweet singing solo, along with Freund’s crisp improv stand out. Burgess highlights the trombonist’s layered depth, from ballad to rock to swing and back, whereas Atlantik 2 displays brassy, sophisticated chording, Van Rooyen’s trumpet in all its muted elegance, and hip sax and piano solos. Rabe’s moody sax opens El Cuervo Nuovo before the piece moves into a mix of Latin and swing with Van Rooyen’s majestic trumpet soaring above the band. Lift Up features Rabe on alto and Ericson’s blistering trumpet, and the aptly named Color may be portrayed as the album’s highlight. It offers a kaleidoscope of moods and hues, with just about everyone contributing to the composition’s overall texture. Funf Zu Vier (Five to Four) plays around with 4/4 and 5/4 time signatures. Despite having been one of the best and most popular big bands in Germany, Lehn’s Orchestra made surprisingly few records, especially in such a pure jazz setting. This 1974 album is possibly their best, and as such is a classic of the genre.

“The three of us clicked from the first moment. I got very inspired to write new music for this band, and explore new directions”, sagt Klein.

“I feel that we managed to give each song it’s unique atmosphere and distinct character. And since we toured a lot prior to the recording, our improvisations in the studio came out really fearless and daring. We were listening hard, and embracing mystery and surprise.”, so Omer Klein über dieses Album.

Israeli-French pianist Yonathan Avishai has made important contributions to the music of Avishai Cohen, as documented on Into The Silence and Cross My Palm With Silver. In parallel, over the last five years, he has been developing his own project with the trio heard here, with Paris-based Israeli bassist Yoni Zelnik and Donald Kontomanou, French drummer of Guinean and Greek heritage. Sometimes known as the Modern Times Trio, its programme here opens with Duke Ellington’s “Mood Indigo”: “Ellington is still a thoroughly modern pianist and composer,” Yonathan Avishai muses. In the original pieces that follow, Avishai makes references to a broad range of musics and experiences. “Les pianos de Brazzaville” recalls his journeys to the Republic of the Congo.

Clever and entertaining, My Name is Yakir offers a diverse potpourri of jazz standards and original compositions performed by pianist Yakir Arbib. The music contrasts standards from the Dixieland, swing, bebop and hard bop eras with five originals that mix classical idioms with loose jazz structures. Arbib certainly has talent and his technical dexterity permits him to play within these various jazz styles and cross between them with ease.

Playing The Room bears testimony to the long musical friendship of Avishai Cohen and Yonathan Avishai. They began to explore jazz as teenagers in Tel Aviv, and have continued to play together over many years, with Yonathan making important contributions to Avishai’s group albums Into The Silence and Cross My Palm With Silver on ECM.

Their first duo album begins with music composed by the trumpeter and by the pianist and concludes with a touching interpretation of Israeli composer Alexander Argov’s cradle song “Shir Eres”. Along the way, Avishai and Yonathan improvise – freely, playfully, soulfully – on themes from jazz tradition. And, as the album titles implies, they also invite the recording space, the Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI in Lugano, to be part of the sound, making full use of its resonant acoustic properties in a performance with the intimacy and focus of chamber music.

Recorded in September 2018, and produced by Manfred Eicher, Playing The Room is available as both audiophile vinyl album and compact disc.

VIdar Johansen has been one of the finest composers and arrangers in Norwegian jazz since he broke into the jazz scene while still in his teens as a tenor sax player (with an occasional stint at the soprano and the bass clarinet). He has never promoted himself much, but often been part of larger musical unities with other people at the head. And at these settings he has always seized the opportunity to contribute creatively. His creativity also extends to the titles of his songs, which are often quite mysterious and evocative. With this recording, some of the hidden gems of Norwegian jazz composition have come to the surface, songs that have been lost in stacks of handwritten manuscript paper for decades, kept alive only in the memory of a few affectionados. So where does all this leave us? It certainly leaves us with a legacy of great music, and a continuing story of great sound pouring out of Vidar´s saxophones and great ideas forming on his manuscript paper. And it leaves us, his fellow players, with thankfulness for being allowed to contribute to that same magnificent sound! Vidar´s true greatness lies in his personality, the originality of his thoughts and the sheer beauty and warmth of his playing. It is instantly recognisable: the big tone, the phrasing, the necessity of communicating with the audience, the earnestness, crazyness, humor and humanity. And likewise his compositions show a deep connection with the great names of the jazz history: Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, and a lot of others. Vidar is also a fan of 20th century classical music, and has composed several pieces for classical musicians. Vidar Johansen – saxophone, Magnus Aannestad Oseth – trumpet, Rune Klakegg – piano Tine Asmundsen – upright bass, Terje Engen – drums

Born on March 10, 1984 to a guitarist father and an artist mother, Armel Dupas grew up in an environment particularly conducive to art and music.

Lulled from an early age by the records of Miles Davis or Duke Ellington, it was at the age of 5 that he learned his first piano chords with his cousin as well as his first songs thanks to his brother and his father. Around the age of 12, he met the Nantes jazz pianist Jean-Marie Bellec (creator of the Jazz Department of the Conservatoire de Nantes), whom he considered his mentor Initially inspired by artists such as Wes Montgomery, Eddy Louiss or Stan Getz, he listened as a teenager to Bill Evans or Keith Jarrett

After a first cycle of studies in economics at the University of Nantes, Armel Dupas finally turned to music in 2004. From 2005 to 2009, he was a student of the jazz and improvised music class of the Conservatoire National supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris (CNSMDP)

or FLAC(converted with foobar2000 to tracks) 24bit/96 kHz | Front/Rear Covers+ | 1,14 GB

Art Blakey led many editions of his Jazz Messengers over more than three decades, but a strong argument can be made that the Messengers of his Riverside period constituted his strongest unit. With Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, and Curtis Fuller in the front line, with Cedar Walton and Reggie Workman as Blakey’s rhythm-section mates, its combination of musicianship and sheer swinging force has rarely been equaled in a small band. Caravan was the first of Blakey’s Riverside albums and endures as a living monument to his nonpareil drumming and leadership. His solo on the title tune is one of the finest recorded examples of Blakey’s unique melding of precision and power. Hubbard and Shorter contributed memorable compositions and, with Fuller and Walton, some of the greatest soloing of the 1960s. Caravan rolls again in the full color and range of SACD sound.
