‘Can We Do Tomorrow Another Day?’ is the debut project from Paul Simonon, of The Clash, Gorillaz and The Good, The Bad and The Queen; and Galen Ayers, singer-songwriter who amongst other artistic projects released the rightly acclaimed solo album ‘Monument’. The roots of the album began in lockdown as Simonon relocated to a remote Mallorcan fishing village, where he spent his time, painting, and writing songs. Over an 18-month period he worked with local musicians, playing and busking in the streets of Palma. When he finally headed back to London, he further developed his ideas with his friend Ayers, with both bonding over a shared love of sparse, evocative song-writing. What emerged is a collection of ten uplifting songs which collectively present a snapshot of pan-European music culture. Led by Ayers’ gorgeous voice as she duets playfully with Simonon, both bilingually singing in English and Spanish, the resulting album journeys across the continent, influenced by French chansons, Spanish pop and English sea shanties; evoking scenes stretching from Edgware Road to Hydra Island; and painting pictures of everything from elegant Parisian cafes to drunken tourists in Magaluf and the ghosttown chill of an out-of-season holiday destination. ‘Can We Do Tomorrow Another Day?’ features an array of top tier talent. Produced by the legendary Tony Visconti (David Bowie, T-Rex, Sparks) with a band made up of Simon Tong (The Verve, The Good, The Bad and The Queen), Sebastian Rochford (Polar Bear, David Byrne, Patti Smith) and Dan Donovan (Big Audio Dynamite), with Damon Albarn playing on melodica on a number of tracks.

The Manic Street Preachers will reissue their second album Gold Against The Soul in June this year.
The 1993 album features the singles ‘From Despair To Where’, ‘La Tristesse Durera (Scream to a Sigh)’ and ‘Roses in the Hospital’. This was the band’s second album and while the Manics have reissued The Holy Bible and Everything Must Go TWICE in the last 20 years, they’ve totally ignored Gold Against The Soul.
This changes soon and a two-CD deluxe edition features a remastered version of the album on CD 1 with non-album/B-sides appended to this disc (plus a live recording of The Clash song ‘What’s My Name’). The second CD features 11 previously unreleased demos, some remixes and a live track.

Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet inspired many composers from Benda to Prokofiev through Berlioz, Gounod or Tchaikowsky and it is always a challenge for a musician to approach such a subject so full of history. With Star-Cross’d Lovers, French composer David Chalmin gives a new look at Shakespeare’s drama : a contemporary ballet choreographed by Yaman Okur, written for two pianos, electric guitar, electronics and drums. The musical dramaturgy is based on tension and resolution, violence and harmony, brutality and poetry, which correspond to the two antagonist themes of hatred and love. These contrasts enable a vast range of choreographic possibilities boosted by the energy exchanges between the seven breakdancers and the four musicians. The piece is tinged with minimalism, rock and electronics but also includes references to art music or ethnic music. It finds its unity in a cleverly combination of tradition and experimentalism. The clashes between the two rival gangs take place in a dark, oppressive and threatening musical world where tension and danger are constant. It could describe a sordid urban environment, perhaps that of a soulless suburb of a big city. The tragic end of the work is prefigured in the first prologue by an evolving melodic theme played by the pianos in the lower register that could be a modern version of a Wagnerian leitmotiv of curse or fate. Electronic roars and buzzes, howlings of electric guitar, aggressive hammerings of pianos, cold polyrhythmic combining motoric style, obssesive rave music but also African and Latino influences, contribute to this dystopian vision of the drama. The musical universe of the two famous lovers, which often tintinnabulates in the high register of the pianos, is instead full of delicacy and sweetness. David Chalmin gives his music a special charm drawing his inspiration from Ravelian limpidness, Schubertian lyricism and Chopinian poetry but also from styles close to jazz and pop music. David Chalmin’s 30-minute score was composed for Katia and Marielle Labèque. It was premiered at the Philharmonie de Paris in May 2015. Since then, it has been performed in Luzern, Dortmund, Montpellier Festival, Bordeaux, Paris (Théâtre du Châtelet), Napoli Festival, etc.

Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine were synonymous with the indie punk scene in the early ’90s with a run of top ten singles and albums. They sold out multiple venues time after time playing to a fiercely loyal fanbase.
30 Something was Carter’s second album. Originally released in February 1991, it charted at number 8 in the UK spawning the singles “Anytime Anyplace Anywhere” and “Bloodsport For All”. With nods to The Clash and Bowie, the album contained the band’s trademark lyrical puns and snarling punk vocals juxtaposing with harmonisng guitars. The album received 10/10 from NME upon release and ranked as number 8 on their albums of the year list for 1991.

Release from the former Stone Roses vocalist. Ripples is Brown’s first solo album in 10 years and serves as the long-awaited follow-up to 2009’s My Way. Brown self-produced and wrote a majority of Ripples, as well as created the artwork and played most of the instruments heard throughout the record. His sons have co-writing credits on three songs and provided additional instrumental contributions. Ripples was recorded in Liverpool and “enhanced” at London’s Abbey Road Studios before undergoing mixing by longtime collaborator Steve Fitzmaurice. Includes the single “First World Problems”.

If you’re from Australia and you want to play tough, straightforward punk-leaning rock with a lot of energy, you have your choice of some pretty impressive role models, such as the Celibate Rifles, the Saints, and especially Radio Birdman, arguably the Antipodes greatest contribution to punk. Civic are a fierce rock & roll band from Melbourne who clearly aspire to this great tradition, and for their second album, 2023’s Taken by Force, they’ve gone straight to the source in pursuit of a mentor: in this case, Radio Birdman vocalist Rob Younger, who produced the LP. While Younger’s presence doubtless helped bring out the Birdman-isms in this music, Civic clearly couldn’t pull this off if they didn’t have the goods, and the good news is they’ve done their homework and kick out the jams with admirable strength. As songwriters, Civic lack something in the way of original vision, and anyone who owns a copy of Do the Pop! will recognize the melodic frameworks of most of these tracks (though on “Born in the Heat” they seem to be borrowing from the Clash, which makes for some variety). That said, if you want to hear a band that knows how to crank out some high-energy, no-frills rock, Taken by Force is for you. Jim McCullough has a vocal sneer worthy of Mark Arm (if not Iggy Pop), guitarists Lewis Hodgson and Jackson Harry tear into the songs with just the right degree of finesse (and can pull off solid solos when called upon), and bassist Roland Hlavka and drummer Matt Blach know how to push this monster into fifth gear. This music breaks no new ground, but in both concept and execution, Taken By Force does right by its inspirations and is a welcome reminder of just how good some down and dirty old-school proto-punk can feel. Sure, you’ve heard this sort of thing before, but when it’s served up with this kind of quality and commitment, there’s lots to be said for giving it another spin.
