“Sanne Graulund is one of the few Danish jazz singers who can accompany herself on the piano with her own compositions. It is not commonplace on the Danish music scene and in november Sanne releases the album CONTEXT. An album that will really take life with her heart’s blood; the piano-driven jazz songs that you can both immerse and forget yourself in. The album will consist of both own compositions and adapted standards in the tradition from Nina Simone to Carly Simon and Ella Fitzgerald to Diana Krall. You can hear interpretations of Robyn’s” Dancing On My own”, Bowie’s 5:15 and Radioheads’s”no surprises”. In addition, classics in a dimmed, dusty and cinematic universe. The album is produced by Carsten Skov, and Jan Harbeck is a guest soloist on several tracks”.

Like George Gershwin and Cole Porter, the music of Jimmy McHugh is an essential part of the American popular song canon, and jazz musicians have always been the canon’s greatest interpreters. On this CD, New Orleans-born trumpeter Terence Blanchard delivers fresh renditions of McHugh’s songs with four of the brightest singers on the scene. The cool Canadian chanteuse Diana Krall tickles the title track with her Shirley Horn-like vocals and pianisms, while Jane Monheit graces the ballad “Too Young to Go Steady” and the bouncy “I Can’t Give You Anything but Love” with her quiet-storm phrasing. Dianne Reeves’s powerful voice imbues “I Can’t Believe You’re in Love with Me” and the midtempo “Can’t Get Out of This Mood” with new emotional colors. Cassandra Wilson’s down-South delivery transforms “Don’t Blame Me” and “Sunny Side of the Street” into slow-drag and tango-tinged numbers. Blanchard’s instrumental versions of “You’re a Sweetheart” and “Lost in a Fog,” with the tenor saxophonist Brice Winston, are lyrical in their own jazzy ways.

Tony Bennett’s latter-day albums tend to have themes, and this one has two, as indicated by its double-barreled title: It is both a duets album and a blues album. The duet partners include ten singers who range from his recent touring partners Diana Krall and k.d. lang to fellow veterans Ray Charles, B.B. King, and Kay Starr, and younger, but still mature pop stars Stevie Wonder, Bonnie Raitt, and Billy Joel.

Released in conjunction with an NBC-TV special, 2016’s effusively delivered concert album Tony Bennett Celebrates 90 finds vocalist Tony Bennett marking his 90th birthday with an all-star concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. A lavish event, the concert showcased Bennett performing a handful of his most famous songs, with the legendary singer joined by a bevy of musical guests including Andrea Bocelli, Michael Bublé, Lady Gaga, k.d. lang, Kevin Spacey, Stevie Wonder, and many others. Generally speaking, the album is front-loaded with the guest performances and largely consists of each artist doing a rendition of a popular standard Bennett performed and/or recorded at one point or another. Oddly, despite all the guest artists on hand and in light of Bennett’s own tradition of doing duet albums, the concert is noticeably bereft of such pairings save for a particularly poignant duet between Bennett and Billy Joel on Joel’s “New York State of Mind.” Instead, we get Bocelli doing “Ave Maria,” lang doing “A Kiss to Build a Dream On,” Bublé doing “The Good Life,” and more. We also get Elton John delivering a thematically fitting version of his own classic “Can You Feel the Love Tonight.” Particularly engaging are Lady Gaga’s exuberant renditions of “The Lady Is a Tramp” and “La Vie en Rose.” Given her history as a duet partner with Bennett (much like lang), Gaga displays her growing talent as a traditional pop vocalist and proves to be one of the highlights of the evening. Despite the high caliber of the guest performances, the real focus of the concert is saved for the latter half when Bennett himself takes the stage. Although well past the age that most of his contemporaries retired, Bennett remains a magnetic stage performer with a voice that’s as robust and nuanced as in his prime — and perhaps even more full of character. Every time Bennett sings, he delivers a veritable master class on how to sing a jazz standard, and this performance is no exception. Here, we get a handful of some of his best-known numbers, including “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” “The Best Is Yet to Come,” and more. Ultimately, Tony Bennett Celebrates 90 is a joyful birthday fete to Bennett and a heartfelt tribute to his illustrious career.

Sanitize Tom Waits’s vocal cords, take some of the rasp out of Dr. John’s, put some muscle into Bobby Caldwell’s, combine them and you’ll have an approximation of the quality of Steve Tyrell’s voice. Like his popular 1999 debut, “A New Standard”, this is a meticulously recorded album featuring the great American songbook and some of the best jazz soloists alive, including trumpeter Clark Terry, harmonica player Toots Thielemans, and singer Jane Monheit, who plays Lucille Ball and Betty Carter against Tyrell’s Red Skelton and Ray Charles on the classic duet “Baby It’s Cold Outside”. Tyrell complements each of his partners with the kind of empathy that makes them shine as bright as his irresistible voice. Plas Johnson’s saxophone take on “That Old Feeling,” for instance, is highly reminiscent of the symbiotic musical partnership that Lester Young created with Billie Holiday more than half a century ago. Also like his first record, it is the creative arrangements of guitarist Bob Mann and pianist Joe Sample that make these 16 tracks work so well.

Not since Billie Holiday has there been a vocalist who so completely transforms a song into her own. On It’s Like This, eclectic folkie Rickie Lee Jones envelops standards, showtunes, ’70s soul, and even slick jazz-rock, interpreting them with her familiar childlike, breathy shouts. In a very similar vein as 1991’s Pop Pop, Jones pulls together a collection of diverse songs from throughout the 20th century and gives them a sparse, fragile spin, kind of like Diana Krall and Björk sharing coffee at an all-night diner.

Ray Charles – Genius Loves Company (2004) MCH SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

Genius Loves Company is the last studio album Ray Charles completed before his death in June 2004. Prior to this, the last studio album he released was Strong Love Affair in 1996, which was a stab at modern pop, filled with new songs and given an adult contemporary sheen. It was not one of his most distinctive efforts, even when judged against his latter-day albums, and it disappeared not long after its release. Charles left Warner and, years later, signed with Concord, who released Genius Loves Company, which had a decidedly different approach than the all-modern Strong Love Affair. As the title acknowledges with a wink, this is a duets album, which may be a little commonplace as far as latter-day superstar albums go but is still a step up from his previous studio album since it puts Ray Charles in a comfortable, relaxed situation that plays to his strengths. Instead of trying to put Charles in a modern setting, producers John Burk and Phil Ramone (Burk helmed seven of the album’s tracks, Ramone is responsible for the other five, and their work fits together seamlessly) go for a clean retro setting with a few guitars, synths, and a rhythm section, occasionally dressing it with an orchestra or some strings. In other words, apart from the glistening production, it’s not far removed from any of Charles’ crossover records from the ’60s, and he’s also given a strong set of songs, largely familiar pop classics, from “Fever” and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” to “Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word” and “Crazy Love.” His duet partners are fairly predictable — classy newcomers like Norah Jones and Diana Krall, but also old stalwarts like Elton John, B.B. King, Johnny Mathis, James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, and the ubiquitous Willie Nelson (who has never sounded older than he does here on “It Was a Very Good Year”) — but they’re also reliable, never overshadowing Ray yet never shrinking in his shadow either; in short, it sounds more like a real duets album than most superstar duet records. The end result is modest, friendly, laid-back, and pleasing, one that remains faithful to Charles’ music while sounding relatively fresh. It may not be weighty enough to be a career-capping masterpiece, but it’s sweet enough to be an appropriate final album — which is far more than can be said of Strong Love Affair, or any of the other albums he cut in the ’80s or ’90s for that matter.
