OLYMPIANS – the Grammy Award-winning composer’s new album highlights the nine original compositions Mendoza wrote during his 27-year collaboration with the Metropole Orchestra. Special guest appearances include Dianne Reeves, who sings Mendoza’s lively and Brazilian-tinged song Esperanto with lyrics by Kurt Elling, and House of Reflections, interpreted by Cecile Mclorin-Salvant, with lyrics by legendary British singer/songwriter Norma Winstone. Tenor saxophonist Chris Potter is featured on an energetic version of Barcelona. The recording also features an impressive solo by saxophonist David Binney and more great moments from Weather Report alumnus Alex Acuña on drums. The premiere of Mendoza’s Bright Lights and Jubiliations was recorded live in Amsterdam in 2021, Mendoza’s first performance in Amsterdam since Pandemic.

Samuel George Davis Jr. (December 8, 1925 – May 16, 1990) was an American singer, dancer, actor, comedian, film producer and television director.

At age three, Davis began his career in vaudeville with his father Sammy Davis Sr. and the Will Mastin Trio, which toured nationally, and his film career began in 1933. After military service, Davis returned to the trio and became an overnight sensation following a nightclub performance at Ciro’s (in West Hollywood) after the 1951 Academy Awards. With the trio, he became a recording artist. In 1954, at the age of 29, he lost his left eye in a car accident. Several years later, he converted to Judaism, finding commonalities between the oppression experienced by African-American and Jewish communities.

Rafal Blechacz has been deeply associated with the music of Fryderyk Chopin across his whole career. His devotion to the music of his great compatriot began long before 2005 when he won the Warsaw Chopin Competition. Blechacz complements the two large works with Chopin’s haunting F sharp minor Nocturne and his exquisite Barcarolle. On the recording he has placed the Nocturne in F sharp minor op. 48/2 between the sonatas and added the Barcarolle to conclude the album. He points to a particular harmonic progression which is shared between the restless, foreboding Nocturne and a moment in the Sonata No. 2’s first movement (‘one bar is almost exactly the same,’ he says). As for the Sonata No. 3 and the Barcarolle, these share the powerful influence of Italian bel canto opera, which had been crucial to Chopin ever since his student days in Warsaw, when he fell in love with a young singer; he remained passionate about opera for the rest of his life.

Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Orchestre Métropolitain since 2000, Yannick Nézet-Séguin signed a “lifelong” commitment with the Orchestre in September 2019. In September 2018, he became the third Music Director of the Metropolitan Opera (MET) in New York in addition to his ongoing duties as Music Director of the Philadelphia Orchestra, where he has served since 2012.

The Orchestre Métropolitain (OM) is one of Quebec’s key cultural ambassadors. Since its inception in 1981, the OM has set the bar high, building a unique relationship with the community through high-impact initiatives. Over the past 20 years, the Orchestre has grown alongside its artistic director and principal conductor, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, whose career continues to reach new heights.

I’m very happy to share my new double-album Világ featuring the Sonata for solo violin by Béla Bartók along with compositions written for me by Aida Shirazi and Stewart Goodyear and works by Manfred Stahnke and Franco Donatoni.

“Világ” is a Hungarian word meaning “world” or “illumination”. It also resembles the word “village” in English. In Sanskrit, “vilag” means “to cling to”; in Hindi, “separated”.

Martin Stadtfeld’s career as a pianist began with a piano from a clearance sale. At the age of seven, his career aspiration was already clear: concert pianist. The sensational victory at the Leipzig Bach Competition in 2002 becomes the starting point of a career that takes Martin Stadtfeld to the most important festivals and the most important concert halls and orchestras.

Ludovica Burtone is an Italian violinist with an incomparable wealth of musical experiences and a sound that transcends categorization. Her vast compositional oeuvre extends from classical quartets to Brazilian music and contemporary jazz. Burtone has performed in some of Europe’s top orchestras and alongside icons such as Jon Batiste and Dream Theater and in the world scene with musicians such as Arijit Singh and Camila Meza. Now, she is fusing her passion for the string quartet with her unique compositional voice on her debut album Sparks. Due out on March 3, 2023 via Outside in Music, Sparks is an autobiographical story of Burtone’s journey to the United States from Italy, documenting a prolific passage from playing classical music to jazz, world music and beyond. Sparks was born long before Burtone set pen to paper to begin composing. She grew up in a small city (or, “large town”, as she jokes) in northeast Italy, but had dreams of exploring her passion for music elsewhere. Armed with her violin and an appetite for discovery, Burtone began with what she knew: the orchestra. From playing in her regional symphony and then earning a postgraduate degree in Barcelona, she was led back to her hometown to pursue her masters, of all places, where the local conservatory had recently opened up a jazz program. Enraptured by this new form of expression, Burtone received a scholarship to pursue jazz and creative music at the Banff Centre, and while on that side of the Atlantic, started to spend time in New York City. There, she would blaze a trail in territories both physically and musically uncharted. Burtone moved to the United States soon after, earning a diploma in jazz composition at Berklee College of Music in two years. The spark that Burtone fanned into flame has since directed her to some of the most lauded venues in America including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Boston Opera House, Radio City Music Hall, the Jazz Standard, among others.
