Blu-ray Audio plus CD edition featuring a 5.1 surround remix

The 2015 CD + Blu-ray edition of Amused to Death feature a new 5.1 surround remix of the album on high-definition Blu-ray audio completed by longtime Roger Waters / Pink Floyd collaborator and co-producer, James Guthrie. The art has been updated for 2015 by Sean Evans, the creative director of Waters’ 2010-2013 “The Wall Live” tour and movie.

An unblinking look at an entertainment-obsessed society, Amused to Death addresses issues that have only grown in complexity and urgency over the past two decades. With Amused to Death, Roger Waters sounded the alarm about a society increasingly and unthinkingly in thrall to its television screens.

Twenty-three years later, Amused to Death speaks to our present moment in ways that could scarcely have been anticipated two decades ago. In 2015, television is just one option in an endless array of distractions available to us anytime, anywhere, courtesy of our laptops, tablets and smartphones. With eyes glued to our screens, the dilemmas and injustices of the real world can easily recede from view.

This Blu-ray disc compiles some of the finest classic jazz performances ever filmed. The Sound of Jazz was a 1957 CBS TV show which reunited some of the genre’s greatest stars for a one-hour performance that was presented as performed, with no editing. It was a true live-TV experience which produced some of the most moving jazz scenes ever filmed, among them the final meeting of Billie Holiday and Lester Young. The show also produced a studio album by the same title, which is added in its entirety as a bonus on this package. CBS would repeat its success in 1959 with yet another show, this time featuring Miles Davis, Ahmad Jamal and Ben Webster on different sets. Davis is heard both in a quintet format (with John Coltrane on tenor sax) and with the Gil Evans orchestra. Also included here are Gjon Mili’s classic 1944 short film Jammin’ The Blues, one of the very rare movies showcasing Lester Young, and the only existing footage of Charlie Parker on live TV.
