Akinetic, the new album from Chicago songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Erik Hall’s one-man polymathic project In Tall Buildings sees its creator plunge headlong into allegories of communication, loss, impulse, vice, and mass-denialism. With the addition of producer and engineer Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Iron & Wine) Hall crashes through the aforementioned subject matter with brightness and lucidity, yielding his most intelligent and focused songwriting yet. Working out of his house with Deck in Pilsen, Chicago, Hall’s efforts yield ten tracks of spacious and textured handmade pop, comprising one of the most sharply written and deftly recorded home-studio albums in memory. Where his previous titles were natural documents of his musicianship and songcraft, Akinetic arose from deliberate intent to write in concrete pop forms, lyrically informed by what he observed of modern culture, namely its fixation on technology-driven pseudo-progress at the cost of direct communication. ‘Rather than merely dwell in an inviting musical bed,’ Hall states, ‘I wanted to write songs with intentionality that would more directly declare themselves to a listener instead of just passively inviting them in.’ That this was all achieved by one person playing every instrument, gently guided by a kindred and veteran co-producer, denotes Akinetic as the greatest height yet reached for In Tall Buildings.

At this point, IN FLAMES are less of a band than they are a musical institution in the heavy music world. Since helping create Sweden’s legendary “Gothenburg Sound” three decades ago to their current status as melodic metal monoliths, the act have constantly eschewed trends in order to forge their own musical path. This is evident on their 13th full-length »I, The Mask«, which sees them reuniting with multi Grammy-nominated producer Howard Benson (MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE, MOTÖRHEAD), who also produced 2016’s »Battles«, in order to further redefine their sound. “I think it’s very difficult for IN FLAMES to be something we’re not and that dichotomy of melody and aggression will always be at the core of our identity,” vocalist Anders Fridén explains from a tour stop opening for DEEP PURPLE in Mexico. “We are always open to new ideas and don’t let anything limit us,” guitarist Björn Gelotte adds. “We just ask ourselves if we will love playing this stuff live… and as long as we feel that, nothing can really touch us.”

A new signing for Delphian, In Echo is made up of some of Europe’s finest young early-music specialists. Each a soloist in their own right, under director Gawain Glenton they have put together a fascinating snapshot of the musical landscape during the heyday of the Hanseatic League. The seafaring nations of northern Europe have always been connected: London to Tallinn via Lübeck, Hamburg, Bremen and the ports of Holland, Denmark and Sweden. The sixteenth- and seventeenth-century composer/musicians on this recording each looked beyond their own shores and toward a sense of shared European culture and understanding. Andrew Keeling’s new work Northern Soul was commissioned specially to complement this programme.
Formed in 2016, In Echo has already given recitals at Dartington International Summer School and at York Early Music Christmas Festival. In 2018 they will perform in Regensburg, as well as making several appearances in the UK. Their director, specialist cornetto player Gawain Glenton, performs with many leading international groups and directors, including Il Giardino Armonico, Concerto Italiano, I Fagiolini and The Taverner Consort.

Three ensembles of 17th-century music: Fretwork, His Majesty’s Sagbutts and Cornetts and the Magdalena Consort combine forces under the artistic direction of William Hunt for this first complete recording of the consort anthems of Orlando Gibbons. Let us here remind the reader that consort anthems were conceived as domestic music to be performed at the private homes of the nobility and gentry or at court; they are more often than not scored for voices and viols, with alternating instrumental and vocal moments – even if the viols, probably, were to play throughout. Consort anthems are different from verse anthems in that the latter were written for liturgical use, featuring one or more soloists, accompanied by the organ and alternating with passages for the full cathedral choir. To close the subject, the full anthem was entirely written for the chorus. Thus, the present recording shows us Gibbons as a composer for highly skilled amateurs, from the King’s own entourage down to the educated bourgeoisie. Alas, the scarcity of material that has come to us, as well as the flabbergasting diversity of manuscript or published sources, has brought the artists of this album to complete the extant consort anthems with a handful of other kinds of anthems, most likely verse anthems. But whatever the format, Gibbons appears here as a huge though somewhat neglected genius – the utter complexity of his music, his rather short life-span, as well as the fact that many a score may have been lost during the First Civil War and the bleak Cromwellian protectorate, may account for that relative neglect.
