Here is a recording that combines the aesthetic value of music together with the musical works’ historical underpinnings. The pianist Josu De Solaun offers us his interpretation of two of the most significant pieces of the Romantic period: Davidsbündlertänze (1837) by Robert Schumann (1819-1856), the Spring and revolutionary high point of a first Romanticism, and two works by Johannes Brahms (1833-1897), heterodox and conflicting protagonists of an autumnal kind of Romanticism: the Intermezzi, Op. 117 (1892) and the Klavierstücke, Op. 118 (1893). At the same time, the performer proposes a title that, on the one hand, supports his interpretative ideas and, on the other, aims to be a guide for our understanding and comprehension of how many singularities articulate the content of the recording: “Digressions”, a title suggesting a kind of reflection that sets in during the flow of the musical works themselves.

Born in Kiel, Jost Nickel is one of the very few German top tour and session drummers alongside Wolfgang Haffner, whose name also enjoys an excellent reputation internationally. He succeeded as drummer and musical director in the band of Mousse T and played with Sasha, Johannes Oerding, Marla Glen and Seeed. Since 2006, Jost Nickel has been the drummer for Disko No. 1, the band of German soul superstar Jan Delay.

Involuntarily slowed down by the shutdown of the cultural business, Jost Nickel 2020 has used the time meaningfully and with “The Check In” has finally written and recorded his debut album, which is already eagerly awaited by many.

In addition to the German Top musicians, Claus Fischer (Bass), Hanno Busch (guitar), Simon Oslender (Keys), Lutz Krajenski (Arr.), Mark Smith (bass) and Dirk Berger (guitar) as well as the colleagues of Disko No. 1, international jazz stars such as Jimmy Haslip, Barry Finnerty and Jeff Lorber recorded the album.

Well things want to have a while, it is said in the vernacular and Jost Nickel has really taken a lot of time with writing and realizing his debut album, but the waiting was worth it! With” The Check In ” the drummer has made a big hit!

One of the sad things about Josquin research is that works are judged spurious—or even just possibly spurious—and then get forgotten entirely. That is partly because there are so many superb Josquin works that are beyond doubt; but all the same it is a pity. Besides, the case of the Missa Une mousse de Biscaye has been one of the most energetically argued over the years, both for and against. The main issues here are that there are a lot of dissonances that are uncharacteristic of his mature style; and the main counter-argument is that in his early years he was experimenting with many different styles. Either way, there seems not to have been a recording of it since 1959, which is a great pity, because it is a marvellous piece, whoever composed it. Some years ago I went on record as thinking that, on balance, it was probably not by Josquin. Now that I have heard this wonderful recording I am almost ready to rethink the whole thing.

Reactions to this release may well depend on how listeners feel about violinist Joshua Bell’s music-making in general. Bell is an heir to the violin idols of the early 20th century, and he grabs attention and doesn’t let it go: his tone is startlingly brilliant, his execution flawless, his insights into the music generally well-worn ones. In the two Bach violin concertos that make up the bulk of this Sony release, that’s what’s here, and he is ideally partnered by the champions in the silvery-strings derby, the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, under his own direction. He holds the ensemble together with a naturalness that takes the whole enterprise beyond the old-fashioned. But there is a new wrinkle to this release: a pair of arrangements of arrangements. Most daring, and perhaps less successful, is an orchestration of Mendelssohn’s version of the Chaconne from the Partita No. 2 for solo violin in D minor, BWV 1004. Bell’s idea seems to be that this is something his forerunners of a century ago might have done, and indeed the Mendelssohn arrangement is a work that gives insights into how he and his time experienced Bach. Adding the orchestra to it introduces another level of noise, however, and it’s not at all clear that the result is to the good. The situation is similar with the little Gavotte and Rondeau twice filtered through Schumann and the same arranger as with the Mendelssohn, Julian Malone. None of this is going to bother listeners coming to this album already enamored of Bell’s flashing tone, however, and it must be said that on that terrain he is in unusually good form here.

Founded nearly eighty years ago, the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne enjoys an enviable reputation and has welcomed the greatest artists as its guests, from Clara Haskil and Alfred Cortot to Murray Perahia and Martha Argerich, from Paul Hindemith to Günter Wand. Despite its long history, the orchestra has had only six musical directors, including Armin Jordan from 1973 to 1985. The young American conductor Joshua Weilerstein succeeded Christian Zacharias in 2015. In addition to his conducting skills and his interest in rare repertory, he has also brought a love of musical outreach. His very popular podcast, “Sticky Notes”, discusses music in an accessible way.

Josh Speers is your quintessential All-American hero. A blue-collar rock songwriter, a motorcyclist, a lover of baseball, an extremely well-read guy. One of four brothers from Delaware, Josh moved out to Los Angeles in 2018 to take a real shot at a music career, where he wound up finding kindred spirits in the likes of songwriter Tommy English (Kacey Musgraves) and producer Lars Stalfors (St. Vincent, Cold War Kids), who largely wrote and produced Human Now with Speers, as well as Jon Castelli (Khalid, Summer Walker x Drake) who mixed several songs on the EP. The result is an inspired search for honesty, full of driving ’80s guitar riffs, steady drums and perfectly described by Speers as the lovechild of Bruce Springsteen and Carly Rae Jepsen.
