A homage from one superb Italian soprano to her forebear, the first “opera diva”.
Anna Renzi (c. 1620 – after 1661) was an Italian soprano renowned for her acting ability as well as her voice, who has been described as the first diva in the history of opera. Born in Rome, Anna Renzi was highly popular in Vienna in 1640s and made her debut in 1640 at the Palazzo Pallavicini-Rospigliosi in the presence of Cardinal Richelieu, as Lucinda in Il favorito del principe by the young composer Filiberto Laurenzi, who continued to function as her teacher and/or accompanist in later years. She became the most celebrated and highest-paid singer of the age, and famous composers wrote especially for her. Composers tended to make use of the full extent of Renzi’s voice, which spanned from middle C to high B-flat, and the four surviving non-Monteverdian settings of roles written for her (by Sacrati, Laurenzi, Cesti and Ziani) are characterized by strong dramatic, emotional and stylistic contrasts, designed to show off her uncanny command of vocal and expressive means.

“Rob wanted the world of The Northman to feel harsh and uncomfortable, and for everything to feel like it was caked in mud and dry blood, so it was crucial for the score to mirror that.” Composers Robin Carolan (Tri-Angle Records) and Sebastian Gainsborough (Vessel) were given a task of epic proportions when director Rob Eggers (The VVitch, The Lighthouse) asked them to create the score for his ambitious and highly anticipated new film The Northman. They needed to make a score that both honoured the immense research that had gone into the authenticity of this Viking era period piece and complimented the cinematic maximalism of the film for a modern audience. The artists stretched themselves to the depths of their creativity and the resulting album is a gorgeous sonic tableaux that places the listener right in the center of the film.

Irish producer Jacknife Lee found fame and fortune working for rock behemoths like U2, Snow Patrol and Kasabian. In 2019, his album The Jacknife Lee revealed another side to him, one that’s far more electronic, adventurous, and open to African voices (it features Kenyan rapper Muthoni Drummer Queen and Ghanaian Australian Genesis Owusu). Today, Lee further explores African music, producing the first international album by singer Rokia Koné. A huge star in her native Mali, she gained recognition in Europe in the mid-2010s with the women’s collective ‘The Amazon of Africa’. Like any good West African singer, she’s the owner of a raspy voice that’s full of unbridled power; the voice of a warrior unbeaten in battle. The Mandingo tradition is omnipresent throughout her fiery vocals (which are sung in her native language of Bambara) as well as in the arrangements and structures of her songs. Jacknife Lee offers her an exoskeleton, tailor-made for all terrains, to help her take her danceable tracks around the world. The production features bouncy percussion and mesmerising vocal rhythms. Rob de Nijs is one of most well-known Dutch singers of the post-war era. After having his first hit single with Rob de Nijs & the Lords in 1963, he continued to chart as a soloist into the next century while remaining one of the most-played Dutch artists on Dutch radio. In 2001, he received the Radio 2 Zendtijd Award – an award presented to nationals with lasting influence on Dutch music. DJ Frits Spits once called de Nijs “the embodiment of the history of Dutch pop music.”

Marin Marais (1656–1728) besides being Louis XIV’s court musician, was a prolific composer. He composed both operas, certain of which were very successful, instrumental music and some (lost) religious vocal music. As a viol player he published five books which include some of the most interesting and beautiful music for the viol. These five books also are chock full of performance instructions both for the left hand as well as the bow hand. They are a gold mine for viol players and are as relevant to teaching a musician good technique on the viol nowadays as they were when originally printed in the late seventeenth and beginning of the eighteenth century.
