Polish composer Henryk Mikolaj Górecki was not hugely prolific, but he was something of a hero to listeners who welcomed the mysticism and transparent emotional expressiveness of his works after he turned from the avant-garde to a more accessible post-Modern tonal language in the mid-1970s. A 1993 recording of his Third Symphony (“Symphony of Sorrowful Songs,” 1976), in fact, became an international best-seller. This recording with Antoni Wit leading the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra includes four works typical of his later style. Little Requiem for a Certain Polka, for piano and orchestra (1993) is in four movements whose dramatically contrasting juxtapositions are typical of the Eastern European minimalist and polystylistic trends of the era: a largely tonal language; a predominantly quiet mood punctuated by startling, rambunctious outbursts (which can sound like Shostakovich on an ironically cheerful day); and a cryptic sense of structure and musical development that owes little to earlier models from the classical (or any other) tradition. Concerto-Cantata for flute and orchestra (1992), which is recorded here for the first time, follows the form of the Requiem surprisingly closely, but is overall less successful due to its tendency to overdo repetition, and the relative blandness of its musical ideas. The brief Harpsichord Concerto (1980), performed in its version for piano, is of an entirely different cast, made up of two very fast movements, marked Allegro molto and Vivace marcatissimo, and its manic energy is completely engaging. In this piece pianist Anna Górecka, the composer’s daughter, is given ample opportunity to display her virtuosic gifts. The outer movements of Three Dances (1973) have the direct appeal of Bartók’s folk-influenced works, and a middle movement that’s a more typically Góreckian elegy. Wit, who has done much to bring contemporary Eastern European, and especially Polish, music to the attention of broader audiences, delivers compelling performances of the pieces. Some inconsistencies in the playing of Górecki’s exposed and not-always-idiomatic orchestral writing, however, are reminders that the Warsaw Philharmonic, although a very fine ensemble, is not among the very top tier of the world’s orchestras, particularly in its string section. Naxos’ sound is clean and balanced, but not especially lively or present.

Volume 70 of the Vivaldi Edition revives a serenade by the “Red Priest” led with brio by Andrea Buccarella, his Abchordis Ensemble and a triad of vibrant soloists. In spite of the warning from her friend Nice, the nymph Eurilla is in love with the shepherd Alcindo, and, to punish him for his lack of enthusiasm, tries to trick him into loving her. The story is simple, the trio of characters borrowed from Arcadia and the playful tone, as befits this type of open-air cantata composed for political, dynastic or private celebrations. The Serenata a tre RV 690, under Vivaldi’s pen, nevertheless possesses all the qualities of an exquisitely polished miniature opera that is also light-hearted. Only three manuscripts have reached us today of the eight serenades we know Vivaldi composed. The Serenata a tre, preserved in the Turin library, the source used by the Vivaldi Edition for it’s publications, fired the enthusiasm of the conductor and harpsichordist Andrea Buccarella and a larger than usual Abchordis Ensemble.

For Anastassiya Dranchuk’s debut album ‘Rites de Passage’, the choice of pieces by Tchaikovsky, Say, Schubert and Liszt was no coincidence. The plays had and still have a special emotional meaning in Anastassiya’s life. For her, the individual compositions represent rites of passage (rites de passage, a concept from ethnology): they tell of the transition from childhood to adulthood, peace/war, birth/death… In general, it is an emotionally and tonally very colourful, technically demanding programme, which has the most diverse dualities on the topic.

In 2019, I compulsively wrote a collection of thoughts in the form of poems entitled ‘RINT’OH-ME’, which later became a musicopoetic performance, with considerable success at various festivals in Campania, Umbria and Apulia.
“RINT’ON-MUSIC” is, in itself, the closing of that cycle of concerts with the recording of the music, but also, the beginning of a new cycle, since, there is new music, a new ensemble (originally in duo with accordionist Rocco Zacagnino) and some new poems from the next collection (“En tu jardin…”)
… when I was a child I played in front of my grandfather and he was moved and said: ‘el fa parlar este instrument’ (‘he makes this instrument speak’). 40 years later, I think I have come to find my own language, my own way of speaking not only through the instrument but also through my poetry.

This is the third of four albums to be released that will form a recording cycle that explores the closely intertwined personal and artistic connections between three musical giants: Clara Schumann, Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms. Robert Schumann’s and Johannes Brahms’ symphonies will be paired and combined with Clara Schumann’s chamber works and orchestral pieces, including some special gems. “I have always loved these symphonies and saw many links between them. It has always been my dream to record them and release them together. No story of these two composers is complete without Clara, as famous in her lifetime as her husband, and a strong influence on both Robert and Johannes. ?We crafted this vision with Clara Schumann scholar Julie Pedneault-Deslauriers, to combine the symphonies with pieces by Clara in ways that provide an insightful narrative to the intertwined lives and works of these three Romantics.” – Alexander Shelley

He wants to inspire his audience with the music of this great composer in the same way that it once captivated him.

Witness to a solid and emblazoned tradition, Giacomo Miluccio (1918-1998), knew how to combine all those souls thai distinguished Neapolitan-trained artists for centuries. Ceaseless study led him to master the instrument with that mastership exhibited with “natu ralness ” and “simplicity “; he generously instructed a group of instrumentalists and constantly showed his performative vocation among the ranks of the centuries-old Sancarlian orchestra as well as in solo and chamber music.

“The new album is an approach to my Turkish roots. From several hundred pieces, I then selected these five and arranged them.”

The songs work with a poetic sound language dominated by melody and rhythm.

“I chose the songs for their melodies, but rhythmic finesse also plays a role,” says Seifert. “Turkish music is dominated by odd time signatures, which is a real playground for a bass player in particular.”

The Achim Seifert Project interprets the crooked bars with a smooth nonchalance that is easy on the ear, but also leaves room for improvisation – the musicians are well aware of the contextual background of the songs.

In addition to these songs, Seifert has also contributed three originals to the album, some of which were co-produced with his pianist Roman Rofalski.

The melodies are often carried by the saxophonist and clarinettist Leonard Huhn, whom some may know from the band Schmid’s Huhn. Konrad Ullrich sits at the drums – a groove machine – which is very important for the music.

And completing the sound are flutist Sarpay Özcagatay and violinist Mona Burger, who add an extra dimension to the music.

How these songs merge with a western conception of jazz is of high delicacy.

Justice have announced a deluxe 15th anniversary reissue of their debut album †. It’s due out December 15th via Ed Banger Records/Because Music, and they’re previewing its release today with Logic’s remix of their breakout single “D.A.N.C.E.”

The deluxe edition of † comprises the original 2007 album, which includes highlights like “Genesis,” “Phantom Pt. II,” and “DVNO.” It also features an additional six bonus rarities, a handful of demos, and the first proper release of album outtake “Donna.”

If Logic’s version of “D.A.N.C.E.” sounds familiar to you, that’s probably because the rapper actually shared a recording of the track back in 2012 titled “The Spotlight.” Logic was still a relatively new name at the time, which explains why the lyrics here focus on him adjusting to fame: “Now that a brother is finally recognized/ I will not let the limelight hypnotize,” he raps over the original track’s house beats and strings.

Time goes by so quickly in these modern times that it has become an exclusive privilege to people. The concept of music, specifically my minimal oriented music, only can exist in time. The slow progression, the building of the material, the motifs and the search for new sounds is audible in this new box”.
