On their previous Supraphon recordings (SU 4185 – Musica per arpa, SU 4188 – Vivaldi, Telemann, Bach, SU 4121 – Telemann, Britten ad.), harpist Kateřina Englichová and oboist Vilém Veverka sufficiently proved their outstanding performance qualities as well as informed interest in such mutually remote music worlds as the Baroque and the 20th century modernism. The present recording – their first made in dues – reflects more than twelve years of their performing together in concerts. The not-so-common combination of oboe and harp provides an endless scale of timbres and the resulting impression is marked both by frailness and confident virtuosity. Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin is the crucial piece on the album and represents the composer’s memories of his friends lost in the First World War. Little musical gems written by Ravel and Debussy resound here in sensitive arrangements which have enriched the compositions by new timbre qualities. Primavera composed by Luboš Sluka was composed explicitly for the Englichová – Veverka duo and appears here in premiere recording.

The musical world of Kateřina Englichová and Vilém Veverka: entrancing timbre scales, frailness and virtuosity

“The playing is exceptional – there is strong evidence is of interpretative sympathy between the two instrumentalists. The recording quality is very clear and uncluttered.” (MusicWeb International)

b. Kate Barnard, Guildford, Surrey, England. Westbrook initially studied as a painter, exhibiting in the UK, Europe and the USA, before joining her future husband in the Mike Westbrook Brass Band (1974). Self-taught as a musician she sings and plays a variety of wind instruments, as well as composing and writing lyrics for many of Mike Westbrook’s groups. Independently, she was a guest soloist with the RAI Orchestra in Rome and the Zurich Radio Orchestra during the 70s, and in the 80s worked on projects with Lindsay Cooper. She sings in French, German, Greek and Italian and has performed from the works of poets and songwriters as diverse as D.H. Lawrence, William Blake, Cole Porter, Rossini and Lorca. In conjunction with Mike Westbrook, she organized many multi-media events involving music, performance and painting, which have been performed on television and the theatre. With such a wide variety of experience it is hardly surprising that she has complained: ‘I think we’ve got some way to go before there’s an understanding in the musical world of this thing greater than any category: music’.

It was 50 years ago when Kate Taylor released her first full-length LP, Sister Kate. The album reached the Billboard Top 100, propelled by her version of brother James’ lovely lullaby “You Can Close Your Eyes”. Kate was part of a whole skew of Taylor siblings (Alex, Hugh, Livingston) whose musical careers were piggy-backed on top of the rocketing success of James. After all, she was billed as “Sister Kate”, not Kate Taylor. Her musical career lost steam after the debut album, but she still occasionally recorded and performed.

Kate Rusby’s album, Hand Me Down, started life a few years ago whilst she was rehearsing for the Jo Whiley Show on BBC Radio 2. Jo asks her live music guests to perform songs of their own plus any cover version of their choice, Kate’s choice at that time was Oasis’ “Don’t Go Away”; on her second visit to the show she chose by ‘Friday I’m in Love’ by The Cure.”As a folk singer, it’s what I do, re-interpret existing songs, but usually the songs are much, much older. After playing a version of Oasis’ ‘Don’t Go Away’ on the BBC Radio 2 Jo Whiley show, about 5 years ago, it dawned on me that not just the very old songs are handed down through the generations, but also favourite songs of any age, of any generation. Songs are precious for many different reasons. With ‘Don’t Go Away’ proving so popular on the last album and hearing the reaction when we performed it on tour, I decided, “Right, that’s it! I am doing a whole album of covers.” It was always the plan to make this album this year, lock-down just made it more intimate. We have laughed and we have cried, we have danced and we have sung. All of that is here, engrained in every track.”

Several composers have written music inspired by the story of Arianna (also commonly known as Ariadne) abandoned by Theseus on the island of Naxos. The American mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey, lauded for her intelligent and luminous singing, chose to illustrate this story by means of three composers: Alessandro Scarlatti, Handel and Haydn and with the help of the Arcangelo ensemble, founded by harpsichordist and organist Jonathan Cohen. The archetype of the woman abandoned, the character of Arianna offers composers and performers alike vast expressive possibilities for an audience always eager to identify themselves with the scarred heroine.
