Trumpet player Martti Vesala clearly loves the jazz of the 60s and 70s – melodic without being too easy, funky and yet relaxed, filled to the brim with gripping grooves and ripping solos. Little wonder, then, that legendary jazz publication Downbeat recently compared him to Miles Davis. And yet, thanks to Vesala’s drive, passion and virtuosity “Stars Aligned” feels perfectly contemporary.

Mark Turner is one of the most admired saxophonists of his generation, renowned for his exploratory intellect and intimate expressivity on the full range of the tenor. This is his ECM leader debut, following albums for the label in the cooperative trio Fly with Larry Grenadier and Jeff Ballard, and appearances on key recordings by Billy Hart, Enrico Rava and Stefano Bollani. Turner leads a quartet of kindred spirits here, often entwining in serpentine fashion with rising-star trumpeter Avishai Cohen. They play long, introspective lines of hypnotic grace; and with the lithe rhythm section of bassist Joe Martin and drummer Marcus Gilmore, there is subtle volatility in the air.

In the 1990s, jazz tribute albums could be incredibly predictable, with young tenor saxophonists paying tribute to John Coltrane by emulating his tone and playing his best-known songs exactly like he played them, or young trumpeters saluting Miles Davis by trying to sound like a carbon copy of him on yet another version of “So What” or “Solar.” Spirit of Django is Martin Taylor’s tribute to fellow guitarist Django Reinhardt, and thankfully, this is one tribute album that’s interesting and unpredictable instead of cliché-ridden. Though Taylor’s love of Reinhardt’s legacy is evident throughout the album, the guitarist never sounds like an outright clone. His individuality comes through on Reinhardt pieces (including “Nuages” and “Minor Swing”), as well as Fats Waller’s “Honeysuckle Rose” and the standards “Night and Day” and “Lady Be Good.” To his credit, Taylor makes some unlikely choices. Pat Metheny’s “James,” for example, isn’t something you’d expect to hear on a Reinhardt tribute, yet Taylor’s interpretation fits in perfectly. This excellent CD is highly recommended to admirers of both Taylor and Reinhardt.

Last week, the 55th Montreux Jazz Festival wrapped up in Switzerland. Started in 1967 by Claude Nobs, Geo Voumard and Rene Langel, the yearly festival was at first true to its name and focused exclusively on jazz performers. However, over the years, it has grown to encompass nearly all types of music and has seen a wide range of performers including Etta James, Bob Dylan, Elton John, Lauren Hill, Aretha Franklin, David Bowie, James Brown, Kendrick Lamar, Leonard Cohen, Marvin Gaye, Miles Davis, Nina Simone, and many more. It has also proven to be a popular recording spot with nearly 100 albums documenting the numerous concerts. Adding to that album legacy, earlier this year BMG kicked off The Montreux Years series, featuring volumes devoted to an artists’ time at Montreux. The first two featured Nina Simone and Etta James. Now, the next two volumes have been announced and are devoted to Marianne Faithfull and Muddy Waters. The Faithfull entry spans concerts from 1995 to 2009 while the Waters album chronicles shows from 1972 to 1977. Both will be available in CD and 2-LP editions as well as digitally. They are each due on September 17.

Recipient of a Grammy, honored with Downbeat’s ‘Lifetime Achievement’ award, and host of National Public Radio’s longest running program, the iconic ‘Piano Jazz’, Marian McPartland was one of the pioneer women in jazz. Elegant, tasteful, charming, sensuous” (Melody Maker), with a style that one critic called “flexible, complex, and almost impossible to pigeonhole”, she played everything from Dixieland to the avant-garde. McPartland teams up in a rare piano/bass duo, something she had always wanted to do, since “the possibilities of the music being free and uninhibited are much greater. Elegant, tasteful, charming, sensuous, with a style that one critic called “flexible, complex, and almost impossible to pigeonhole”, she played everything from Dixieland to the avant-garde. McPartland teams up in a rare piano/bass duo, something she had always wanted to do, since “the possibilities of the music being free and uninhibited are much greater”. Her bassist, Linc Milliman, “sounds like a whole rhythm section…I may start a tune…but often he will set the tempo and the mood.” The ‘live’ settings in Rochester NY and Manhattan are perfect stages for the music’s intimacy. Two pieces are original ballads, Marian’s reflective Twilight World and her impressionistic Illusion. The evergreen Indian Summer begins as ballad before warming up for a medium-tempo stroll with bass and piano hand-in-hand, and Close Your Eyes follows with the duo’s sophisticated interaction. Here’s That Rainy Day drips bittersweet tones, whereas McPartland has her own modal take on the Davis classic, Milestones. There’s a bit of a traditional air to Hoagy Carmicheal’s New Orleans, and McPartland digs some depth into the country-pop of By the Time I Get To Phoenix. The tasty Mercer Ellington blues Things Aint What They Used To Be ends this exquisite album of Marian McPartland at her classy best. A must for those who love piano jazz!

Marcus Miller – Laid Black (2018) [Official Digital Download 24bit/48kHz]

Marcus Miller – Laid Black (2018)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/48 kHz | Time – 53:50 minutes | 636 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Blue Note Records

There is a before and an after 1986 for Marcus Miller. That year, the bassist was 27 years old and composed and produced Miles Davis’ famous Tutu. Since then, the career of this four-string virtuoso has expanded with stunning albums for others (over 500!) and for himself (more than twenty), as well as multiple collaborations… Like often with Marcus Miller, the borders between jazz, funk, soul and blues are magnificently blurred. And it is once again the case with this Laid Black. After Afrodeezia, which he designed like a musical journey through his personal history, retracing the path of his ancestors, Laid Black falls within present time with a cocktail of all the urban sounds he loves: hip-hop, trap, soul, funk, R&B and, of course, jazz. In fact, this kind of 180° overview is the man’s trademark. Shuffling between various currents of African-American music. And even inserting a few clever references when he covers Que Será, Será (Whatever Will Be, Will Be) popularised by Doris Day, but using Sly Stone’s arrangement from 1973 Fresh… For this 2018 opus, Marcus Miller has called upon a few sharp shooters such as Trombone Shorty, Kirk Whalum, Take Six, Jonathan Butler and the young Belgian soul sister Selah Sue. Groove galore and precise yet never sickening pyrotechnics are at the core of an album that only its author knows how to make. – Clotilde Maréchal

A two-time GRAMMY Award winner, bassist, producer, composer, and all-around musician Marcus Miller has been a student and a leader, a creator and an interpreter, a master and a mentor in the art form of music – from his teen years to the present – with many more miles to go before he sleeps…a profound past paving the way to an as yet unfathomable future. Marcus continues this legacy with A Night in Monte-Carlo, a live audio document of an amazing concert he was commissioned to perform on November 29, 2008 in the “rich man’s playground” of Monaco – a performance of music of his choice, much of it from his pen, featuring his arrangements for symphony orchestra. It features Marcus leading both his quartet and the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, with special guests: trumpeter Roy Hargrove as well as singer, songwriter and guitarist Raul Midón.

With Overpass, Marc Johnson makes a decisive and intriguing contribution to ECM’s solo bass tradition. Johnson’s experiments with the bass and its potential as a lead voice began during his tenure with the Bill Evans Trio, where his nightly solo feature on “Nardis”, Miles Davis’s tune, inspired him to new ideas. “Nardis” is revisited on this new studio album recorded in S~ao Paulo, Brazil, alongside Alex North’s “Love Theme from Spartacus” (another Evans Trio favourite), Eddie Harris’s “Freedom Jazz Dance” and five Johnson originals including “Samurai Fly”, a recasting of “Samurai Hee-Haw”, which Marc previously recorded for ECM with his Bass Desires band and with the John Abercrombie Trio.

Coursing through the cosmic pulse of Jazz-Funk is the inimitable influence of Lonnie Liston Smith. For over five decades, the legendary keyboardist and bandleader has been a driving force in shaping the genre’s sound. Smith made his recording debut as a sideman for heavyweights Miles Davis, Pharoah Sanders, Gato Barbieri and Leon Thomas. He later formed his own ensemble, Lonnie Liston Smith and the Cosmic Echoes which delivered an incredible run of classic albums through the 1970s. His music has served as the foundation for immortal hip-hop samples and ecstatic dancefloor revelry. In late February 2020, Smith headlined Jazz Is Dead’s Black History Month series, giving many jazz fans what would be their last taste of live music before the nightmare of COVID-19 that took over in the weeks that followed. Now, he reunites with Jazz Is Dead to deliver Lonnie Liston Smith JID017 – a full-bloom tribute to the multitude of sonic strains that all lead back to the fingertips of the maestro himself.
