Orange Mountain Music is proud to present Philip Glass’s “Etudes for Piano” performed by Dutch pianist Feico Deutekom. Following up on his successful first album on OMM, “Musical Offering” Deutekom’s new album is a new examination of Glass’s piano Etudes, one of the landmark bodies of work in the 21st Century, from a new perspective. The most common approach for pianists is as “completists” and to simple record Glass’s twenty Etudes in straight order. Deutekom, one of the preeminent Glass specialists on the scene today, takes a much more personal approach. Deutekom performs and records the Etudes in a sequence which tells a very different story from Glass’s own order. In fact, there’s a historical case to be made for re-sequencing Glass’s Etudes as the composer did himself when he renumbered 1-6 after the premieres. The result is a travelogue – a time-traveling musical adventure with a different dramatic arc from the familiar sequence. Beginning with Etude No.2, Deutekom then jumps ahead more than a decade of compositional time to Etude No.17, then backwards to No. 16, then further back to No.4… the listener is transported by Deutekom’s playing in the form of an old story told in a new way. Recorded in Middelburg in the Netherlands, the album has a four page booklet inside a digipack and cover art by the renowned artist Johannes Bosgra.

Their previous album Arrival of The New Elders presented a more varied and reflective trio, still as groovy as ever, but more structured and less jam oriented, earning them a 9/10 review in Uncut and a spot in their albums of the year list, noting their telepathic communion and concluding with “this is an Elephant9 you´ll never forget”. Reviews in Jazzwise, Shindig, Prog, Electronic Sound, The Quietus and several others followed in the same fashion. All composers are utterly dependent upon the talented musicians who interpret and perform their works. In jazz, however, the composer (at least the smart jazz composer!) seeks to surround him or herself with artists that go beyond simply realizing the notes on the page; imbuing the music with their own sensibilities . . . . often taking it in directions that the composer only wishes he/she had conjured up! With each passing year, I recognize more and more how thrilling it is . . . and how lucky I am . . . to work with such wonderful musicians and friends. Jack and Mark have been with me from the very first Jazz Surge album while Corey, Danny and Sara have all collaborated on multiple recording projects and performances. They are like a second family.
It was, however, my first time to get to work with both Matt and Kate. An ardent fan of each for years, I relished the opportunity for Matt to put his playful spin on these tunes while the sound of Kate’s mellifluous voice was never far from my ear while writing these tunes – even before I approached her about doing the recording! They immediately fit right into the family, and I can’t thank them enough for their trust, energy, and creative contributions.

The Great Twenty-Eight is a compilation album by American musician Chuck Berry, released in 1982 on Chess Records. In 2003, the album was ranked number 21 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, maintaining the rating in a 2012 revised list, the second-highest ranking compilation on the list after The Sun Sessions by Elvis Presley. It was ranked number 51 in the 2020 reboot of the list.
Out of print for many years, the compilation was reissued on vinyl by Geffen Records on August 4, 2017, five months after his death. All of its 28 tracks can be found on the 2000 Anthology two-disc set. Geffen later announced a ‘Super Deluxe Edition’ vinyl reissue, containing the original album, a new compilation ‘More Great Chuck Berry’, a live album ‘Oh Yeah! Live In Detroit’, recorded in 1963, and a 10″ EP called ‘Berry Christmas’.
A survey of Berry’s first decade of recording on Chess Records, it contains 21 singles along with six of their B-sides and one album track from Chuck Berry in London. Of those singles, eleven were Top 10 hits on the Billboard R&B singles chart and ten were Top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100.

Today, we announced the release of Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman, With Marty Stuart And His Fabulous Superlatives Celebrate The 50th Anniversary Of Sweetheart Of The Rodeo set for Record Store Day 2024, April 20, as a limited edition 2 LP Translucent Gold Vinyl of 2,500 pressings, in a stunning gatefold cover. The album includes 24 tracks, selected from various stops on the 23-city, 27-show tour by Stuart’s audio engineer and the album’s producer, Mick Conley, and mastered for vinyl release by long time Byrds re-issue producer Joe Reagoso.
This was one of the best tours—if not THE best—I was ever on in 60 years of being in music. Every night was exciting. I couldn’t think of anybody else to do that presentation with other than Marty and the Superlatives. Listening to this live recording puts me right back on stage with Roger, Marty, Kenny Vaughan, Harry Stinson and Chris Scruggs.

Bill Frisell, the supreme textualist and restless searcher for new contexts, has gone supersize. Employing two classical ensembles, the 60-piece Brussels Philharmonic and the 11-piece Umbria Jazz Orchestra, Frisell and famed composer/arranger Michael Gibbs, a longtime mentor and friend of the guitarist, have programmed an entire set with each group. Gibbs, who began scoring for films and simultaneously leading jazz groups in the early 1970s, is an equal partner in this beautifully recorded project. The Brussels Philharmonic set opens with the short and uneasy “Nocturne Vulgaire,” in which strings and brass nervously shift before Frisell and his drummer Rudy Royston and bassist Thomas Morgan enter. They pluck a few notes before an abrupt transition to more familiar territory, a version of Billy Strayhorn’s “Lush Life.” Frisell slowly works his elongated way in Strayhorn’s jazz standard, switching between notes and chords, backed by a lush swarm of strings. Verging on joyous easy listening, Gibbs’ “Sweet Rain” rolls along with Frisell and the strings trading leads. In the Brussels closer, Stephen Foster’s unerringly divine “Beautiful Dreamer,” Frisell—who’s always been a sucker for a great tune—picks out the melody as the band confects an opulent background. The Umbrian set, played with a smaller band that’s used to playing jazz, has fewer classical influences. Ron Carter’s “Doom,” the only song performed by both groups, is cinematically sweeping with the Brussels Philharmonic but stripped to just the melody’s swaying rhythm, around which Frisell solos, on the Umbrian Orchestra’s more leisurely-tempoed take. Each well-played set works in its own way, as Frisell and Gibbs search for novel insights in this pleasant experiment. – Robert Baird
