2019 release from Nick Murphy, the artist formerly known as Chet Faker. Run Fast Sleep Naked is the follow-up to his 2014 debut, Built on Glass, which was released under the Chet Faker moniker, and his most recent effort, 2017’s Missing Link EP. Co-produced by Dave Harrington, the vocals for the collection were captured all around the world during the last four years. For the record, Murphy found “spaces and environments that most inspired him,” ranging from his grandmother’s living room to a studio in Tokyo to a New Zealand rental home while on vacation with his family. During this period, the musician began a process of intense self-examination, using Joseph Campbell’s writings to question his role as an artist in modern society. The instrumentation for the album was later recorded at Brooklyn, New York’s Figure 8 with help from over 15 musicians and a full orchestra.

In 2014, Nick Mulvey launched his career with the album First Mind, after having dazzled as a part of the Portico Quartet, a bizarre jazz formation which was showered with awards between 2008 and 2014. This opus gave us a look at a fairly gifted songwriter, whose heart seems to hold a special place for folk. But this was a very singular folk, like that concocted by John Martyn or Nick Drake many years ago. And it was hardly a normal pop music – minimalist and repetitive (Glass?), sometimes risking bifurcations which are a long way from Western music (Mulvey studied music in Havana for a long time). The result was pretty bewildering, stunning and simply good… Three years later, we find a Nick Mulvey once again hungry for a diversity of sound. We traverse this Wake Up Now as if we were flicking through an atlas. The Latin American and African influences are never overpowering, but rather they subtly destabilise the structures of these compositions, be they pop or folk. They make a colourful fuel for these songs that deal with the refugee crisis as well as the simple joy of life.

First Mind is an engrossing listen, and not easily defined. It encourages an open-mind (the ‘First Mind’ perhaps), and a sense of the worldliness that Nick poured into its making. Cucurucu is an interpretation of DH Lawrence’s poem, Piano, wrapped within a heady groove. And groove, for all its modern day baggage, is at the heart of everything Nick Mulvey does. Nitrous, a song about a daydreamer selling laughing gas, positively radiates with a classic chug and groove when the bassline slinks in. There are contemplative moments too, Fever to the Form and Meet Me There are poignant odes, whilst The Trellis and Juramidam showcase that leftfield, Eastern-inflected guitar technique. It is a record that gets under your skin, and its sense of exploration is palpable.

“Live at the Roundhouse” is unlike any other concert film connected with Pink Floyd. It’s the nearest thing you can get to a time machine, transporting you back to the very earliest days of the band. Nick Mason, the only band member to have played on all of Pink Floyd s studio albums, returns to the group’s earliest records, joined in the line-up by Gary Kemp, Guy Pratt, Lee Harris and Dom Beken. Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets took the drummer back to clubs for the first time in 1967, then to theatres, across the UK, North America and Europe, playing only music his old band had recorded before The Dark Side of the Moon. Captured from the band’s celebrated shows at London’s Roundhouse, where Pink Floyd played some of their most revered early shows in the 1960s, the film features a uniquely thrilling set list including songs hailing from Syd Barrett’s time with the band. Only four songs from this eclectic roster have ever previously appeared on official live releases by Pink Floyd or its members. Everything else is being experienced for the first time since their original live performances.

Nick Mason is the drummer of Pink Floyd and the only member to have remained in the group for its entire existence. Born Nicholas Berkeley Mason on January 27, 1944, in the Downshire Hills area of Birmingham, England, he met future bandmates Roger Waters and Rick Wright while studying architecture at Regent Street Polytechnic. He began playing with them in Sigma 6 in 1963, then the Screaming Abdabs the following year, and finally in 1965 the Syd Barrett-led blues/R&B outfits that soon became Pink Floyd. Although drumming for Floyd was far and away Mason’s primary concern over the next few decades, he did occasionally delve into extracurricular projects. He moonlighted as a producer during the ’70s (particularly during the latter half of the decade), working not just with fellow proggers like Robert Wyatt, Gong, and Steve Hillage, but also post-bop jazz eccentric Michael Mantler and punk group the Damned. In 1981, Mason released the first album ever under his own name, Fictitious Sports. The music was a quirky blend of jazz and rock composed by Carla Bley, who also played keyboards; other supporting musicians included vocalist Wyatt, trumpeter Mantler, and guitarist Chris Spedding. In turn, Mason played drums with Mantler off and on over the ’80s, including on the albums Something Else (1982) and Live (1987). Mason also formed a production company with former 10cc guitarist Rick Fenn, which produced music for films (including White of the Eye), television, and advertisements. As Mason + Fenn, the two also recorded a pop album in 1985, called Profiles, which produced the David Gilmour-sung single “Lie for a Lie.” As Floyd’s recording and touring schedule grew more sporadic, Mason was left with more time to pursue his favorite hobby, auto racing. ~ Steve Huey

Columbia, apparently attempting to cash in on Pink Floyd’s explosion in popularity, released this album in 1981 under Nick Mason’s name when in reality he’s simply the drummer in this incarnation of Carla Bley’s ensemble; Ms. Bley composed all the music and lyrics for this project. It’s possibly her most overtly pop-oriented album, with all eight songs featuring vocals by Soft Machine alumnus Robert Wyatt. The music, by Bley’s standards, is fairly pedestrian if occasionally catchy, though the lyrics are often wryly amusing. So we have songs about failed car motors and a skeptic’s encounter with a flying saucer, and one dedicated to unappreciative audiences titled “Boo to You Too.” Though the band is staffed with several fine jazz musicians, the music has more of a rock or jazz-rock feel, largely due to the spotlight on guitarist Chris Spedding, who evidences slick, if relatively uninteresting, chops. To the extent the songs succeed, Wyatt can take much of the credit. His engagingly hoarse voice is capable of both wrenching sincerity and mordant humor; pieces like “Do Ya?,” where he is asked to tortuously squawk the line “God knows I try!,” would collapse entirely with a less convincing vocalist. The closing cut, “I’m a Mineralist,” is the one that leaves a lasting impression. Conflating geology and minimalism, it includes lines like “Erik Satie gets my rocks off/Cage is a dream/Philip Glass is mineralist to the extreme,” before launching into a note-perfect rendition of some pointedly bland Glassian measures. For Pink Floyd completists, this album might provide a glimpse into an alternate universe of which they were otherwise unaware, but fans of Bley’s earlier masterpieces like Escalator Over the Hill are likely to emerge somewhat disappointed.
