Ron Adelaar is a Dutch-based pianist and composer of neoclassical, meditative piano compositions. Besides that he is A&R manager at Andante Piano, sublabel of Disruptive Records run by his son Ivo Adelaar. Ron had an early introduction to piano music, as he started his career at the age of 13 by playing the organ and piano at several churches in his hometown Amersfoort (The Netherlands), all together with his father Ton Adelaar who played the flute. After that, and now for already 37 years, Ron is a pianist and conductor of a choir in Amersfoort. His passion has always been to create his own contemporary compositions and share it with others. Because of the technical possibilities these days he’s finally able to share his own piano compositions with the rest of the world, all recorded in his home piano studio. Ron’s neoclassical piano compositions contribute to relax, meditate or to maintain concentration and focus during work.

Le rouge et le noir, the pioneering psychological novel by Stendhal published in 1830, has had a number of adaptations on film but surprisingly few treatments in music. This three-act ballet, premiered in 2000, by the Romanian composer Livia Teodorescu-Ciocănea (bon 1959), rectifies that omission in the grand manner. The atmosphere is dark and passionate, as the novel requires, and the musical language reflects the remarkable tradition of Romanian modernism that emerged in the second half of the twentieth century from the music of Enescu – a distinctive soundworld that blends rich timbral colour with deep roots in Romanian folk-music.

New Devices is the 3rd album from Leeds based trio and Mercury Prize nominees Roller Trio. A unique trio, their sound is modern and gritty, pushing sonic boundaries to their limits. Switching the feel of a tune in a heartbeat from edgy improv to anthemic power riffs to reverb-swamped note storms, Roller Trio are powerful and progressive. For this album, the line-up includes Chris Sharkey, a guitarist at the cutting-edge of contemporary guitar improv, alongside James Mainwaring, saxophone & electronics and Luke Reddin-Williams, drums. Their mix of high octane technicality and deceptively catchy tunes has transcended their Jazz heritage, bringing them acclaim from fans and critics alike. Their eponymous debut album was nominated for the 2012 Mercury Prize and the band were also nominated for MOBO’s Best Jazz Act that same year.

Ingmar Bergman (1918- 2007) made fifty films, directed more than 150 theatre productions and wrote several books, but the recurrent thread running through his life was music. He often said that if he hadn’t become a director he would have wished to become a conductor, and went so far as to claim that ‘film and music are almost the same thing. They are means of expression and communication that go beyond human wisdom and that touch a person’s emotional centre.’ Bergman’s interest in classical music became evident early on in his career. Music in Darkness (1948) is about a pianist who loses his sight in a shooting accident, To Joy (1950) features a violinist who dreams of a solo career and Summer Interlude (1951) takes place at the Royal Swedish Opera. He admired all who could perform music, reserving his greatest love for pianists, and concert pianists are portrayed in Hour of the Wolf, Face to Face and Autumn Sonata.

One of Bergman’s favourite Swedish pianists was Roland Pöntinen, who here performs a number of pieces featured in Bergman’s films, by composers including Mozart, Chopin and Schumann. Pöntinen is joined by the Stenhammar Quartet in the second movement of Schumann’s piano quintet, used by Bergman to great effect in the award-winning Fanny and Alexander. Another of the director’s favourite performers, the cellist Torleif Thedéen, also contributes to the project, with the sarabandes from three of Bach’s suites for solo cello.

Ron Carter Golden Striker Trio feat. Mulgrew Miller & Russell Malone – San Sebastian (2013) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

The German In and Out label captured the sold-out performance of the Golden Striker Trio in San Sebastian on the last evening of their 2012 European tour. Bassist Ron Carter re-assembled with pianist Mulgrew Miller and guitarist Russell Malone, who had initially played together on the 2003 studio album The Golden Striker on Blue Note. The trio’s moniker is borrowed from the John Lewis composition from 1960, a fitting name as the slightly introspective brand of chamber jazz is similar to the Modern Jazz Quartet but not quite as restrained. Alongside the John Lewis tune, the five tracks feature two Ron Carter compositions, “Candle Light” and “Saudade,” the standard “My Funny Valentine,” and Luiz Bonfá’s “Samba de Orpheus.” The limited-edition version of the CD also includes a bonus DVD of the concert with a rendition of Oscar Pettiford’s “Laverne Walk,” not available on the CD.

Carl Maria von Weber wrote music that has been admired by composers as diverse as Schumann, Berlioz, Tchaikovsky, Debussy, Ravel and Stravinsky. But in his lifetime he was also recognised as one of the finest pianists of the period, with an exceptional technique and a brilliant gift for improvisation. Especially during the 1810s he toured extensively, and like other composer-pianists he wrote works to use as his personal calling cards, among them the two piano concertos recorded here. They were both composed in 1811-12, but while the First Concerto takes Mozart’s concertos as its model, Piano Concerto No. 2 looks towards Beethoven. This change of direction was probably influenced by the fact that Weber had acquired a score of Beethoven’s recently published “Emperor” Concerto. In any case there are some striking similarities between his concerto and Beethoven’s: the use of identical keys, and the inclusion of a slow, subtly orchestrated Adagio and a closing playful rondo in 6/8.

Chaos For The Fly is the debut solo album from Grian Chatten, vocalist of Dublin’s critically-acclaimed band Fontaines D.C. Rare moments of respite from a relentless touring schedule afforded Chatten the opportunity to start work on something for himself, occupying a completely different headspace from his hugely successful work within Fontaines D.C. Co-produced by the band’s longstanding producer Dan Carey, the album is arguably the most poetic we’ve heard from Chatten. Each song here has a sweep of colour and textures that breathe life into his lucid tales. Over its nine tracks, Chaos For The Fly is a record that takes in all of life’s rich emotions, transporting the listener to a place you not only want to visit, but will find yourself returning to again and again. It’s been a tremendous run for Fontaines D.C., debuting at number one in both the UK and Ireland with their third album, the critically acclaimed and Ivor Novello nominated Skinty Fia, and taking home the BRIT award for International Group of the Year. It followed 2020’s A Hero’s Death, which was nominated for Best Rock Album at the 2021 Grammys, and their debut, 2019’s Dogrel, which was nominated for both the Mercury Music Prize and Ireland’s Choice Music Prize.

On June 14, 1970, the Grateful Dead released Workingman’s Dead, an album that was unlike anything they had ever done, one that showed the world a new side of the Dead. It was clearly the same band as before, but now with a distinctly different sound and approach to the music, pivoting from psychedelic improvisation to folk-rock storytelling for the “everyman,” as the album’s title suggests.

The 3CD set includes the original album with newly remastered sound, plus an unreleased concert recorded on February 21, 1971 at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY. The show was mixed from the 16-track analog master tapes by Jeffrey Norman at Bob Weir’s Marin County TRI Studios and mastered by Grammy® Award-winning engineer, David Glasser.

RFK Stadium, Washington, DC 6/10/73 (Live) – Widely considered one of The Grateful Dead’s seminal performances, and certainly one of the very best of the universally acclaimed 1973 performing year, 6/10/73 is as synonymous with great Grateful Dead concerts as are 2/13/70, 8/27/72, and 5/8/77. There are few shows that deliver the goods to the extent of this concert, with it’s statement-opener of “Morning Dew, ” through lengthy workouts on “Bird Song, ” “Playing In The Band, ” “Here Comes Sunshine, ” “Eyes Of The World, ” and an other-worldly “Dark Star.” Add to this a nearly hour-long encore/third set featuring members of the Allman Brothers Band (with whom the Dead shared the bill at RFK in 1973), and you have not only one of the most unique shows in Grateful Dead history, but also one of the most exciting, inspired and powerful performances of the Dead’s entire career. We’re serving up the complete previously unreleased performance, with Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction, and mastering by Jeffrey Norman.

Unstoppable force, meet immovable object. On Peace Like A River, the heady and hard-hitting new album from Gov’t Mule, that intrinsic, age-old paradox appears to solve itself. Over 12 songs and 70 minutes of music, the Southern rock mainstays changes shape, raises the temperature, and transfers kinetic, heart-pulsing energy from one track to the next in often unexpected and highly rewarding ways. Mule approached this album, with the adventurousness and vitality of band that recognizes freedom is never free and a reckoning isn’t far away.Produced by Warren Haynes and John Paterno and recorded at the Power Station New England, Peace Like A River follows the band’s acclaimed 2021 LP, Heavy Load Blues. It’s remarkable synthesis of songs and musicality (all written by Haynes except for two, full-band penned tracks) that toggles between thundering heavy rock, electric blues, soul, funk, spoken word, English chamber-folk, and psychedelia; enhanced by a fascinating assortment of contributing artists including, Billy Gibbons, Ivan Neville, Ruthie Foster, Billy Bob Thornton, and Celisse.
