Mountain Stage is a two-hour, live music performance radio show staged with a theater audience, produced by West Virginia Public Broadcasting, and distributed by NPR.

Mountain Stage debuted in December 1983 at the Culture Center Theater in Charleston, West Virginia. Since then, we’ve produced well over 1,000 shows at our home and as far away as Glasgow, Scotland and Fairbanks, Alaska. The venues have ranged from The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. to a portable stage in the woods of Pocahontas County, WV.

We are a team sport. Many of the folks who work with us have done so for more than 30 years and most have been here at least 20. Like a family, we’ve seen births and deaths, marriages and divorces, triumphs and tragedies. Stagehands, merch sellers, engineers, band members and producers have all contributed to the growth and evolution of the
show as have audience members, listeners, donors, and underwriters.

Desertshore is Nico’s third solo album, recorded and released in 1970. It was co-produced by John Cale and Joe Boyd. Like its predecessor The Marble Index (HE 68005LP, 2023), it is an avant-garde album with chamber music elements. The back and front covers feature stills from the film La cicatrice interieure by Philippe Garrel, which starred Nico, Garrel and her son Ari Boulogne. A few of the songs from the album were included on the soundtrack of the film.

Nico’s second solo album, 1968’s ‘The Marble Index’, has long been out of print. This reissue includes audio mastered from the original tapes and previously unreleased photos of Nico by Guy Webster. Nico’s haunting vocals predicted the Gothic movement and co-producer and Velvet Underground’s band mate John Cale’s startingly modern classical production ensured ‘The Marble Index’s timeless appeal. The iconic music journalist Lester Bangs wrote, “The Marble Index is the greatest piece of ‘avant-garde classical’, ‘serious’ music of the last half of the 20th century so far,” and the New Yorker recently hailed both records as “austere miracles of will and invention.”

Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp tapped into the frustration of living through the pandemic in 2020 with their well-timed cover of John Lennon’s ‘Isolation’. On the record, Beck’s first studio effort in six years, the artists coax unexpected performances from one another on 11 covers and two originals that touch on everything from Celtic and Motown to John Lennon, the Beach Boys and The Velvet Underground. The cover illustration was done by Jeff’s wife, Sandra and pictures them when they were both 18. Beck explains the album title: ‘When Johnny and I started playing together, it really ignited our youthful spirit and creativity. We would joke about how we felt 18 again, so that just became the album title too’.

Long before the raw power of punk icon Iggy Pop became legend, his first incarnation as Iggy Stooge of proto-punk trailblazers The Stooges roared into being. The essence of punk years before the genre existed, The Stooges’ furious music was a howling, visceral, fuzztone-drenched, and unprecedented vortex of sound, as evidenced on their revolutionary self-titled, John Cale-produced 1969 debut album. Their bracing follow-up, Fun House portrayed their evolution into a fiercer, stronger band with Iggy’s primal vocals and mad brilliance more potent than ever.

In 2017 with How Did I Find Myself Here?, Steve Wynn and his Dream Syndicate returned from a long break after the release of their last album Ghost Stories back in 1988. Spearheading the Paisley Underground scene, the Los Angeles group founded in 1981 mixed influences of the Velvet Underground and Neil Young. As if going back in time, one finds the Californian group as it was thirty years ago, still intact. The guitars are violent but not over-indulgent and the rhythms are perfectly hypnotic. In the spirit of How Did I Find Myself Here?, These Times unleashes all Dream Syndicate’s trademarks. Thrashing rock (The Way In), to sixties Byrds guitars (Bullet Holes), vintage keys and all the archetypal instrumentation that works perfectly with Wynn’s productions can all be found in this rather unexpected album. “When I was writing the songs for the new album I was pretty obsessed with Donuts by J Dilla. I loved the way that he approached record making as a DJ, a crate-digger, a music fan wanting to lay out all of his favorite music, twist and turn the results until he made them into his own. I was messing around with step sequencers, drum machines, loops — anything to take me out of my usual way of writing and try to feel as though I was working on a compilation rather than ‘more of the same.’ You might not automatically put the Dream Syndicate and J Dilla in the same sentence, but I hear that album when I hear our new one.” – Marc Zisman

Amid an apparently-endless series of “returns with a vengeance”, this one in particular will please fans of American Indy rock of the 1980s. Steve Wynn has resuscitated his Dream Syndicate, whose last album to date, Ghost Stories, came out in 1988! At the cutting edge of the Paisley Underground scene, the group, founded in Los Angeles in 1981, brought together the influences of the Velvet Underground and Neil Young. They recorded three other albums: the indispensable The Days Of Wine And Roses in 1982,Medicine Show in 1984 and Out Of The Grey in 1986. They were reformed in 2012 for a series of concerts. Signed by the very fashionable ANTI label, Wynn’s gang returned to the studio for good, to put down How Did I Find Myself Here?.. The rhythm section is of its times (Dennis Duck on drums and Mark Walton on bass); the lead guitar is wielded by Jason Victor, Steve Wynn’s vigorous companion on several of his recent solo efforts. As if time itself had stopped, we find the Californian band’s DNA fully intact. The guitars are violent but not exuberant, and the rhythms are hypnotic: without a doubt, Wynn and his accomplices know how to set off powerful tsunamis of electricity and noise (Out Of My Head) and more nuanced tempests (80 West), with the same efficiency… Finally, How Did I Find Myself Here? comes across like vintage Dream Syndicate, but with a 100% 2017 sound. A sonic upgrade which will enrapture early fans and allow new ones an easy taste of this uncompromising and venomous rock’n’roll.

American art-rock was often stilted and lacking in humor until new wave arrived. This ranks as one of the best debut albums from a rock band. The Cars are filed under rock, but they are closer to power pop than any other genre. Ric Ocasek sounded like a cross between the Raspberries and Television, punk sound with a pop attitude. Liberated by the influence of the Velvet Underground, Roxy Music and punk-era fellow travelers like Blondie and Suicide, the Cars methodically linked hookiness (enough to produce three hit singles and several other FM favorites from this debut album) and at least one raised eyebrow. The result still plays as a rock & roll classic. And if charm wasn’t their aim, the fact is, it’s undeniable. In 2003, the album was ranked number 282 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Garland Jeffreys (born June 29, 1943) is an American singer and songwriter in rock and roll, reggae, blues, and soul music.

Jeffreys is from Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, of African American and Puerto Rican heritage. He majored in art history at Syracuse University, where he met Lou Reed before The Velvet Underground became active. In 1966, Jeffreys began to play in Manhattan nightclubs including Gerde’s Folk City, The Bitter End, Gaslight, Kenny’s Castaways and later Reno Sweeney, where he began to explore racially conscious themes in his work, sometimes utilizing blackface masks and a rag doll named Ramon in performance. Jeffreys played guitar on John Cale’s 1969 debut solo album Vintage Violence and contributed the song “Fairweather Friend”. In 1969 he founded Grinder’s Switch with Woodstock-area musicians including pianist Stan Szelest, guitarist Ernie Corallo, and percussionist Sandy Konikoff. Lewis Merenstein, producer of Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks, produced this one album before the band dissolved in 1970.

Sophia Kennedy’s music sometimes sounds like a soundtrack to world to disintegrating, hanging on by a thread of memories, it combines the glamour and the morbid charm of tin pan alley show tunes from the 1960s or 70s and yet it fully embraces the deconstructed modernism of club music. The songs can change the atmosphere in a split second, impressively illustrated by last year’s single “Orange Tic Tac” which switched between threatening gloomy trap beats and soothing crooner melodies. Her sophomore album Monsters, to be released May 7th on City Slang, is full of plot twists, moments of prettiness dashed with paranoia. The title itself, is a self-ironic, comic-like commentary of being an artist trying to tame own creations like “monsters” gone wild but also a nod to a generally threatening tension in the world. Monsters is pop music teetering on the verge of ruin but it’s not a eulogy, it’s a Tear Down Party!

Dot Allison returns with a new solo album, Consciousology. After over a decade away, the former One Dove singer and songwriter broke cover in 2021 with Heart-Shaped Scars and this new album follows just two years later, as she hits a purple patch of songwriting. It’s also her first full release for Sonic Cathedral after contributing to Mark Peters’ acclaimed Red Sunset Dreams last year. Consciousology finds multi-instrumentalist Dot joined by the London Contemporary Orchestra, her new labelmate Andy Bell from Ride, who plays guitar on two tracks, and Hannah Peel, who is responsible for some of the string arrangements with both the LCO and a stellar group of Scottish string players. It expands on the styles and themes of the previous album, all while pushing everything just that little bit further – the songs sound bigger, more avant-garde and experimental and, occasionally, properly out-there and psychedelic.
