This excellent Columbia album was recorded less than a year after Dexter Gordon’s well-publicized tour of the United States following a dozen years spent living in Europe. With assistance from such other major players as trumpeters Woody Shaw and Benny Bailey, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson sounds in superlative form on Woody Shaw’s “The Moontrane,” four standards, and his own “Fried Bananas.” In addition to the original program (which features Dexter with an all-star tentet), the 1997 CD reissue adds two 1979 features for vocalese singer Eddie Jefferson (“Diggin’ It” and “It’s Only a Paper Moon”) that were originally released on Gordon’s Great Encounters; trumpeter Shaw and trombonist Curtis Fuller co-star with Gordon. An excellent acquisition. – Scott Yanow

Annie Ross is a British-American singer and actress, best known as a member of the jazz vocal trio Lambert, Hendricks & Ross. On this set Annie Ross sits in with saxophonist Pony Poindexter’s band during a 1966 concert in Frankfurt, Germany, with delightful results. The sound is impeccable, as the audience is not at all audible during most of the performances, though it is clear from the audio that this is not a studio album disguised as a live one.

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Ubuntu Music

Leading British jazz label Ubuntu Music’s latest upcoming offering is a celebration of the multi-cultural melting pot that is London’s vibrant jazz scene. With a history spanning Greece, the USA, and the UK, saxophonist Vasilis Xenopoulos and pianist Paul Edis’ upcoming record is a musical reflection of the paths and relationships their lives in music have led them on.

Vasilis and Paul began playing together 20 years ago when both relocated to West London to study. Originally from Greece, Xenopoulos had just finished studying at Berklee College in the US, while Edis had moved South from the Northeast of England.

In the intervening years, they’ve played numerous shows together, releasing their debut album ‘A Narrow Escape’ in 2016 to critical acclaim. With Joel Barford (drums) and Adam King (double bass), their latest recording features original music inspired by the theme of ‘home’… home in this sense not only represents the many places they’ve both lived, but also the people they’ve known along the way.

The duo describe the music on Feels Like Home: “Rooted in the jazz tradition, this is music that’s eclectic, groove based and fundamentally melodic. Including elements of hard bop, latin jazz, gospel and even folk, there are nods to Dexter Gordon, Stanley Turrentine, John Coltrane, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Bill Evans, Brad Mehldau, McCoy Tyner and more besides. This is honest music full of emotions, inspired and unified around the central theme of ‘home’.”

He has stretched his musical capabilities far into the ranges of composition and arranging, making his music a confluence of jazz and classical sounds. His album Celebration showcases Reid’s command as an instrumentalist and writer, as his Out Front Trio performs with and without the Sirius Quartet.

Since finishing second to Joshua Redman in the Thelonious Monk Institute’s tenor sax competition, Eric Alexander has built an impressive discography as a leader, while also drawing a lot of attention in both the U.S. and Japan. This Venus release, recorded in 2005 and one of the last sessions by pianist John Hicks (who died just over a year later), primarily focuses on standards, with the exception of Hicks’ tense hard bop vehicle ‘Avotcja.’ A loping treatment of ‘Sunday in New York’ is a solid opener, conveying the image of a brisk walk in Central Park on a cool autumn day.

Jazz giants from six European countries coalesce to play wide-open music. One of Norway’s greatest jazz singers, Karin Krog has worked and recorded with Jan Garbarek and Clare Fischer. English multi-saxophonist John Surman and Krog have jointly won two Norwegian Grammys. Surman has played with Mike Westbrook’s Orchestra and John McLaughlin, as well as recorded a slew of records on the prestigious ECM label. Trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff was simply Germany’s most valuable jazz export and a major innovator on the instrument. Belgium pianist Francy Boland arranged for Sarah Vaughan and Count Basie, and co-led one of the great big bands of the 60’s. Danish bassist Niels H. O. Pederson received an American Grammy with the Oscar Peterson trio, played with Dexter Gordon and toured with Bill Evans. Swiss drummer Daniel Humair made his name in Paris, playing with musicians ranging from Jim Hall to Anthony Braxton. Maiden Voyage features Krog and the two horns; on Triple Play the pianist and bass take the solos. Rainy Day has Krog and Pederson in duo. Winter Song features Mangelsdorff’s buttery sound melting the snow and Surman’s heated baritone sax solo. There’s a freewheeling Nature Boy and a quirky Hello Thursday. Open Space leaves lots of room for free play; Ryoan-Ji is a Zen-like meditation on the possibilities of sound. A tantalizing album signifying that great jazz is universal.
