Modern Life Is Rubbish is the second studio album by the English alternative rock band Blur, released in May 1993. Although their debut album Leisure (1991) had been commercially successful, Blur faced a severe media backlash soon after its release, and fell out of public favour. After the group returned from an unsuccessful tour of the United States, poorly received live performances and the rising popularity of rival band Suede further diminished Blur’s status in the UK.

Under threat of being dropped by Food Records, for their next album Blur underwent an image makeover championed by frontman Damon Albarn. The band incorporated influences from traditional British guitar pop groups such as the Kinks and the Small Faces, and the resulting sound was melodic and lushly produced, featuring brass, woodwind and backing vocalists. Albarn’s lyrics on Modern Life Is Rubbish use “poignant humour and Ray Davies characterisation to investigate the dreams, traditions and prejudices of suburban England”, according to writer David Cavanagh.

Modern Life Is Rubbish was a moderate chart success in the UK; the album peaked at number 15, while the singles taken from the album charted in the Top 30. Applauded by the music press, the album’s Anglocentric rhetoric rejuvenated the group’s fortunes after their post-Leisure slump. Modern Life Is Rubbish is regarded as one of the defining releases of the Britpop scene, and its chart-topping follow-ups—Parklife and The Great Escape—saw Blur emerge as one of Britain’s leading pop acts.

Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp tapped into the frustration of living through the pandemic in 2020 with their well-timed cover of John Lennon’s ‘Isolation’. On the record, Beck’s first studio effort in six years, the artists coax unexpected performances from one another on 11 covers and two originals that touch on everything from Celtic and Motown to John Lennon, the Beach Boys and The Velvet Underground. The cover illustration was done by Jeff’s wife, Sandra and pictures them when they were both 18. Beck explains the album title: ‘When Johnny and I started playing together, it really ignited our youthful spirit and creativity. We would joke about how we felt 18 again, so that just became the album title too’.

In 2002, Dylan dedicated volume 5 of his Bootleg Series to his famous Rolling Thunder Revue, his legendary tour from Autumn 1975/Spring 1976, which until then had only been featured on the album Hard Rain. A 57-concert adventure that followed the release of one of his best albums, Blood On the Tracks, on which he collaborated with his ex Joan Baez, Roger McGuinn, Joni Mitchell, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Kinky Friedman, Bob Neuwirth, T-Bone Burnett, David Bowie’s guitarist Mick Ronson and violinist Scarlet Rivera. It was an exceptional tour, partly because of how unconventional it was in the writer’s career. The songs of Dylan (who was 34 and in an emotionally chaotic time in his life) found an original style, blending folk tradition (the spirit of Woody Guthrie prevails throughout), an informal “friendly” atmosphere, and a modern spirit thanks in part to Ronson’s glam guitar. Moreover, the Zim transformed his several-month tour into a rock circus where the prevailing real fake artistic chaos took on the form of supreme art.

There is a way a voice can cut through the fascia of reality, cleaving through habit into the raw nerve of experience. Nika Roza Danilova, the singer, songwriter, and producer who since 2009 has released music as Zola Jesus, wields a voice that does that. When you hear it, it is like you are being summoned to a place that’s already wrapped inside you but obscured from conscious experience. This place has been buried because it tends to hold pain, but it’s also a gift, because once it’s opened, once you’re inside of it, it can show you the truth. Zola Jesus’s new album, Arkhon, finds new ways of loosing this submerged, stalled pain.

This unique and modern approach of music, enhanced by the ardour and dexterity of the musicians that surround him, makes Uriel Herman one of the most exciting pianists of the current scene. Rejecting the abrasive guitars of their punk-era contemporaries in favor of lushly romantic synthesizers, Ultravox emerged as one of the primary influences on the British electro-pop movement of the early ’80s. Formed in London in 1974, the group – originally dubbed Ultravox! – was led by vocalist and keyboardist John Foxx (born Dennis Leigh), whose interest in synths and cutting-edge technology began during his school years. With an initial lineup consisting of bassist Chris Cross, keyboardist/violinist Billy Currie, guitarist Steve Shears, and drummer Warren Cann, their obvious affection for the glam rock sound of David Bowie and Roxy Music brought them little respect from audiences caught up in the growing fervor of punk, but in 1977 Island Records signed the quintet anyway, with Brian Eno agreeing to produce the band’s self-titled debut LP. After scoring a minor U.K. hit with the single “My Sex,” Ultravox returned later that year with Ha! Ha! Ha!; sales were minimal, however, and Shears soon exited, replaced by guitarist Robin Simon. A third LP, 1978’s Systems of Romance, was recorded in Germany with renowned producer Conrad Plank, but it too failed commercially. Island soon dropped the band, at which time both Foxx and Simon quit, the former mounting a solo career and the latter joining Magazine. At that point the remaining members of Ultravox tapped singer/guitarist Midge Ure, an alumnus of Slik as well as Glen Matlock’s Rich Kids; upon signing to Chrysalis, the new lineup recorded Vienna, scoring a surprise smash hit with the single “Sleepwalk,” which reached the number two spot on the U.K. pop charts in 1981 and pushed the LP into the Top Five. The album’s title track also fared well, peaking at number two on the charts and remaining there for several weeks. After 1981’s Rage in Eden, Ultravox teamed with legendary producer George Martin for 1983’s Quartet; their most successful LP in the otherwise impenetrable American market, it launched the minor hit “Reap the Wild Wind.” Upon completing 1984’s Lament, Warren Cann left Ultravox to forge a solo career. The remaining members, after adding Big Country’s Mark Brzezicki, resurfaced with U-Vox in 1986 before going their separate ways. Currie and Simon re-formed the band in 1993, adding vocalist Marcus O’Higgins; three years later, they released the lackluster Ingenuity with Sam Blue on lead vocals. The album marked the group’s final studio release. – Jason Ankeny

Best known for his Disintegration Loops series of albums from the early 00s, New York-based avant-garde composer William Basinski sculpts samples, drones and feedback loops into soundscapes rich in melancholic atmosphere. The two tracks on his 23rd album include a eulogy to David Bowie, For David Robert Jones, that’s rather less literal than Lady Gaga’s Grammys tribute and all the more powerful for it. Its eerily distorted saxophone, a nod to Low, takes six minutes to surface, but then takes centre stage, a mournful motif subtly evolving over the next quarter of an hour. The multilayered title track, meanwhile, is a less immediate drone, but proves hypnotic well within its 17-minute timeframe.

Throughout the 1980s, Kim had numerous hits, first on RAK Records (with the help of father Marty and brother Ricky) and later on MCA (when she started writing songs herself and toured with Michael Jackson and David Bowie).

After seven years away from the recording studio, Wolf Parade have picked up where they left off, sounding confident and full-bodied on their fourth studio effort, 2017’s Cry Cry Cry. As before, Wolf Parade approach indie rock with the sense of drama of a prog rock band, reinforced by the operatic quaver of Spencer Krug’s vocal work and the grand ambitions of the keyboards by Krug and Dante DeCaro. Despite their hiatus, Wolf Parade sound fresh and invigorated on these 11 songs, with the healthy snap of Arlen Thompson’s drumming keeping the proceedings lively even when the group slinks into a languid mood on “Flies on the Sun” or aims for a moody effect on “Lazarus Online.” (DeCaro’s bass work is more subtle in the mix, but no less strong in execution.) While the group references a few of the major events that took place since Wolf Parade last made an album — the death of David Bowie on “Valley Boy” and the passing of Leonard Cohen just as Donald Trump was rising to power in “You’re Dreaming” — most of the time the group seems to be looking inward, albeit with an intelligence and sense of purpose that prevents the material from seeming solipsistic. Dan Boeckner’s guitar is often dwarfed in the mix by the keyboards, but he adds a crunchy texture that lends an added weight and heft to these songs. And the production by John Goodmanson is an ideal match for the material, giving these performances the right amount of gravity without making this music sound swollen or pompous. Feeling strong and fit after their layoff, Wolf Parade don’t sound like a band convinced they have something to prove on Cry Cry Cry — it quickly announces that they’re as capable and creative as ever, and the finished product is as strong as anything they’ve released to date.
