Gasoline Alley follows the same formula of Rod Stewart’s first album, intercutting contemporary covers with slightly older rock & roll and folk classics and originals written in the same vein. The difference is in execution. Stewart sounds more confident, claiming Elton John’s “Country Comfort,” the Small Faces’ “My Way of Giving,” and the Rolling Stones’ version of “It’s All Over Now” with a ragged, laddish charm. Like its predecessor, nearly all of Gasoline Alley is played on acoustic instruments — Stewart treats rock & roll songs like folk songs, reinterpreting them in individual, unpredictable ways. For instance, “It’s All Over Now” becomes a shambling, loose-limbed ramble instead of a tight R&B/blues groove, and “Cut Across Shorty” is based around a howling, Mideastern violin instead of a rockabilly riff. Of course, being a rocker at heart, Stewart doesn’t let these songs become limp acoustic numbers — these rock harder than any fuzz-guitar workout. The drums crash and bang, the acoustic guitars are pounded with a vengeance — it’s a wild, careening sound that is positively joyous with its abandon. And on the slow songs, Stewart is nuanced and affecting — his interpretation of Bob Dylan’s “Only a Hobo” is one of the finest Dylan covers, while the original title track is a vivid, loving tribute to his adolescence. And that spirit is carried throughout Gasoline Alley. It’s an album that celebrates tradition while moving it into the present and never once does it disown the past.

Writing songs and bringing them to life is usually a two-person job. While hardcore Bob Dylan fans will argue he’s the best singer of his songs, many others, including Bettye LaVette, have sung them better. The gritty soul vocalist has built a career interpreting other songwriters and now, after giving her all to collections of tunes by Dylan and the various artists of the British Invasion, LaVette has turned her interpretive gifts to the work of Randall Bramblett. Bramblett had a pair of unjustly ignored solo records in the ’70s, but has been on something of a comeback since hooking up with New West records in the early aughts. Comebacks have also become LaVette’s specialty. Since cutting her first record in 1962 (which made it onto the R&B charts) at age 16, LaVette has toured with James Brown, made a great record in Muscle Shoals that was shelved for over 35 years, and even had a disco hit.

Seattle-born musician Ayron Jones is carrying the torch for rock `n’ roll. With a spark that was first lit as a young person in the Emerald City, he was cultivating the light even when no one said he could. Jones, who was abandoned as a child by his parents, grew up with his aunt, teaching himself guitar and grinding in Seattle for over a decade. Then, in a flicker, he became one of the only Black solo artists to earn the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Rock Chart, thanks to his hit single ‘Mercy’- a cut from his critically acclaimed 2021 major label debut, Child Of The State. This year, Jones’ history-making career continues with his sophomore LP, Chronicles of the Kid. With each track, the legend of the determined 2022 iHeartRadio-nominated artist grows. But Jones, a husband and father of four, is not afraid to share the intricacies of his remarkable movie script-like origin story. From poverty to power, he is willing to spotlight the blueprint that has made him ‘one of the biggest names in the genre’ (American Songwriter). Today, after playing stages with The Rolling Stones, Guns `N’ Roses, B.B. King, Jeff Beck, Shinedown, Run DMC, Public Enemy, Sir Mix-a-Lot and more, Jones stands tall in the lineage of guitar-playing virtuosos like Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, his name emblazoned with the greats. Now, the songwriter is leading the way as the luminous, burning sound of a new generation.

Though among the most masterful of all popular musicians, bluegrass artists have had difficulty crossing over to a larger audience. Twenty years after Alison Krauss and her angelic voice broke through the pickin’ and grinnin’ ceiling with her cover of “Baby, Now That I’ve Found You,” the massively talented Molly Tuttle is poised to do the same. After an evolution that included the EP, Rise, and pair of LPs—When You’re Ready and …but i’d rather be with you (the latter serving notice of her ambitions with covers of FKA Twigs, Harry Styles and The Rolling Stones), Tuttle has made her momentous Nonesuch label debut with Crooked Tree. Tuttle aims for a sweet spot that successfully crosses bluegrass instrumental prowess with pop music appeal; she nails it from the first note. This once-in-a-generation talent and repeat winner of the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Guitar Player of the Year award is also a gifted singer and, as heard here, an increasingly accomplished songwriter. Recorded at Ocean Way Studio B in Nashville, Crooked Tree was produced by dobro player Jerry Douglas—once Krauss’ producer of choice—who also adds his instrumental voice throughout. Other names on the well-chosen guest list include Margo Price, Viktor Krauss, and Gillian Welch. As a songwriter, Tuttle’s focuses on the wonders of the natural environment and its organic scale of justice. In the title track, perfect trees come under the ax which “turned them into toothpicks and twenty dollar bills,” but the crooked trees which “won’t fit into the mill machine” are left “to grow wild and free.” Tuttle rolls through a North American travelog in “Big Backyard” (which features Old Crow Medicine Show): “Now my backyard is a redwood forest/ And yours is a rocky shore in New England/ Her backyard is the streets of New York/ And his is the hum of the LA freeway.” The banjo-dobro-fiddle number “Flatland Girl,” a duet with Price, has the feel of a folk music classic. She’s also become an artful storyteller whether treading the Copperhead Road in “Dooley’s Farm” the oft-told tale of a pot farmer who “Got his schoolin’ out in Vietnam” and who is eventually caught, but whose granddaughter carries on “growing green,” or sharing the tale of “a woman who can’t trust a man in need” in the frightening “The River Knows.” An eloquent album by a flourishing virtuoso. – Robert Baird

Minco Eggersman and Theodoor Borger started collaborating years ago. For this project they’re inviting guest musicians to find the pure essence of music with them. They invited Norwegian trumpet player Mathias Eick for their first album UNIFONY. Together, they wander off the beaten track and rediscover purity by experimenting. They don’t compose music based on musical notes but they’re using carefully crafted layered sounds instead. The album has been mixed by the British studio engineer Phill Brown. He has worked with a wide range of artists like Brian Eno, Pink Floyd, David Bowie & The Rolling Stones. To top it off, the album has been mastered by none other than 11x Grammy Award winning mastering engineer Bob Ludwig. He has worked with artists like Radiohead, Nirvana, Paul McCartney, Madonna and many, many others.
