Blue is inspired by water in its various forms. I chose to write the album for Beth & Flo after discovering their ability to play brilliantly together in a vast array of styles.

One of the earliest sketches I wrote for the album was the first movement of Sea Dances. I was inspired after seeing a short film online about the puffer fish and started to compose to the film, scoring the music to match the movements of the small fish. At the other end of the spectrum in terms of size is the blue whale, whose elegant motion I aimed to evoke in ‘Graceful giants’.

No-No Boy – Empire Electric (2023) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 39:22 minutes | 401 MB | Genre: Indie Folk
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Smithsonian Folkways Recordings

There are seemingly infinite layers of meaning to be found in No-No Boy’s third album, Empire Electric. You can listen closely to singer-songwriter Julian Saporiti’s lyrics, which juxtapose true stories of struggle from throughout Asia and its diaspora with Saporiti’s own reckoning with intergenerational trauma. You could also let the majesty of Saporiti’s songcraft wash over you, his captivating melodies cloaking those themes in a veneer of hope and ecstasy. But the deepest storytelling happens at the sonic level, as sounds drawn from across the Eastern hemisphere mingle freely with distinctly American instrumentation – banjo and koto, lap-steel and guzheng – while electronically manipulated field recordings of rushing water, chirping birds and other natural sounds ground us in the now. Adventurous and affecting, Empire Electric offers a vision for a new kind of folk music, one that tells unorthodox stories through unorthodox means and finds new pathways through our tangled roots.

No Fixed Point In Space, the third full-length album by Jack Cooper’s Modern Nature, takes the palette of sound and themes that were honed on 2021’s Island Of Noise and launches them into an expansive world of openness and vivid technicolour. It’s a music that hasn’t been heard before; as melodic as anything Cooper has produced but framed by rhythms and instrumentation that reflect the chaos, unpredictability and colour of the natural world.

Minetti Quartet – Berg, Shostakovich & Ligeti: String Quartets (2023) [Official Digital Download 24bit/48kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/48 kHz | Time – 53:03 minutes | 503 MB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © haenssler CLASSIC

Dmitri Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 7 lasts no more than twelve minutes. The composer wrote it in March 1960 and dedicated it to his first wife Nina Vasilyevna Varzar – or rather, to her memory, for she had died five years earlier of an insidious form of cancer; suddenly, and without warning. It is a very personal work, one that is close to the composer’s heart, for here Shostakovich breaks the strict sequence of keys he imposed on himself. Alban Berg’s String Quartet No.1 has 2 movements, bears the opus number 3, and is nevertheless considered the composer’s first autonomous work, even though the composer himself points out that he received it personally from Schönberg. An homage to Arnold Schönberg, then, who propelled his pupil into an independent career with this journeyman piece? Or is it really a declaration of love? While working on his Opus 3, Alban has already been hopelessly in love with Helene for a long while. Georg Alexander, alias György Sandor Ligeti, completed his first string quartet in 1954, when he was still living in Budapest at the age of thirty-one and recently divorced. For the second time! His first marriage, to his childhood sweetheart Brigitte, lasted only three years, and the second, to the psychology student Veronika Spitz, was entered into for purely political reasons. In 1952, Veronika, who came from a family of former factory owners, was in danger of being deported to a labour camp by the communist regime in Hungary as a representative of the bourgeoisie, and it was only by getting married to Ligeti that a semblance of protection could be afforded to her. As soon as the danger is averted following the death of Stalin, they divorce as agreed.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/48 kHz | Time – 39:01 minutes | 397 MB | Genre: New Age, Modern Classical, Ambient
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Ghostly International

Through evocative, emotionally resonant music, Goodbye, Hotel Arkada, the new LP from American harpist and composer Mary Lattimore, speaks not just for its beloved namesake — a hotel in Croatia facing renovation — but for a universal loss that is shared. Six sprawling pieces shaped by change; nothing will ever be the same, and here, the artist, evolving in synthesis, celebrates and mourns the tragedy and beauty of the ephemeral, all that is lived and lost to time. Documented and edited in uncharacteristically measured sessions over the course of two years, the material remains rooted in improvisation while glistening as the most refined and robust in Lattimore’s decade-long catalog. It finds her communing with friends, contemporaries, and longtime influences, in full stride yet slowing down to nurture songs in new ways. The cast includes Lol Tolhurst (The Cure), Meg Baird, Rachel Goswell (Slowdive), Roy Montgomery, Samara Lubelski, and Walt McClements.

The fame and legacy of Maria Callas are nearly unsurpassed in the modern history of opera. Her fame has transcended the usual boundaries of classical music, and she has been the inspiration for several movies as well as the successful Broadway play “Master Class.” Her extensive catalogue of recordings remains among the most coveted and controversial for both her fans and detractors. Though American by birth, Callas (born Maria Anne Sofia Cecilia Kalogeropoulos) was born of Greek parents, and at age 13 her mother took her back to Greece because of financial difficulties caused by the Great Depression.

“I saw a literal manifestation of the sacred feminine, and had this profound sense that I was meant to embody it,” recalls celebrated singer-songwriter Lindsay Lou after journeying through a hallucinogenic ritual that would inform the way she processed waves of grief in the sea of change ahead of her. The loss of her grandmother, the end of her marriage, and the overwhelming turmoil of the last few years found the Nashville-based artist on a spiritual journey of self-knowledge and healing with this gift from the mystic swirl. On her new album Queen of Time (due September 29th from Kill Rock Stars), Lou explores that quest across ten tracks of tender, heartbreakingly beautiful music. Featuring a gamut of guests including GRAMMY® Award-winners Billy Strings and Jerry Douglas, Queen of Time celebrates love and loss, but above all, the art of living as an unattainably—a vibrant, powerful woman who can share herself with the world, and yet define a mighty sense of inner self as well.

LINDA WOODSON is a US singer songwriter with a penchant for soulful, lounge jazz. She’s been making music since 2006 and she’s just released her fourth album, ‘Come A Little Closer’. The paucity of her releases is probably down to the fact that Ms Woodson also has another ”career”; she’s a fully qualified dermatologist!

The new 8 tracker is named for Linda’s version of the Broadway show tune and easy to hear why its name’s out there. It’s a big production (gorgeous strings) and showcases the purity of the singer’s voice. The album’s other covers are the Latino ‘La Costa’ (an Aziza Miller song best known in its Natalie Cole version) and ‘Stolen Moments’ (a jazz standard written by Oliver Nelson, to which Linda has added lyrics).

Adroit jazz guitar, prog rock fantasia, and Japanese environmental music all rest comfortably behind Leo Takami’s Next Door. The follow up to the acclaimed Felis Catus & Silence, Next Door finds Takami ruminating on passages — of time, seasons, consciousness. Through music, Leo contemplates daily events and finds beauty in ordinary moments. He also seems to be questioning the value of being stuck in the world, allowing his mind to wander towards something beyond it. His music is earnest, deeply personal and introspective, and is sort of akin to Rousseau’s Reveries of the Solitary Walker or Kenji Miyazawa’s Night on the Galactic Railroad.

‘Swimmer’ is a tour of the darkest time in their lives. But it is not a dark record. Named for the feeling of suspension and upendedness that characterized this period, it is the story of deep-rooted companionship strengthened by pain and loss. These songs carried Tennis through grief. It is them at our most vulnerable, so they kept a small footprint, recording everything themselves in their home studio. Tennis sound fresh as ever on lead track ‘Runner’, a romantic, groovy synth explosion that puts Moore’s soprano on full display.

Tenille Townes – The Lemonade Stand (2020) [Official Digital Download 24bit/48kHz]

Tenille Townes – The Lemonade Stand (2020)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/48 kHz | Time – 45:09 minutes | 562 MB | Genre: Country
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Columbia Nashville

Tenille Townes is a country-music outsider, and her major-label debut is better for it. Like fellow Canadian Shania Twain, Townes isn’t afraid to embrace pop. The shimmering “Holding Out for the One” sounds like a Robyn song, while “White Horse”—all needling guitar and spirited handclaps—channels Duffy; both are primed for a crossover. “Lighthouse” (as in, “I’ll be your lighthouse”) and “Jersey on the Wall (I’m Just Asking)”—about a high-school star athlete killed in a car crash and memorialized via a jersey hanging on a gym wall—are tailor made for a heart-tugging TV commercial. Townes’ voice is the star here: tender but with jazz-siren depth, full of charming quirks and not trying to be traditionally pretty. She can party (the uplifting “Come as You Are”), do campfire twang (“Where You Are”) and be thought-provoking (breakout single “Somebody’s Daughter” imagines how homeless girls got that way). And when, on “I Kept the Roses,” Townes goes retro—her funny-valentine voice soaring alongside Chet Atkins-style guitar like some old-timey radio transmission—she proves she can also surprise. – Shelly Ridenour

Temples – Volcano (2017) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

Temples – Volcano (2017)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 48:59 minutes | 578 MB | Genre: Psychedelic Rock, Indie Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Heavenly Recordings

With their first album, Sun Structures, Temples tapped into the essence of what makes psychedelic pop so enchanting. The swirling sonic textures filled with chiming guitars and booming basslines, the trippy arrangements and moody melodies…they combined into an aural experience on par with the best psych pop. When it came time to record their second album, Volcano, the band made some changes. This time James Bagshaw split the writing duties with the rest of the band, they moved to a bigger room in his house to record, and they added synthesizers to the array of instruments. The biggest shift isn’t anything tangible; it’s more in the tone and outlook of the record. Sun Structures had the feel of a band whose members were stuck deep in their own heads, making music that echoed the bands they loved. Volcano sounds like an album made to be played on a big stage at an outdoor festival. The sounds have been simplified, the choruses pumped up, and the vocals stripped of the reverb haze they were buried in. The arrangements are still fully colored-in, but they are sharper and less swathed in psych pop mystery. Where a track like Sun Structures’ “Shelter Song” enveloped the listener in a murky, entrancing embrace that felt personal and somewhat secret, the songs on Volcano are destined to be sung along to at top volume by strangers in a field. That’s not an intrinsically bad thing, but it does mean that listening to Volcano is a very different kind of experience. The synthesizers on the opening track, “Certainty,” see to that right away, and the coldness that they bring to the mix is in direct contrast with the expansive 12-string electric guitar sound that dominated Sun Structures. That being said, there are still many good things to be found on Volcano. The band still has a way with a hook — the synth parts on “Certainty” are liable to be an unshakeable earworm after one spin — and the songs occasionally take flight on waves of synths and guitars, especially on the back half of the record when the band gets a second wind. “Open Air” and “In My Pocket” have the uptempo strum and strut the Cure had at their stadium rock peak during the late ’80s, “Mystery of Pop” suggests what Ratatat might have sounded like if they were huge Left Banke fans, and “Roman God-like Man” has a nicely chugging rhythm that bursts into some sweet harmony guitar leads. These tracks don’t sound much like Sun Structures either, but thanks to the injection of energy and drive, they turn out better than some of the leaden tracks that weigh down the album’s first half. It makes for a disjointed record that’s definitely not Sun Structures II, but something transitional instead. Fans of the first album may be disappointed by the changes, especially since the band takes most of the psych out of its pop. Those who stick around will find that Volcano is a pretty good modern pop record. ~ Tim Sendra

We wanted to create something special. A record which could be listened to in one go, from start to finish, a listening experience that is becoming increasingly rare. So as well as a host of full Beyond The Wizards Sleeve re-animations here, there are interludes, ambience, ebb and flow…each section flowing into a bigger piece. We tried many things along the way: spoken word sections, days out collecting field recordings, yet ended up letting the original songs and their beautiful arrangements and melodies guide us. There is so much happening under the surface of Sun Structures, and deep within each track, it was a pleasure to dive in and see what we could find. it inspired us to pick up our guitars, plug in our synthesisers and add some wizardry on top. Enjoy this trip. And it is a trip. Sun Structures was initially released in February and is one of the best selling releases of 2014 so far. The 12-track album, self-produced by the band’s James Bagshaw, has been a massive worldwide success.
