The follow up to 2013’s critically lauded ‘Cerulean Salt’, ‘Ivy Tripp’ drifts confidently from its predecessor and displays a more informed and powerful recognition of where Katie Crutchfield (Waxahatchee) currently finds herself. The previous themes of loss of youth and coming of age have been replaced with self control and sheer honesty; “My life has changed a lot in the last two years, and it’s been hard for me to process my feelings other than by writing songs,” says Crutchfield. “I think a running theme [of Ivy Tripp] is steadying yourself on shaky ground and reminding yourself that you have control in situations that seem overwhelming.”

Recorded and engineered by Kyle Gilbride of Wherever Audio at Crutchfield’s home on New York’s Long Island – with drums recorded in the gym of a local elementary school – Ivy Tripp presents a more developed and grown up version of Waxahatchee; “The title Ivy Tripp is really just a term I made up for directionless-ness, specifically of the 20-something, 30-something, 40-something of today, lacking regard for the complaisant life path of our parents and grandparents. I have thought of it like this: Cerulean Salt is a solid and Ivy Tripp is a gas.

My Head Is An Animal (10th Anniversary Edition) will feature four tracks that were not on the 2012 U.S. release, including two never-before-released songs: “Phantom” and “Sugar In A Bowl.”

“It’s been 10 years since the original edition of MHIAA was released in Iceland and because of that we wanted to do something special so we’re releasing a 10th anniversary edition of the album as well as performing some fun live, intimate anniversary shows from Iceland from the venue where we played our first album release party ever,” the band said in a statement.

While “Phantom” and “Sugar In A Bowl” are newly recorded songs, they are not new to the band. “Phantom” was first performed by Of Monsters and Men in 2010 at the renowned Músíktilraunir music competition. It was one of the two songs performed when they took home first place in the competition helping to jumpstart their career. The album features another unreleased track entitled “Sugar In A Bowl”—also composed and conceptualized over a decade ago but never recorded.

Arve Henriksen is a classically trained musician whose ethereal, Japanese-influenced trumpet playing has literally placed him in a league of his own. He was born in Stranda, Norway, and educated at the Trondheim Conservatory. His interest in minimalist Japanese music went on to have a profound effect on his trumpet playing and his music career. Henriksen went on to collaborate with numerous musicians on avant-garde, minimalist, and Eastern-influenced music, working with artists such as Anders Jormin, Edward Vesala, and the Source, before striking out on his own with 2001’s Sakuteiki. He is also the trumpter of the improvisational jazz terror group Supersilent.

Archie Shepp has long established a reputation as a fiery avant-garde jazz stylist, though he is remarkably restrained in this collection of ballads recorded in 2001. The rhapsodic songs help restrain him somewhat, along with the presence of the terrific rhythm section, consisting of pianist Harold Mabern, bassist George Mraz, and drummer Billy Drummond.

Anonymous 4 – Marie et Marion (2014) [Official Digital Download 24bit/88,2kHz]

Many listeners have gotten their introduction to medieval music through the American vocal quartet Anonymous 4, which has a knack for performances that are insightful, sensuous, and apt at putting the concerns of the music into a contemporary settings. They remain productive after several personnel changes and two decades of recordings, several of which have performed strongly on classical sales charts. Marie et Marion is something of a sequel to the group’s 1994 release Love’s Illusion, which contained music on the theme of courtly love from a manuscript collection known as the Montpellier Codex. It was collected, around 1300, in Paris, not Montpellier, and it was, as far as it is possible to know at this late date, state-of-the-art stuff at the time. Marie et Marion focuses on a specific aspect of this repertory: the connections between sacred and secular polyphony at a time very close to the dawn of the latter. The two titular figures are the Virgin Mary and a shepherdess named Marion, the same one who appears in the earliest known work with a named composer, Adam de la Halle’s Jeu de Robin et Marion, or Play of Robin and Marion. In that piece she rejects the amorous advances of the shepherd Robin, and here too she is, like Mary, rather unattainable. The point is that medieval musicians did not think of the sacred and secular spheres as firmly separated the way modern ones do. They could even, as a couple of pieces in the final “Marie-Marion” section of the program, be put together in the same piece, with sacred and secular texts going on at the same time (the use of multiple texts is characteristic of this music), and the foundational “tenors” of all the polyphonic pieces come from the realm of chant. This is a profitable listen either for the delicious sounds of the singers’ voices clashing in the linear harmonies of the music, or for an introduction to the polytextual motet and chanson around 1300, or both.

George Frideric Handel arrived in England towards the end of 1710, encouraged by a group of music lovers excited by the extraordinary success he had achieved with his opera Agrippina in Venice. At the beginning of the 18th century, London was a very prosperous city in need of talent to modernize and revitalize its theatrical performances, and the German musician, who was then at the service of the Elector of Hanover (who would soon be crowned King of Great Britain), was the ideal candidate.

For many years, Handel was the most acclaimed composer of Italian opera in London, premiering at a rate of one show a year, and managing all aspects related to production, from the orchestra, which became one of the best in Europe, to the singers, with whom he did not always have optimal relationships. In 1733, he had a notorious clash with one of the most famous castrati of the time, Senesino, who founded, with the support of a good portion of the aristocracy, the Opera of the Nobility, determined to rival the German composer. Two Italian opera companies were too much for a city where this genre had seriously declined during the previous decade, hence the considerable losses they both accumulated during consecutive seasons. In 1737, Senesino’s opera closed permanently. Handel, exhausted by excessive work and the constant upsets, became seriously ill.

Ennio Morricone – The Mission (1986) [2003 Remaster] SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

Ennio Morricone – The Mission (1986) [2003 Remaster]

Ennio Morricone’s Academy Award-nominated score captures the conflict between 18th-century Jesuit missionaries trying to convert the native Indians, and the slavers who want to destroy them. In keeping with the serious subject matter and epic scope of Roland Joffé’s film, the score is by turns grave, lyrical, and tense. Ever inventive, Morricone mixes liturgical chorales, native drumming, and Spanish-influenced guitars, often in the very same track, to capture the drama of the culture clash. His trademark lyricism also comes through, notably in the beautiful themes for “Gabriel’s Oboe” and “The Mission.” Not as over-the-top as his well-known spaghetti Western scores, The Mission shows Morricone at his dramatic best.

Released to celebrate Hawkins’ 40th birthday, this six-movement quasi-orchestral work is an extensive expansion and revision of a piece which originated with a commission from conductor and composer Aaron Holloway-Nahum for the Riot Ensemble, to feature Hawkins and saxophone icon Evan Parker – with whom Hawkins has enjoyed a now more than decade-long musical association – as soloists. The new incarnation of the work features the original forces, augmented by additional acoustic improvisers and the electronic wizardry of Matthew Wright.

Béla Bartók’s monumental Mikrokosmos, containing 153 mainly short “progressive” piano pieces composed between 1932 and 1939, is both a very special piano method and a collection of wonderfully original performance pieces (the series actually contains almost the complete piano music by Bartók from the 1930s). Finally, it is also a detailed introduction to different aspects of his compositional style. With Mikro-kosmos, Bartók, who was generally reluctant to teach composition, created a veritable method of composition. A series of short piano pieces for the 1913 Piano Method jointly authored by Bartók and Sándor Reschofsky and published by Rózsa- völgyi in Budapest is the most immediate precursor of Bartók’s magnum opus, the six-volume Mikrokosmos. In 1913, the composer’s basic endeavor was to help produce a true modern piano school, in which all performance pieces and some easy exercises made up Bartók’s contribution. The 48 little pieces by Bartók included five-finger exercises, easy contrapuntal pieces, occasional essays in different styles as well as a range of character pieces.
